Contact Jane Hahn IL Life Enrichment Coordinator at (765) , jhahn@wvwl.org March 2015 Busy Hands Are Happy Hands I d like to think all of the cold weather is behind us, but I m afraid we may still face some cold days and definitely some spring rain that will keep us indoors. We are excited to introduce a new activity to keep your fingers busy a knit and crochet group! The group meets every other Thursday in Mendelsohn Hall (see calendar for dates). A local expert, Lisa Asbury, has been knitting and crocheting for more than 50 years. She is retired and able to pursue her passion for yarn work. She creates many items as gifts and also for charity through River Knits Fine Yarns in Lafayette. She creates everything from dishcloths, socks, cowls and scarves to Aran stitch afghans and sweaters. Lisa will be here once a month at the group meeting time to answer knit and crochet questions. I hope you will come check it out! Jane Hahn IL Life Enrichment Coordinator

2 2 Activities Gearing Up for Games In anticipation of warmer and sunnier days on the horizon, we will host a variety of fun activities for your enjoyment on March 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. Come to the Village Square for bowling, checkers, shuffleboard and more. We hope to see you there! Chuck Lange Jan. 21 Marjorie Martin Jan. 25 Fall Prevention: Make Your Home Safe Do you remember the first time you fell off a bike and skinned your knee? How about the time when you jumped from the jungle gym only to land wrong and break your arm? Those common childhood injuries probably didn t change your life dramatically; but now, a fall of any kind could be detrimental to your health. As you get older, your bones become more susceptible to fractures. It s imperative to take extra precautions to avoid even the smallest of falls. These simple suggestions can help lower your risk of falling. 1. Find an exercise program that you enjoy. Westminster offers a variety of exercise and fitness classes from ballroom dance to tai chi and yoga that help with balance and strength. 2. Understand the side effects of medications you take. Talk to your pharmacist and doctor if you notice any issues with dizziness. 3. Keep your home at a consistent temperature. If your home gets too cold or hot, it can make you dizzy, which could lead to a fall. 4. Hold handrails when using stairs, which will help with balance. 5. Subscribe to a life alert system. Although this technology won t prevent a fall, if you do fall, you have a button on a chain around your neck that you can push to alert someone for help. There are several other things you can do around your home to lessen your fall risk. Go room-by-room and assess your risk. Bathrooms: Consider safety assist railings in the shower and the bathroom itself. Place non-skid mats or carpets on all surfaces that may get wet. Bedrooms: Keep a night-light on in case you get up during the night. Also, make sure you have a telephone near the bed. Living areas: Tack down all carpets and area rugs firmly to the floor. Falls and accidents seldom happen without cause. Take appropriate precautions to lessen your risk. Contact Kathy Coffman in Wellness if you would like assistance with medication management or additional information about a life alert necklace.

6 6 Thank You! Rev. Gary Sims Dick Jaeger History Committee West Lafayette High School Ensembles West Lafayette Musicale Rev. Greg Eberhard Outback Steakhouse Lynn Lee, Purdue Photo Nadya Dubikovsky Rev. Leland McReynolds The Prannies Gus Nyberg NICHES Land Trust Dotty Asher Sue Brouillette Purdue Fountain Gallery Craig Martin Marc Loudon Caroline Janney Life Enrichment FAQ Q: How do you plan your events? A: The Life Enrichment team plans a variety of events that balance the eight dimensions of wellness: physical, environmental, emotional, health services, social, spiritual, vocational and intellectual. Many of our programs and activities fall under more than one wellness category. Q: What causes a program cancellation? A: We try to give as much notice as possible when an event or class is cancelled; however, there are times when classes get cancelled at the last minute because of unforeseen circumstances. The primary reason for last-minute cancellations is instructor illness. Weather can also cause cancellations during the winter months. Q: How do outings get scheduled? A: Most special outings are a result of resident suggestion and input. Outing details are planned in conjunction with the transportation team. The transportation team s priorities are doctor appointments and resident services, such as grocery shopping; they also work with Life Enrichment to plan fun social outings. We work together to find the best dates and times possible. Q: Why are some events at night and some are during the day? A: We try to offer events at varying times of the day to best fit resident schedules as well as those of our guest speakers. We like to offer events at different times so that all residents have the opportunity to attend something. Q: Where do we sign up for special events and outings? A: You can sign up for outings and special events in the Blue Book, which is located on the desk next to the coffee machine in the Village Square. This book contains sign-ups for grocery shopping, Lunch Bunch, special tours and more! More questions? Stop by the IL Life Enrichment office. Tippecanoe Chamber Music Society will be back on March 4. We resume our Meet the Conductor series with Lafayette Symphony Orchestra s Nick Palmer. Several performance groups will visit, including First United Methodist Church s HIS, Civic Theatre Comedy Readers, One Size Fits All improvisation and Traveler s Dream. A special visit from the Purdue University Afghan Junior Faculty Development Program (AJFDP) is scheduled for March 5. They will present on Afghan culture and experiences at Purdue followed by a short question and answer session.

7 7 Volunteer Corner Life Care Services (LCS) Resident Wellness Champion Program was developed to share noteworthy programs among the various communities they manage. LCS hopes to motivate other communities to offer like programming and to celebrate the accomplishments of outstanding seniors. In February, the article below was chosen to be featured on the LCS website. They, too, think the accomplishments of our own Martha Schrader and the entire Flea Market Committee are noteworthy and inspirational. Every Friday morning several volunteers of the Flea Market Committee open the double doors of a room filled with treasures. These treasures are sold in the weekly Flea Market event, which is open to all residents, staff and the public. Shoppers may find clip-on earrings, an electric typewriter, books, framed paintings, furniture or the perfect set of dishes, among other items. The Flea Market has been a tradition at Westminster Village since The efforts of the Flea Market Committee are led tirelessly by committee chair, Martha Schrader. Martha dedicates more than 20 hours per week to this committee. It is not uncommon to see Martha with a carload of items she has gathered from a newly emptied home. She sorts through homes, brings clothes home to wash them before selling them, organizes items and prices them. FLEA MARKET FRIDAYS 9 a.m. Noon All proceeds benefit Westminster Village Foundation In addition to the Friday morning sales, the Committee held 13 estates sales in the past year. This Committee generated more than $20,000 in The proceeds from their hard work are donated to the Westminster Village Foundation of West Lafayette, Inc., a not-for-profit organization that supports educational, health, recreational and other programs for Westminster s residents, and it provides financial assistance for residents whose resources become insufficient to meet Westminster Village expenses. Martha credits her committee and helpers, made up of Mary Hood, Joyce Lange and Betty Rons and Lee Schrader, for their success. Together, they are the essence of volunteerism and giving selflessly of themselves to benefit others. It is clear to everyone at the Village, though, that it s Martha s commitment and keen leadership that have made the real difference. 8 March 2015 Assisted Living Activities Throughout the past few weeks Assisted Living residents have enjoyed the bird s eye view of the construction for the new Wellness Center and Hybrid Homes. Mick Dalton helped us visualize what several areas of the project will become as the construction moves along. Thank you, Mick! Chinese New Year was Feb. 19. Some of our adventurous residents enjoyed going out for Chinese cuisine in February. Although February is the shortest month, it has been packed full of holidays and special occasions to celebrate and honor, including Super Bowl XLIX, Groundhog Day, National Wear Red Day, Valentine s Day, Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Presidents Day. We hope you have enjoyed this festive winter month. Daylight saving time is just around the corner! Marge Holman visits with Izzy from the Columbian Park Zoo. Health Center Happenings Leah Albregts Celebrates Mardi Gras Greetings and Happy St. Patrick s Day to everyone! We hope you all had a spectacular time closing out the winter months. Here is what we have enjoyed doing in the Health Center. During the month we enjoyed baking cookies (along with a fresh glass of milk) for Westminster staff and residents. We also enjoyed music by talented pianists; many social events like Mardi Gras, Valentine s Day and Chinese New Year; arts and crafts; trivia and Creative Cooking. It s been a busy and active month for all of us. We wish all of you the best as we head into spring and warmer months ahead.
