Contact Jessica Bonnell, IL Life Enrichment Coordinator, at (765) , Jbonnell@wvwl.org March 2017 The Health Center at Westminster Village has maintained a five-star quality rating as reported on Medicare.gov s Nursing Home Compare for the past six years. Westminster Village is the only five-star rated community in West Lafayette, making our Health Center the top choice for area seniors. The quality rating measures four main areas: health inspection, staffing, quality measures and overall quality. Nursing Home Compare allows consumers to compare information about nursing homes. It contains quality of care information on every Medicare and Medicaid-certified nursing home in the country, including over 15,000 nationwide. The Health Center at Westminster Village specializes in stroke, cardiac, orthopedic and respiratory rehabilitation. Special conveniences include a spacious gym, refreshing spa, and a private entrance for those receiving outpatient rehabilitation. Additionally, residents receive nursing care by highly-skilled professionals trained to provide specialized care for seniors. Finally, once discharged from the Health Center, residents may utilize the new Live Well Center for outpatient therapy and wellness programming. I am truly proud to work for such an outstanding organization and feel lucky that I have the opportunity to serve our fantastic group of area seniors! - Ben Blankenship

2 2 O-O-Oreos! Whether you dunk them in milk or twist them apart, celebrate the birthday of Oreos the world s best-selling cookie on March 6. The cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookies have been enjoyed since Today, Oreos have gone global and adapted its flavors to other countries tastes, like China s green tea ice cream version, or the banana flavor that s sold in Argentina. Myrtle Carter January 25 Dale Compton February 7 Robert Schlatter February 11 Karl Lohmann February 11 Are You Getting Enough Zzzs? March 6-13 is National Sleep Awareness Week, dedicated to highlighting the importance and benefits of getting quality shut-eye each night. So exactly how many hours are you supposed to be sleeping? The National Sleep Foundation conducted a two-year study to determine the hours of sleep needed every night to reach optimum levels of function and success. Results of the study indicate that adults ages should sleep seven to nine hours each night while older adults ages 65 and above should strive for seven to eight hours. Are you hitting your sleep hour target? If not, what is preventing you from doing so? Do you find it hard to fall asleep? You may even find yourself asking If I am so tired, why is it still so hard to get adequate rest? There are a few easy things you can do to improve your sleeping habits. Our world is always on the go, and we are constantly fueled by television, computer screens and cell phones. Screen time right before bed (watching television, surfing the web, catching up on s) makes it difficult for our brains to transition from quick information processing to being ready for sleep. By reducing screen time before bed, studies show individuals fall asleep easier and faster and sleep more soundly. Experts also suggest listening to calming music, reading, turning down the lights in your home and/or deep breathing exercises as additional ways to prepare yourself for rest. Increasing your level of exercise can also help you sleep more soundly! A recent study has shown that by getting 150 minutes of vigorous to intense exercise every week you can improve your sleeping quality by up to 65%. In addition, the individuals in the study found they were less lethargic during the day, had more energy and did not feel groggy upon waking. If you find yourself struggling to stay awake, add some exercise to your routine. Take a swim, join a class or use the cardio equipment in the wellness center. Schedule an appointment with a trainer if you aren t sure how to get started. Not only is it good for your heart and lungs, it will help you sleep better and more soundly than ever.

3 3 Suit Up! We offer a variety of fitness classes at the Live Well Fitness and Rehab Center. One of the most popular is our Aquasize class. Aquasize water aerobics is a comprehensive fitness class that targets cardiovascular improvements as well as muscle strengthening and endurance. It is a fun, upbeat class done to music and taught by our Wellness Coordinator, Chloe. It is offered every Monday and Thursday at 11 am. We also offer Gentle Aqua, a class for those who want a softer pace. Gentle Aqua focuses on stretching and flexibility and is a great class to ease you back into swimming and exercise, in general. If a structured fitness class is not your style, water walking (walking against a light current) and open swim are available Monday-Friday, 7 am to 7 pm and Saturday and Sunday, 9 am to 5 pm. If you have any questions about classes or what to expect for your first aquatic class, feel free to ask anyone in the wellness center. News From the Art Studios! The ceramics, drawing, fused glass and textile programs remain popular as well as some new offerings such as precious metal clay. They were wonderful and a huge hit! It s hard to believe it was only their second public performance. This Little Guy Wants You to Join Us for BINGO on March 24th! A Little More About Hibiki... Hibiki is a Japanese word meaning resonance. The word may be used for a variety of reasons: when artwork speaks to us, when we hear beautiful music or impressive phrases during a conversation, or when something touches our heart. Hibiki, the Japanese choir, has 13 members, including a 97-year-old woman, Kazuko. Leader, Kaori Johnson, grew up singing in a choir group in Japan. The group enjoys singing songs from different countries in both Japanese and English. Hibiki started practicing in October of Five of the members are permanent U.S. residents, while the rest of the members live here temporarily and will eventually return to Japan for their husbands jobs. The group shared that performing in public is a new challenge for them, but they think that singing is their way to communicate with locals and to build new friendships. They hope to show their appreciation for this community and to contribute something to this society they live in through their love for music and song.

8 March 2017 Assisted Living Activities Simple Sewing: Sock Snowmen. From left: Guthrie Carr, Karly DeAnda, and Carl Click Happy Spring! Spring is upon us, and with warm weather comes a new opportunity for us: we will be planting a garden in the Assisted Living Activity Room Courtyard this year! We all may have different ideas about what will be best, but we all agree that knockout roses should be included. The daffodil, hyacinth, and tulip bulbs we started in early winter have begun to grow. March will be a busy month for us. We have music from Ron Potts, Stan the Banjo Man, and Dave Laskey. We will also be meeting with Rachel in the Adtollo Studio to learn new art techniques with enamel and metal clay. We have a Tennis Ball Toss tournament planned, as well as our monthly Volleyball tournament. Have a great month! Health Center Happenings Rosemary Blakesley and Helen Byers are introduced to Pablo the Patagonian Cavy. Hello from the Health Center. Last month we enjoyed hot chocolate socials and celebrated February birthdays. We got in shape by stretching and exercising with scarves. We celebrated Mardi Gras with decorations, food, and fun. We are excited for the month of March. We will have a showcase each Friday with refreshments and an array of musical talents in the Courtyard activity room. We invite you to join us for creature comforts in the Courtyard Health Center. Columbian Park Zoo brings animals for everyone to see, touch and learn about. We have musician Dave Laskey coming on March 9. We also have entertainer Kenny Holcomb coming to sing and play music for us on March 31. Also, each Friday, we have fresh popped popcorn in the Courtyard. We will have kids in the village on March 23, which is a time that preschool children visit and do projects in the Courtyard activity room. We welcome you to join us in the Health Center this month for entertainment, music and more.
