This year s ICES offers a diverse and interesting technical program with over 200 paper presentations in 40 sessions providing comprehensive coverage of subjects related to thermal and environmental control. With a great lineup of sessions and two outstanding speakers, ICES provides an excellent platform to network and exchange fruitful ideas with your colleagues. Join us for hosted receptions on Sunday and Monday evenings, spend time talking to students as they present their research in the Poster Competition, and enjoy the Awards Banquet on Wednesday evening followed by the world-famous dessert reception. Also, there is a Wednesday afternoon tour of the Boeing 737 advanced manufacturing facility in nearby Renton. The venue for this leading-edge technical conference is quite appropriate, as the Seattle area is known for game-changing innovations in aviation, supercomputers, coffee, Internet retailing, music, and the arts. Attractions include the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, the Boeing Museum of Flight, and the Olympic Sculpture Garden. The Pacific Northwest landscape features Mt. Rainier, Snoqualmie Falls, Puget Sound, and lakes where you can fish, sail, whale-watch, and kayak. The ICES conference is managed and organized by the ICES Steering Committee, with administrative and technical support from Texas Tech University led by Cindy Smith. The steering committee is composed of representatives of our sponsoring societies, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society of Chemical Engineers, and the ICES International Committee. The Steering Committee would like to thank the many people who are responsible for making this conference happen. 4 Networking Activities and Special Events UTC Welcome Reception A welcome reception, sponsored by UTC Aerospace Systems, will be held on Sunday 12 July 2015, hrs, at the Hilton Bellevue in the SkyView Ballroom. Take this opportunity to refresh old contacts and meet new participants the night before the conference begins. A ticket for the reception is required and is included in the conference registration fee where indicated. Additional tickets for guests may be purchased upon registration or on site. Opening Plenary Session The event will open on Monday, 13 July 2015, hrs with a plenary session featuring welcome remarks by the conference chair and a keynote speech. Networking Reception and Student Poster Competition A networking happy hour reception and student poster competition will be held Monday, 13 July 2015, at the Hilton Bellevue in the SkyView Ballroom. All attendees are welcome to come and see the work presented by the students participating in this year s poster competition. The ICES student poster competition is targeted to stimulate the participation of students in the event, and it provides an informal and interactive forum for students to present their work. Posters are ideal for presenting speculative or late-breaking results, or for giving an introduction to innovative work. The poster competition reception will provide ICES students and professionals an opportunity to connect with one another and discuss the work presented. Each poster will be officially judged prior to the reception and prizes will be awarded at the conference banquet. Reception & Awards Banquet The conference reception and banquet will be held Wednesday, 15 July 2015, beginning at 1830 hrs at the Hilton Bellevue in the Grand Ballroom. The reception will be followed by dinner, and then the awards presentation and a keynote speech. A ticket for the reception and banquet is required, and is included in the conference registration fee where indicated. Additional tickets for guests may be purchased upon registration or on site. Paragon Dessert Reception Immediately following the banquet, there will be a dessert reception sponsored by Paragon Space Development Corporation. This is a favorite event for participants and all banquet attendees are welcome to attend! Specialty Tour TOUR THE BOEING 737 RENTON PRODUCTION SITE! The 737 is the best-selling jetliner in commercial aviation history with more than 12,000 sold! There are approximately 24, flights per day, meaning that nearly a third of all commercial flights are on 737s, a testament to their reliability, efficiency and popularity. The production line for the 737 is an impressive display of Boeing s production capabilities and the most powerful production tool in the world to identify and eliminate waste. Hosting the highest rate in the company at 42 aircraft per month, the 737 line has capitalized on efficiency and effectiveness. They will be starting the 737 MAX line parallel to the existing Next Generation 737 line in There are no public tours of this facility, so a special THANK YOU to our friends at Boeing for this exclusive private tour set up especially for ICES attendees. Tour Guidelines The use of electronic devices is restricted while walking in operations and transportation areas. No cameras phones, video recorders or cameras permitted. STUDENT POSTER COMPETITION The ICES student poster competition is a program targeted to stimulate the participation of students and provide an excellent forum for students to present their work in an informal and interactive setting. Posters are ideal for presenting speculative or late-breaking results, or for giving an introduction to interesting, innovative work. Posters are intended to provide students and ICES participants with the ability to connect with one another and discuss the work presented. Each poster will be judged on both the format of the poster and the student s ability to convey the poster content to the judges. University/college students are invited to submit abstracts on their proposed poster by 1 June 2015 per the abstract submittal procedures described below. The student s abstract and poster should be pertinent to ICES; that is, they should follow the same theme of the general conference, focusing on humans living and working in hostile environments with applications inside or outside of terrestrial or outer space habitats or vehicles. Abstracts of approximately 300 words must include poster title, author name(s), mailing and addresses, phone and fax numbers, and university or college. The first author and the presenting author of the poster must be students. Abstracts must not be more than one page in length and must be doublespaced. Adherence to this format is required. Abstracts that do not adhere to this format will be rejected. Poster abstracts should be ed as an attachment to Amy Ross by 1 June Authors will be notified of poster presentation acceptance by 10 June Each participating student will receive a ticket to Wednesday night s banquet. 8 GENERAL Information CONFERENCE OVERVIEW The 45 th International Conference on Environmental Systems (ICES) will cover all topics related to humans living and working in hostile environments with applications inside or outside of terrestrial or outer space habitats or vehicles, including aerospace human factors; environmental control and life-support system technology; environmental monitoring and controls; planetary protection; EVA system technology; life sciences; planetary habitats and systems; and thermal control systems technology for both manned and unmanned vehicles. The conference is open to participants from any nation, from academic, government, or industry organizations. There will be four days of technical presentations, with approximately 50 sessions. The conference is organized by the ICES steering committee and Texas Tech University, and supported by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the ICES International Committee (INT). TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATIONS Hotel Information ICES has made arrangements for a block of rooms at the Hilton Bellevue located just outside of Seattle: th Avenue SE, Hilton Bellevue Bellevue, WA, Please note there is NOT a separate block for government employees. The prevailing U.S. government per diem rate at the time of the conference is greater than the negotiated conference rate. To make a reservation, contact the hotel directly by dialing (425) refer to the 45th International Conference on Environmental Systems (ICES). Reservations can also be booked online. Rooms at the conference rate will be held until 11 June 2015 while availability lasts. After this date, any unused rooms will be released to the general public. The hotel has a 24 hour cancellation policy, so you are encouraged to book your hotel room EARLY, and you are able to cancel without penalty up to 24 hours in advance of your arrival.
