2 2 Geraldine Hudson February 17 Jean Day February 20 Dale Bough February 24 Anna Schrock March 9 Virginia Kienly March 14 Art Studio Update This month the studio will focus on water-based projects in celebration of April Showers! We have a variety of watercolor DVDs and books that can be checked. Come by the display cases outside Meraki Studio to learn more about watercolor techniques, or better yet, pick up a brush and see what kind of beauty you can create! Art With a Punch Ushio Shinohara is an 80 year old Japanese artist. What makes Shinohara s art so unique is his signature boxing paintings. He dips his boxing gloves in paint and punches the canvas in a performance that results in beautiful works of art now on display in many museums, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. If you search the internet for Shinohara, you can watch videos of his artistic performances. You will witness the joy and enthusiasm in Shinohara as he works, and that of the crowds who gather to watch. Rachel Witt, Art Programming Coordinator, discovered his videos and was inspired to recreate that feeling with Westminster s Rock Steady Boxers. She shared, There is apparent joy when you watch him paint with boxing gloves. Rachel enlisted the help of Chloe Hough, Rock Steady Boxing Coach and Wellness Center Coordinator. Boxers from each of the class levels were invited to participate in the program properly named Art with a Punch. Just as Shinohara dipped his gloves in paint, these boxers also dipped boxing gloves into their choice of paint colors. Each boxer stepped up to the canvas to throw a variety of punches leaving behind unique and beautiful paint splatters. Chloe noted, We try to get together as a group outside of class as often as we can. With an opportunity to create a piece of really cool, original art work like this, it gave our boxers the opportunity to participate in an activity they never thought they would do. Rachel put the finishing touches on the painting and it now hangs proudly on the wall leading to the group exercise room where the Rock Steady boxers work to combat Parkinson s disease every day. The vibrant colors and paint splatters on display serve as a daily reminder of the energy and exuberance that these boxers bring to their fight each and every day.

3 3 Wellness Earth Day Cookies Celebrate our planet in the sweetest way possible. Simply split a batch of sugar cookie dough (either store-bought or homemade), then use food coloring to dye one half blue and the other green. For each cookie, combine a bit of each colored dough and roll it into a ball, then bake as normal. The finished cookies will resemble miniature Earths. Annual Wellness Fair Westminster Village will host its annual Wellness Fair on Monday, April 23, from 1-4 p.m. in Whitsel Hall. The theme is successful aging. Randall Tippecanoe Chamber Music Society St. E Nursing Students CALC s Tech Team Lynn Nelson Betsy Weber Haan Museum Outing For our monthly outing in March, we attended the Quilt Exhibition at the Haan Museum and learned about quilts from the 1800s and 1900s, as well as the history behind the Haan home. One highlight of the trip was seeing a quilt that JoAnn Lehe had helped to stitch. It was great to see one of our own resident s work at the museum! Franklin Moore took a lot of photos while we toured the Museum. After our tour was complete, he enjoyed sitting in all of the different chairs in the museum, especially one that resembled a throne. Eat for Allergy Relief Do seasonal allergies have you sniffling and sneezing? Certain foods may provide some relief by reducing inflammation and strengthening the immune system. Try broccoli, onions, garlic, pineapple, oranges, watermelon and tomatoes. Meet Your New IT Coordinator I recently graduated from Depauw University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. I am originally from Dillsboro, Indiana. I am here to assist you with all of your IT needs in your homes, as well as on your personal devices. This month I will begin hosting an IT class for residents to learn how to effectively use technology. Topics will vary from month to month, but will be relevant for residents. You may learn about social media, Skype or Facetime, sending s, creating documents, or other various topics that may be useful in your daily life. -Chris Federmann

7 7 Winged Wartime Heroes As part of the U.S. Army Pigeon Service, homing pigeons provided a vital service during World War I and World War II. These specially trained messengers took on lofty missions and saved thousands of lives. Their intelligence, speed and homing ability made carrier pigeons a proven communication tool. In 1917, at the request of Gen. John J. Pershing, a pigeon unit of the Army Signal Corps was created. During World War I, 600 of the birds were used, and over 90 percent of the messages sent by pigeons were received. World War II saw the peak of the winged force, with 56,000 pigeons managed by 150 officers and 3,000 enlisted men. The birds were bred and trained to travel far and fast, flying up to 600 miles at about 40 mph, even under fire, at night and over open water. They couriered messages encased in small tubes on their legs or pouches looped over their backs. They also parachuted with troops. With colorful names such as GI Joe, Cher Ami and Thunderbird, several pigeons became famous for their heroics and were awarded medals for valor. After advances in technology, the Pigeon Service ended in 1957, and the veteran birds found homes in zoos or were sold to the public. Volunteer Corner Volunteer Banquet 2018: Making a World of Difference National Volunteer Week is cause for celebration! This week is designed to salute and say thank you to millions of people around the world that generously give of their time, talent, voice and resources to help strengthen communities. National Volunteer Week was established in 1974, and has grown each year, with thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled throughout the week. Westminster will honor this nationally celebrated week by hosting its annual Volunteer Banquet. The Volunteer Banquet will be held on Tuesday, April 17, at 5 p.m. in Whitsel Hall. The evening of celebration will include dinner guest speaker, Amy Woods, Director of Volunteer Engagement at United Way, and music by Noteworthy Quartet. Thank you to the volunteers of Westminster Village for Making a World of Difference in our community. We can find meaning and reward by serving some higher purpose than ourselves, a shining purpose, the illumination of a thousand points of light. President George H. W. 8 April 2018 Assisted Living Activities Springtime Greetings to All! No April Fools here; we have an exciting month planned in Assisted Living! We will start off the month by welcoming back Jason Wells for a musical performance. It has been some time since we have hosted him, and we are excited to see what new music he brings! We will also enjoy a mix of performers old and new throughout the month, so be sure to come down and have a listen! We will extend our celebration of Easter past April 1, with a lot of fun crafts. They can be displayed throughout the spring, and are sure to bring lots of smiles to all of those who see them.
