It is the season of growth and renewal, and conveys a sense of newness. For me, spring is the season that encourages me to want to try new things and explore new ideas. At Westminster Village, we have a lot of ways to explore new interests and hobbies. Whether your preference is volunteering, enjoying musical performances, expanding your knowledge, enjoying an outing, or reflecting during one of our many spiritual opportunities, there is something for everyone at the Village. I am especially excited for the opening of the Live Well Fitness and Rehab Center. Not only will the Center expand our fitness offerings, but the programming in the new art studios will be incredible! During this month, I hope you will explore new opportunities. With the opening of the new Center, who knows, maybe I will be encouraged to become healthier, fit and more active (one can only hope anyway)! - Stacey Johnson

2 2 We were sorry to say goodbye to so many of our wonderful residents during the last month. Margaret Clifton January 19 John Muncie January 22 LaNelle Geddes January 25 Ruth Stauffer January 25 Eugene Leak January 27 William Andrews January 28 Robert Dale February 1 Lotte Hirsch February 4 Helen Crane February 6 Let s Spring Into March! The groundhog saw his shadow in February, which means an early spring! With spring right around the corner, there is a lot of preparation to do. Going outside again is so exciting after being inside almost all winter. Take a minute to take in the beautiful scenery around you and take this opportunity to jump start some healthy habits: Spring Cleaning Time to declutter and get rid of clothes and items you can do without! Donate the items to a good cause or give them to a friend! Make more time for yourself by clearing your schedule. Schedule time to accommodate an activity you enjoy! Get Healthy Outdoors One of the best feelings is being able to walk outside again and not be faced with chilly wind temperatures. Take a stroll around the outside property and soak up some natural and healthy Vitamin D. Always make sure to protect yourself while outdoors. If walking outdoors alone is not your favorite activity, then start or join an outdoor walking group! Eat Healthy Fresh fruits and vegetables will be in season. Swap out some heavy soups for salads. Incorporate fresh fruit and vegetables in your meals to give you natural energy! Try These Spring Exercises Walking is a low impact exercise that allows you to move at a pace that is right for you. It is key to have the right shoes and be sure to stretch afterward. Swimming is low impact and improves endurance and flexibility. Water relieves the stress on bones and joints. Doing laps in the pool works all muscles by stretching and flexing. Cycling is a low impact exercise and easy on the joints! Use the biking trails around the Village. Stretching improves flexibility and range of motion. Stretches in the morning and evening are beneficial to keep your muscles flexible. Gardening activities, like digging in the dirt and pulling weeds, help move your muscles. Use a gardening stool to help avoid injury.

The Irish fairy known as a leprechaun is a familiar figure during St. Patrick s Day (March 17) celebrations. Here are more fun facts about this wee little man: Leprechauns are shoemakers, and legends say they can be detected by the tap-tap-tapping of a tiny cobbler s hammer. If a leprechaun is caught, he will offer three wishes in exchange for his freedom. There are no female leprechauns. Did you know that Leprechauns originally wore red! According to the book Legends and Stories of Ireland published in 1831, leprechauns wore red and a cocked (tri-cornered) hat, shoes and buckles. According to legend, leprechauns dance the Irish jig so much they wear out their shoes. The original name for leprechaun was lobaircin meaning small-bodied fellow. Birthday Fun! On Wednesday, February 3, we held the January and February birthday dinner for those residents with birthdays during either of these two months. Birthday dinners celebrate residents from all areas of Westminster Village and are held every other month to celebrate residents and build fellowship across the Village. With help from resident Dick Jaeger on the piano and Dining Services, the event is always a fantastic time! We would like to wish one more Happy Birthday to those residents who recently attended the birthday dinner; and we can t wait to celebrate your special day with YOU! Cheers to another trip around the sun! Some stories about leprechauns say that they are mischievous while other stories say they are harmless creatures that keep to themselves. Some legends say leprechauns carry one gold coin for every year they have been alive. The Irish isle may have popularized the legend of leprechaun, but they weren t the first to create stories about small people. Holland, for instance, has the Kabouter, a small gnome-like creature that cobbles shoes (better known today as a gnome ). No matter what you believe, St. Patrick s Day is always a fun holiday and we hope the luck of the Irish follows you wherever you may be! Happy St. Patrick s Day!! Residents Harry Hirschl and Sol Gartenhaus at the Birthday Dinner

7 7 Time to Spring Forward! Spring is the time of year when we must spring forward into daylight saving time. Effective April 2, 2006, Indiana became the 48th state to observe daylight saving time. Currently, 80 of Indiana s 92 counties are on eastern time, while the rest of the counties observe central time. Those in the central time zone are located in the Gary and Evansville metro areas of the state. Regardless of which time zone you are in, we will all spring forward together! With the state being rich in agriculture, many farmers have been opposed to daylight saving time. Their days are governed by the sun, not the clock. They argue that when the time springs forward, they are still working into the evening, while most others have been off work for hours. Supporters of daylight saving time agree that Indiana should have a timekeeping system that is in sync with the rest of the nation to preserve business practices. They say that many business hours have been lost due to out-of-state colleagues not being able to keep up with the time differences. No matter what side you agree with, daylight saving time is coming! Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 13 at 2:00 AM and set your clocks forward one hour before you go to bed Saturday night. Happy Spring! Volunteer Corner This month s featured volunteer is Mario Antonetti. Mario and his wife, Marge, moved into a cottage in August 2015 as they awaited completion of their new hybrid home, which they moved into mid-january. Mario said that his career with UARCO left no time for volunteering. Since moving back to the area 23 years ago, he has volunteered with WALA and St. Elizabeth Hospital. And, even though Mario has moved twice in the past six months, he still found time to volunteer. Mario says moving into Westminster was an adjustment; and, he feels that becoming involved has helped. A love of books and wanting to be engaged led to Mario s recent appointment as Chair of the Library Committee. He said he is enjoying his new role and is pleased with the transition thanks to the wonderful guidance he received from Mary Jane Fleener. Mario recommends to new residents, Get active in the community. Get involved. It is good for the soul. Clockwise from left: Stephen Wilson (Music Therapist), Mary Tatlock, Betty Carr, Helen Byers, Phyllis Sexton, Lois Jones, Dortha Osmun, Gladys Hodge, Guthrie Carr, Mary Henkel, Alice Messman, and John Wilms (far right). Hello from Assisted Living! February was a busy month for us! We celebrated Groundhog Day with a fun shadow hunt throughout Assisted Living, Mardi Gras with delicious Polish paczki treats and beaded necklaces, Valentine s Day with handmade cards and decorations, and Leap Day with origami frogs. We enjoyed music from one of our very own playing golden oldies for Piano Hour with Gladys. March is shaping up to be just as much fun as February. We ve got fantastic art projects coming up, along with Irish music for Saint Patrick s Day, music from Jason Wells, a chair volleyball tournament, and all kinds of Easter crafts including traditional Ukrainian painted eggs. The amaryllises we planted in January are blooming out of control spring is almost here! Health Center Happenings Karen Lauterbach visits with sweet puppy Kalim Hello From the Health Center! In February, we celebrated Mardi Gras with decorations, activities and food. We also learned about Chinese New Year and the many traditions that are practiced during this special time of year. Love was in the air as we celebrated Valentine s Day sharing chocolates and flowers with one another. We also had a visit from a furry friend, a puppy named Kalim. As he explored the building, meeting and greeting the residents with a wagging tail and wet nose, he turned all frowns upside down. This month, we will celebrate March birthdays with cake and refreshments. We also will have some new musicians visiting. We will celebrate St. Patrick s Day and Easter with activities and decorations. We will continue to have coffee and donuts every Friday morning. We also bake cookies that are served every other Tuesday. We are very excited about celebrating these special moments together and would love to have you join us!
