They will receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time! With the help and support of their families, they have been preparing for this sacrament since March. Now they are ready to join us at the Table of the Lord. We invite all gathered to celebrate with these young people. They inspire, enrich, and bless us with their presence. Witnessing their excitement reminds us of the wonderful gift we have in the Body and Blood of Jesus. Let us thank God for the faith of our children which in turn nourishes our own faith. May they always remember the joy of this day and continue to grow in the love and friendship of Jesus, the Bread of Life. 4 Page Four St. Charles Borromeo Church Rochester, New York Father Ted s Catechism for Seniors... by Rev. Edwin Metzger fmetzger@dor.org Installment #25: get accurate information about indulgences... Q. I have read number 1471: What is an indulgence? three times now, and it doesn't seem to give me much practical help in my daily Catholic life. Some pious friends of mine and the devotional magazines they show me give me more to chew on. What do you get out of the Church's teaching about indulgences? A. I share your puzzlement. The Church's teaching about indulgences seems to be added to the clearer teaching about forgiveness in documents of Vatican Council II. As a senior priest I lived through that time with great interest and hope. It seemed to me that the documents of Vatican II eliminated indulgences from the teaching on the Sacrament of Penance, which was more centered on love and forgiveness than punishment. After the Council ended, Pope Paul VI issued a document "Indulgentiarum doctrina" which restored the teaching about indulgences. This may be a help to some, but I admit, not to me. Some 'pious friends and magazines' seem to exaggerate the place of indulgences in our lives. Ask me more questions, and I'll try to answer. Q. Give me a quote from the CATECHISM that helps you. A. 1473: The Christian "should strive by works of mercy and charity, as well as by the various practices of penance to put off completely the "old man (person)" and put on the "new person" (Ephesians 4: 22,24). To be continued. Suggestion: talk over the ideas of 'eternal and temporal punishment' and the forgiveness of sins with a small group that includes a variety of ages. And come worship with the community every weekend. LIGHTHOUSE CDS Check out the Lighthouse Catholic Media kiosks at the back of church for CDs, books, booklets, and pamphlets. As we have just passed Divine Mercy Sunday, check out the materials related to that. One of the CDs is The Second Greatest Story Ever Told. It is a talk by Fr. Michael Gaitley, a priest of the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception and the director of the Association of Marian Helpers, a spiritual benefit society with more than one million members. Fr. Gaitley talks about Divine Mercy, the role of Blessed John Paul II in Divine Mercy, and the crucial role that Marian consecration can play in your life. This is definitely not a dry speech!
