Contact Jessica Bonnell, IL Life Enrichment Coordinator, at (765) , Jbonnell@wvwl.org September 2016 Each year as September approaches, it makes many of us think of cooler temperatures and the trees turning beautiful shades of red and yellow. The season is about to change and harvest is just around the corner. When I think of September, I think of something a little different - ACTIVE AGING WEEK! When I began my career as a personal trainer, I didn t realize what the active aging population was capable of, but it didn t take me long to realize that the residents of Westminster Village are some of the most interesting, adventurous and daring individuals whom I will ever have the pleasure of knowing. Active Aging Week is one of my favorite weeks at the Village - and rightfully so. We won a trophy the first year, set a Guinness World Record the second year and took exhilarating hot air balloon rides last year. This year is sure to be as exciting. We will go beyond the norm to show people what it really means to be part of our vibrant, progressive community. - Jordan Morrow

2 2 Happy Autumn! Hand-Washing Tip With cold and flu season underway, it s more important than ever to wash your hands to fight germs. While many of us were taught to always use soap and warm water, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that when it comes to killing bacteria, the temperature of the water doesn t matter the amount of time spent scrubbing does. Using cold water will save energy as well as prevent the skin on your hands from becoming cracked and dry. Welc me New Residents Marcella Hudgens Dean & Lucille Knudsen Wes Love Brenda McClure Margaret Mihalko Richard & Edna Shelby The Pool Is Open Arguably one of the greatest benefits of aquatic exercise is that it is one of the most effective and safest exercise modalities, and therefore appropriate for all fitness levels. The LIVE WELL natatorium is officially open for use and the staff is ready to help you reach your fitness goals! The natatorium boasts both a lap pool as well as a warm water therapy pool. Both pools are equipped with stairs, but more impressively, there is a true elevator in which residents can be safely lowered in and raised out of the pools. The lap pool is unique because the depth of the pool increases from side-to-side rather than end-to-end. This is a specific design feature that allows for easier visual and audible interaction during group exercise instruction. The lap pool ranges in depth from 3 6 to 4'6". Programming in the lap pool consists of water walking, lap swim, open swim, kids swim, personal training, and aqua fitness classes. The lap pool is kept between 85 and 87 degrees at all times. The warm water therapy pool is kept warmer - 89 to 91 degrees. The lazy river part of the pool features jets that create a current which can be controlled in intensity and direction. This feature is great for water walking, but also helps our therapy staff and the work they do with those recovering from orthopedic surgeries. The other half of the therapy pool has benches for one-on-one manipulation therapy, as well as special tile laid into the floor of the pool for footwork and balance exercises. The Kids Open Swim times are available for resident and employee families, and have already been a huge success. The schedule will change based on resident feedback, so please let us know the days and times that work best for your family! The natatorium is open from 7 am - 7 pm Mon. through Fri. and 9 am - 5 pm on Sat./Sun. The natatorium is always staffed with at least one Wellness Coach who is certified in CPR/AED and First Aid through the American Red Cross. Visit the front desk of the wellness center for a programming schedule and see Chloe Hough, Wellness Center Coordinator, if you have any questions.

Even the non-snake lovers enjoyed seeing and learning about these creatures! Sally Gustafson and Evelyn Windle completed their RAD training. The class was offered by Officer Janet Winslow of the West Lafayette Police Department. Thelma Hoyt, our first resident to try out the new pool, arrived at 7 am on the first day it opened and she was not disappointed! Bunny Boardman & Martha Ward served as beautiful hostesses at an evening program. Both are part of the hosting group, which is open to all. It is a great way to meet fellow residents. Sweet September... Welcome Autumn There is going to be so much to do in September! We start out the month with Melissa Gallant, a harpist from Indianapolis, who has been entertaining for more than 30 years. Jennifer Williams will be back the evening of Sept. 7 to present Realities of Life. Suzanne and Jim Hale will present Ballot Box Ballads, a program of presidential campaign songs. With Purdue students back on campus, we will host International Conversations during the evening in hopes that more students will be able to join us. The Carl Hines Duo, a lively dance band, will be here to get everyone up and moving! Known for their polished and professional look and style, the Purduettes will be back with us this month, too! Don t forget to join us for our next Newcomers Tea to meet all of your new neighbors! These are just our regular monthly events. Stay tuned for more info on everything happening during Active Aging Week! We are all going to need a nap come October!

7 7 IU School of Medicine Tour On August 2nd, we went to the IU School of Medicine that is housed on the Purdue Campus. The school s Outreach & Communications Specialist, Jayne Rayman, gave us a personal tour of the school at Lyles-Porter Hall. We were able to see the facility, including some things that the public doesn t usually see. We were able to get a close-up look at the simulated patient that is used by students. They are able to diagnose the patient through the symptoms he presents. We also got to enter the cadaver lab, which was very interesting! Delores Wilkes, Eleanor Riggs, Kay Atkinson, and Marian Oberholtzer assist in the care of Ivan. He is the simulated patient used by medical students. Eleanor found her husband, Wendell Riggs, on the donors wall of appreciation at the Lyles-Porter Hall. This is the building that houses the IU School of Medicine on Purdue s campus. It was wonderful for Eleanor and the rest of the group to see during the tour. Volunteer Corner Resident volunteer Bill McVay relates Abraham Lincoln s adage, All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother, to his own upbringing. Bill was born and raised in Carroll County. His father passed away when he was 4½ leaving him to be raised by his mother. He credits his mother s philosophy of we were put on this earth to help each other for his work ethic and convictions of faith, family, and helping those in need. Bill has lived at Westminster for 11 years. He says that the years have been highlighted by the kind and helpful staff and his love for his fellow residents. It is his love of people and his mother s influence that keeps him volunteering helping those in need. He actively participates in Food Finders, Lafayette Urban Ministry and is on the Farm House Fraternity Board and Scholarship Committee. At Westminster he serves on the Hosting Group, and the Food Finders, Backpack and Soap Project. Thank you, Bill, for all you do! Hello from Assisted Living! August brought our new Activity Room one step closer to completion soon the construction walls will be down! In the meantime, we have been having fun playing Bingo, a presentation on Feast of the Hunter s Moon, and exploring new things such as Polish Paper Piecing and sgraffito in the new ceramics studio. September brings us musical performances from Charis, Carolyn Moses, and Cliff Martin (all the way from Valparaiso)! The second full week in September is National Assisted Living Week, and we will be celebrating with an intergenerational art project with local children, a dessert party, and so much more! We are also looking forward to Active Aging Week Westminster has so many neat activities in store for us, including a resident and employee talent show! What a month! Health Center Happenings Charlotte Leonard s birthday wish, to take a ride in a red convertible. As seen here with Shelly From Village Care. Hello from the Health Center! In August, we enjoyed celebrating the Olympic events. We participated in flower arranging and art, and enjoyed socializing during the ladies tea. We took a van outing and stopped for ice cream, and sang hymns and gospel music with Victory Christian Center during their visit. As the month of September begins, we are excited for scheduled gatherings and entertainment! Please join us every Friday for donuts and singing, and every other Friday, Jaris will join us to play the piano. If you enjoy polka music, then you will love Stan Garrison. We also have Kenny Holcomb and Nola Nottingham joining us for music and singing. Interested in animals? Or maybe just want to see some cute, cuddly or odd looking creatures? Creature comforts from the Columbian Park Zoo will visit on September 14. Hope to see you there!
