2 Chairman s Pen My dear fellow exporters, The taking over by Shri Pranab Mukherjee as the Finance Minister of India is indeed a welcome news for the exporting community. Shri Mukherjee has been a strong supporter of exporters and we hope that under his leadership, India will be able to meet the present challenges arising out of the Global Economic Crisis. In my congratulatory message to Shri Pranab Babu, I have suggested a number of proactive steps to support engineering exports. Some of the steps that we have outlined for Shri Pranab Babu s actions are, among others, the need for exemption of Fringe Benefit Tax for exporters, increasing the general rate of depreciation on plant and machinery from the present 15% to 25%, bringing back Section 80 HHC under Income Tax to encourage exports and replacing Service Tax Refund System to an exemption based system. Further, the Council has also placed before the DGFT the various Service Tax Refunds due position of our members, as reported to us by them, so that the DGFT can pursue the matter with the Department of Revenue. This apart, the Council has also given its suggestion for inclusion of couple of engineering tariff lines in the India Chile Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) which is up for discussions as well as to move from a PTA to a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Chile in order to compete with the Chinese exporters. 3 Council s Activities EEPC India Invites Participation for India Pavilion at MIDEST 2009 Paris, France (17-20 November, 2009) MIDEST is the world s largest show exclusively dedicated to Industrial Subcontracting and business conferencing. It is the sourcing platform for International Suppliers of Industrial Subcontracting. It is a show for the forging of partnerships and monitoring technology, serving manufacturers, component suppliers and assemblers who are looking for face-to-face meetings with providers of solutions in metal working, plastics, electronics and industry services. MIDEST 2009 is scheduled to be held from 17th to 20th November, 2009 at Hall No. 6 of the Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Center in Paris, France. This show attracts an average of 2,000 exhibitors every year out of which 39% exhibitors are from countries other than France. Last year the fair was visited by 37,640 visitors, 14% of which came from 54 foreign countries. MIDEST is organized by Reed Exhibitions, the leading trade show organizer in France. The export of engineering goods from India to European countries has reached a level of US$ 8.81 billion in against a value of US$ 6.73 billion during thereby registering a growth of 30.97%. The last three years trend indicates an average growth of 40.40%. This shows that the Indian engineering goods are regularly finding a favourable place in European market. The rates mentioned above are highly subsidized as per MAI Scheme of Government of India.
