My answers probably won t surprise you. I love my wife. I love my kids. I love baseball. And, I love my job! I am lucky enough to lead an extraordinary group of people who spend every day serving an even more extraordinary group. Dining Services just made it through one of the busiest times of the year. We had record turnouts for our Thanksgiving and Christmas Day brunches. We served nearly 300 people at our licensed area Christmas dinner alone. Then we celebrated with a New Year s dinner at which Chef Chad wowed us with lobster tail and steak! Then to top it off, we had staff who gladly stayed past midnight so we could keep the Village Pub open late to celebrate our Boilermakers in their bowl game. I am a lucky guy. I am surrounded by people I love to be around both at home and at work. I recognize that makes me a pretty lucky guy. - Rickey Kerr

2 2 Carl Click December 24 ~ Sue Brown December 30 ~ Karen Lauterbach January 5 ~ Daniel Kendrick January 12 Like to Dance? Try Zumba! Zumba Gold is a dance-fitness class specially designed for the active adult who loves music! Our class meets Fridays at 1:15 pm in the Group Fitness room. Our 30-minute workout is full of oldies, jazz, rock, and Latin-inspired music. Zumba Gold introduces easy-to-follow Zumba choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion and coordination. Come ready to sweat, and prepare to leave empowered and feeling strong! It s cold outside, but the pool is nice and warm. And the latest research suggests that working in the water can be a great tool for fitness training. Here are some of the findings related to aquatic training. Aquatic training improves the ability to perform activities of daily living. Older women who participated in 60-minute shallow-water exercise classes 3 days a week for 12 weeks performed better in land-based activities of daily living, but did not improve balance. (Sanders et al. 2016) Sanders says that for balance improvement, water depth is critical and shallow is better. Water fitness enhances muscular strength and endurance and increases lean body mass. Postmenopausal women who trained with aquatic resistance equipment twice a week for 10 weeks gained strength, reduced fat and increased lean body mass as effectively as women who used weight machines and bands in equivalent land programs. (Colado et al. 2012) Aquatic training improves balance and core stability. Balance and walking improved among older adults who trained in shallow water with resistance equipment. (Katsura et al. 2009) Water properties lead to less muscle soreness and damage. Researchers studied young male subjects in water and land-based exercises and found significantly less increase in creatine kinase an indirect marker of muscle damage from the water workout. They concluded that water-based exercise is an appropriate choice for those who want to limit muscle damage. (Pantoja et al. 2009) Exercise in the pool improves knee and hip osteoarthritis. A review of six randomized controlled studies found moderate-quality evidence that aquatic exercise may have small, short-term but clinically relevant effects on pain, disability, and quality of life in people with knee and hip osteoarthritis. Water fitness lowers blood sugar levels for people with type 2 diabetes. A study of 35 people with type 2 diabetes compared land-based training with aquatic exercise. Participants in both groups experienced a significant reduction in A1C levels a measure of glucose control. (Delevatti et al. 2016)

6 6 ~ Celtic Midwinter Musical Celebration Jim Shella Rev. Lisa Williams Jaden St. Jazz Band Rev. John Williams Civic Theater Comedy Readers Jayne Flynn Rev. Glen Robyne Greg O Haver New Year s Eve A huge thank you to everyone for making our annual New Year s Eve party such a resounding success. We had almost 300 residents and guests in attendance throughout the evening. The food and music were almost as good as the company. A very special thank you goes to our own Ann Hunt. Her wonderful toast was the perfect end to a lovely evening. Chinese New Year begins Feb. 16, and 2018 is the year of man s best friend, the dog. Chinese New Year takes place on a different date each year because it is based on the lunar calendar. Each Chinese zodiac year begins on Chinese New Year s Day. Dog years are believed to be the most unlucky for people born in previous years of the Dog. Woof! Tip for a Brain Block Forgetting why you walked into a room is a common memory lapse. Scientists say the act of walking through a doorway can produce what s called an event boundary, in which your brain has already filed away the thought you made in the previous room and moved on to capture the next thought in the new room you ve entered. Retracing your steps can help jog your memory. Once you ve remembered your mission, say it out loud to reinforce it. Tart Is Smart National Cherry Month in February gives you a good reason to choose cherries specifically tart cherries. This sweetly sour snack contains anthocyanins, compounds that contribute to the fruit s flavor, bright red color, and numerous health benefits. Research shows that tart cherries may lower the risk of heart disease; fight inflammation in arthritis and gout patients; provide relief to sore muscles; and promote better sleep.

7 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Facts Here s a look at the 2018 Winter Olympics to be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The games are scheduled to take place February 9-25, This is the first time South Korea has hosted the Winter Olympics. The 1988 Summer Olympics were held in Seoul, South Korea. The estimated cost of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics is $10 billion, five times less than the 2014 Sochi Olympics, which were estimated to be the costliest in history. Development of high-speed rail lines was key to the country s Olympic bid, as Pyeongchang is rather isolated. The new train lines will allow individuals to travel from Seoul to Pyeongchang in less than an hour. In total, 13 venues, split between Pyeongchang and neighboring Gangneung, will be used during the 17 days of the Games. Six new venues have been built, and others renovated, for the Games. A record 102 medals will be awarded in 15 disciplines. For the first time, viewers in all US time zones will have access to live coverage of the games, instead of a delayed replay. NBC will broadcast over 2,400+ hours of Olympic coverage. Volunteer Corner Westminster s beautiful flower gardens are planted and maintained by Westminster residents. There are several opportunities if you want to help: The Welcome garden, A and B entrance gardens could use a little of your love. We need a few green thumbs to lend a hand with planting this spring, maintaining the beds in the summer, and clearing the plants in the fall. The Health Center has a tower garden. This hydroponics garden lets our residents enjoy green plants year-round and would need your attention every 1.5 to two times a week. The Fairy Garden in the Meraki Art Studio would be perfect for the gardener who might prefer to garden while sitting in a chair inside and would require attention once a week. If you have an interest in any of these opportunities, please contact the Volunteer Office at A special thank you to Pearl Davis, Bob Sanbloom and Elizabeth Shiffman. We are certainly thankful for your green thumbs! 8 February 2018 New furry friends - puppies! L to R: Lorene Wesley, Margaret Hartwig, and Betty Carr. Assisted Living Activities Valentine s Day Greetings! The first month of 2018 has come and gone in a flash! In January, we focused on the beauty of winter and the snow it brought with it in the comfort of LEAF, of course! In February, we will turn our attention to Mardi Gras, Valentine s Day, and the Chinese New Year! This month we will welcome back Ron Potts, Mike Almon, Denise Wilson, Charis, and Keith Austin for musical entertainment. There is nothing quite like music to get us through these first couple cold months of the year! In addition, we will create beautiful Valentine s Day inspired crafts and art, and have our annual Mardi Gras Bingo. We may even have a group of adorable puppies visiting this month, so keep an eye on the schedule! Have a wonderful February!! Health Center Happenings Paper Airplane Contest in the Men s Group hosted by Jordan Morrow; Administrator, with Dick Simon and Bob Anderson Hubert Humphrey once said, The greatest healing therapy is friendship and love. We share a lot of that in the Health Center, which helps us get through these cold winter days. This month we look forward to our Valentine s Day party in the Courtyard Activity Room. Charis will be our entertainment with some love songs and trivia. This month we will join with Assisted Living to host The Time Steppers, a group of tap dancers, on February 2 in the Firefly Room. We will also have visits from Shirley Robertson, Denise Wilson and Ron Potts. Of course we will have our afternoon teas, hot chocolate socials, cookies and milk, and popcorn throughout the month, along with our Columbian Park Zoo visits. Join us for the fun!
