3 Overseas Information Overseas Market Information Ethiopia Power Development Project The Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy (MoWIE) plans to conduct a study for an off-grid investment which allows the private sector to involve in the production and sale of electricity. The study that is being conducted by the German Firm, GmbH Co. & KG is intended to allow both local and foreign companies to invest in renewable energy provision such as solar home systems and institutional solar systems, which are being supplied by the Government. The major goal of the study is to decentralize the country s energy centers and liberalize it. Ethiopia is said to have the capacity of 45,000 MW of hydrpower, 1000 MW of Geothermal energy and 10,000 MW of wind and solar energy. The Egyptian company Asec Engineering and Management concluded plant management agreement with Ethiopia s National Cement Share Company. Asec, which is a subsidiary of Egypt s Qalaa Holdings, signed a one year contract with the possibility of renewing it for five years term. According to the deal, Asec will provide full technical assistance to National Cement with regard to operation and maintenance of the cement plant. The Egyptian company is expected to utilize its knowhow and expertise to help National Cement boost production volumes, out production costs and improve product quality. The National Cement is located in the city of Dire Dawa, 450 kilometers of the capital Addis Ababa, which has a production capacity of one million tons of clinker per annum.
