1 48th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS ICES 2018 JULY 08-12TH ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO HYATT REGENCY ALBUQUERQUE I C E S E V E N T P R E V I E W R E G I S T R A T I O N N O W O P E N! ICES STEERING COMMITTEE ORGANIZED BY SUPPORTED BY ICES Thermal and Environmental Control Systems Committee (TECS) ICES International Committee (INT) American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Environmental Systems Committee American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Crew Systems Committee American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Life Sciences and Systems Committee

2 Chair s Invitation 2 I offer a heartfelt invitation to the 48th International Conference on Environmental Systems! The ICES Steering Committee is proud to host the premier international conference for all professionals involved in topics related to thermal control systems, humans living and working in extreme environments, human factors, environmental control and life-support systems, and EVA system technology. This event preview provides some preliminary information regarding the rich program we offer, with around 300 expected presentations in 40 technical sessions! There will also be plenty of time for networking with the welcome reception on Sunday, the student poster reception, and coffee breaks throughout the week. The Awards Banquet is held on Wednesday evening followed by the world-famous, not-to-be-missed dessert reception. We ll take advantage of Albuquerque s rich Native American history with a self-guided tour of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center followed by a reception and demonstration of Native American dances. With the technical program, networking opportunities, the city of Albuquerque and the surrounding areas having so much to offer, this will be an ICES to remember! We are especially pleased to announce our distinguished speaker for the Awards Banquet: Lt. Col. Matthew Stanley from the 9th Physiological Support Squadron and Director of Operations for U2s at Beale Air Force Base will share lessons learned relevant to design, test and flight of high altitude systems and his experience with the hardware and operations of the historic and still operational U2. We are excited to bring the International Conference on Environmental Systems community to Albuquerque, New Mexico a low-cost and culturally interesting venue. This high-desert community has a storied history and pre-history. Nineteen indigenous tribes call New Mexico home and the rich vibrant heritage is evident everywhere. Many European-heritage communities trace their lineage back to land grants from the King of Spain, well prior to the founding of the United States. With an up-and-coming entrepreneurial community establishing a foothold, this area has seen a significant rise of critical technology and operations in the aerospace world. Albuquerque was named one of the top 50 destinations in the world by Travel & Leisure and the Hyatt location in downtown Albuquerque is centrally located to take advantage of this historic area. Along with Vice Chair Tim Nalette, who is organizing this year s technical program, I also want to recognize our generous event sponsors who help make the conference an enjoyable, as well as technically enriching, experience. Sincere thanks to UTC Aerospace Systems, Paragon Space Development Corporation, ILC Dover, and Honeywell for their support. On behalf of the ICES Steering Committee we invite you to join us for the 48th ICES in Albuquerque, New Mexico! Posters are ideal for presenting speculative or late-breaking results, or for giving an introduction to interesting, innovative work. Posters are intended to provide students and ICES participants with the ability to connect with one another and discuss the work presented. Each poster will be judged based on technical rigor, poster format, and the student s ability to convey the poster content to the judges through an oral presentation. University/college students are invited to submit abstracts on their proposed poster by Monday, May 1, 2018 in accordance with the procedures described below. The student s abstract and poster should be relevant to ICES; that is, they should follow the same theme of the general conference: focusing on humans living and working in hostile environments with applications inside or outside of terrestrial or outer space habitats or vehicles. Entries must include an abstract, poster title, author name(s), mailing and addresses of each author, work phone and cell numbers, and university or college affiliation. The first author and the presenting author of the poster must be students. Abstracts will not be accepted if the authors have an accepted manuscript on the same topic for the 2018 ICES conference. The text of the abstract shall be no greater than 350 words and double spaced. Submittals shall be in MS Word or pdf formats. Adherence to this format is required or the abstract will be rejected. Poster abstracts shall be ed as an attachment to Matthias Holzwarth: matthias.holzwarth@ariane.group by Tuesday, May 1, Authors will be notified of poster presentation acceptance NO LATER THAN Tuesday, May 15, Each poster entry will receive 1(one) complimentary ticket to Wednesday night s banquet. 11 11 A panel discussion led by Dan Barta, hosting a group of world experts in cross-cutting topics to include surface operations, planetary protection and in situ resource utilization. Successful Mars exploration depends on the effective integration of multiple complex systems. This panel is a golden opportunity to catch up to the state-of-the-art in themes that impact, or are impacted by, design choices that ICES participants make in their everyday. Planned participants to include: o o o o Rob Manning (JPL - MSL Chief Engineer) Steve Hoffman (NASA JSC Mission Designer) Kim Binsted (UHawaii PI for HI-SEAS) John Rummel (McGill Univ former Planetary Protection Officer) NASA s Hubble Space Telescope took this close-up of the red planet Mars when it was just 34,648,840 miles (55,760,220 km) away. This color image was assembled from a series of exposures taken between 6:20 p.m. and 7:12 p.m. EDT Aug. 26 with Hubble s Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2. The picture was taken just 11 hours before the planet made its closest approach to Earth in 60,000 years. NASA, ESA, and The Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA)
