Contact Jessica Bonnell, IL Life Enrichment Coordinator, at (765) , Jbonnell@wvwl.org December 2016 This month marks the end of Westminster s fortieth year. The original groundbreaking was held in May of 1975, and the grand opening was on August 1, In the August 2011 newsletter, I wrote about our 35th anniversary and reminisced about all of the physical plant additions and committees that continue still today. The last five years have gone by quickly, but I am still reminded of the same phrase that I quoted then: The more things change, the more they stay the same. While we have grown in buildings and welcomed many new residents, we continue with the same mission. Our goal is to be vibrant and progressive so that Westminster Village is here for another forty years. The mission is to accomplish this goal while providing for our residents, staff, families and community neighbors well-being. As in years past, we remain a family of residents and staff pulling together to make Westminster Village the best it can be and to ensure that it withstands the test of time. As we look to the New Year, there is much for which to be thankful. I look forward to what may be on the horizon as we continue to make Westminster Village history together. Happy Holidays! - Vicki Gregory

2 2 Winter Welcome Special Snowflakes You ve probably heard that no two snowflakes are the same. But how do we know this for sure? Scientists say it s a matter of probability: A fully formed snowflake has about a quintillion molecules (a quintillion is the number 1 followed by 18 zeroes). The chance of these molecules arranging themselves in the exact same way more than once is incredibly slim, especially when affected by constantly changing factors like temperature and humidity. Welc me New Residents Joan Addison Jessica Bailey Lorie Hofman Elaine McFadden Mark & Susan Nesbitt The holiday season is in full swing and December is a month that can challenge our traditional routine, diet and exercise regimen. While this time of year is filled with good food, holiday cheer, family and friends, it is often easy to lose track of our own health and well-being. Here are a few tips to help keep you healthy this season. Wash your hands! Winter is called cold and flu season for a reason. By washing your hands you can reduce the spread of germs and keep yourself and your family healthy. Maintain your activity. Though this time of year is one of the busiest, it is important to stay active. Encourage a friend or family member to go with you whether it be to the gym or simply for a walk. The time spent together will make exercising even more rewarding. Choose your food wisely! During the holidays it is easy to be swayed by delicious meals, cookies, and pies but too many can lead to unwanted pounds. Know that you are going to a party or get-together with family tonight? Eat wisely throughout the day and choose your favorite foods with moderation. You deserve to enjoy the holiday and wise choices will pay off when the season ends. Plan ahead for medications. Is your travel this year going to interfere with your daily routine? Pack medications accordingly and think ahead to how a potential time-zone change may alter your schedule. Traveling for extended periods? Know how to reach your doctor in case you need to speak with him or her. You never know when an emergency can occur and it is best to be prepared ahead of time. Find ways to de-stress. Though the season can be filled with joy, it is easy to become overly stressed. Errands to run? Places to be? Things to cook? Presents to wrap? All of these tasks can lead to feeling overwhelmed which can ultimately affect our health. Be sure you find time for yourself. Taking time to do things that make you happy will help keep holiday stress at bay.

3 3 What s New in the Studios? November was a busy month in the art studios! We continued our community outreach project with Meals on Wheels and contributed our first 100 decorated bags used to deliver meals to the homebound in our community. Join us in the art studios every Tuesday from 11 a.m. - noon to do a little good for someone else. No art experience required. In December, we will continue with regular programs, including drawing, ceramics, textile clinic, simple sewing, fused glass and photography. In addition, look for opportunities to simplify your life a little this holiday season. Stop by the art studios on the weekends to take care of your holiday wrapping and shipping needs. Everything you need to wrap your holiday gifts, including gift wrap and tags will be on hand. We will also have a selection of flat-rate USPS shipping boxes and other packing materials. Save yourself a trip to the post office this year. See you in the studios! Cornhole Tournament At the end of October the Live Well Fitness and Rehab Center hosted a cornhole toss tournament that included our location and two other Westminster locations (Terre Haute and Greenwood Village South). This was our first time hosting this semi-annual tournament, which is held at a different facility each time. The half-day tournament was held in the group fitness room, where players and spectators cheered each other on as players tried to place their corn bag in the hole (worth 3 points) or on the cornhole platform (worth 1 point). If you are interested in future tournaments or want to learn to play, come practice cornhole toss on Mondays and Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. in the group fitness room. We want to bring home a win at the next tournament so come out and practice your corn-tossing skills! The event is open to all residents and their families. It will be held from noon-2:30 pm in Whitsel Hall. The Dickens Carolers will perform for us again in their traditional nineteenth century attire. Santa Claus will also join us for the entire event! We have planned some delicious treats, including a chocolate fountain! There will be a variety of activities for the entire family, such as decorating your own Christmas ornament to take home and a holiday sweater contest. You will receive more information in your mailbox as the date gets closer, but during the busy holiday season, be sure to get this one on your family s calendar! We hope you will be able to join us! Our Very Own Golden Glove! Our resident, Ray Graf, was quite an outstanding boxer! Ray is from Remington and participated in many Golden Gloves tournaments. According to the local newspapers, Ray was Remington s gift to the Golden Gloves. In the articles that we have, the writer stated the following, Graf is one of the hardest punchers in the entire tournament and looks like a very promising amateur prospect. He has won every single fight by a knockout. It was stated that Ray Graf, along with two other boxers, put Remington on the boxing map here in Lafayette. Remington was very proud of their home-grown products. Ray fought in the 147-pound weight class. During a match with a Purdue boxer, the writer stated, The Remington welterweight scored one knockdown and had his man so groggy that the referee stopped the fight before the bell ended the first heat. We love learning new and amazing things about our neighbors, and today we learned: do not mess with Ray!

7 7 Volunteer Corner Volunteer Marian Oberholtzer and her husband, John, moved to the Village in February The Oberholtzers always knew they would live at Westminster Village, just not so soon. She attributes her new hybrid home to their early arrival. Marian says, It is wonderful living at Westminster. There is so much to do and volunteering gives me the opportunity to do something meaningful. Even before Marian was a resident, she began volunteering at Westminster in She was a faithful non-resident volunteer and received the Outstanding Independent Living Volunteer Award in Once settled into her new home she quickly began volunteering. She currently enjoys working in the library and her new role as co-chair for the flea market. Downsizing two homes recently gave her the perfect experience for her new role. She was somewhat surprised at the amount of work that goes into the flea market and admits that extra hands would be helpful at times. Marian, we appreciate your continued commitment to volunteering at the Village. Thank you! A Quick Guide to Charitable Giving. Giving is a huge part of the holiday season, and many people use this time of year to extend their generosity to charities. But it can be tricky to navigate the vast number of nonprofit groups. Follow these tips to determine where your donated dollars should go. Get the facts. No matter how you first hear of a charity, before you give any money, visit its website to gather crucial information, including its exact name, address and telephone number; its mission; and how funds are distributed. Resist pressure. Reputable charities will not rely on heartbreaking stories to pressure you into donating. Instead, they should focus on the specific work their group is doing. Simply say no if you feel suspicious or uncomfortable. And when an organization sends you a free gift, you don t have to return the favor. Don t respond to cold calls. Some charities hire telemarketers to solicit donations. However, a large percentage of these funds may go to the telemarketing company instead of the nonprofit group. If you re interested in the charity, ask for more information to be mailed to you, or visit its website after you hang up. Never send cash. Dropping a few coins in a donation jar is OK, but for larger contributions, send a check or use a credit card. Unlike cash, these methods are traceable, so you can ensure the group received your donation. Please attend our Consumer Protection Program on December 19th.
