2 (formerly Engineering Export Promotion Council) Chairman s Pen My dear fellow exporters, The recently announced policy rate cut in the RBI s second Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement delivered no meaningful reduction in the lending rates. With just about 25 basis points cut in the policy interest rates (repo rate) to 7.25 per cent from 7.50 per cent, would not prioritise exports. Infact, merchandise exports should be given the kind of priority they deserve in terms of their contribution to currency stability and employment creation. Rupee stability should be aimed at by increasing exports, rather than looking at reduced imports. We are hopeful that the government and RBI will work together to ensure strong macroeconomic situation in the backdrop of low domestic capacity utilisation, mixed indicators of a recovery, and subdued investment and credit growth. In the coming days the government should also focus on conservative policy support to help keep inflation and inflationary expectations contained over the near term despite the forecast of a poor monsoon and volatility in the external environment. We are expectant that the government would chalk out steps or any dispensation that can help exporters in reducing their cost of transaction and production.
