Contact Kelci Fox, IL Life Enrichment October 2018 The beginning of fall brings new challenges to my wife and I this year. My oldest daughter, Sydney, is now a senior in high school. Besides the dances, club meetings and numerous after school activities, we are now actively searching for colleges for her to attend. We have visited Purdue University (of course!), the University of Indianapolis and St. Francis in Fort Wayne so far. Each school offers the art education program she is looking for. As a parent, I hope that she somehow chooses Purdue over all those other schools. All of my siblings and their children attended Purdue for their undergraduate degrees, so I am really hoping for her to continue the tradition. My wife, Danielle, attended St. Joseph College in Rensselaer, Indiana, but the rest of her siblings attended Purdue as well. I will continue to hope and encourage Sydney to be a Boilermaker (which incidentally keeps her a lot closer to mom and dad!). Boiler Up! -Todd Payne
2 2 Take a Nap to Boost Your Brain Sleep is vital to your health and well-being because it gives the body and brain time to repair and recharge itself. Adding a nap to your daily schedule can further boost cognitive function by helping you better retain new information. Scientists say napping gives the brain a chance to move new memories into long-term storage areas, where they can t be easily forgotten, and to make room for more data Welc me New Residents Jim Mailloux & Jim Smith Jean St. Clair How Does Wellness Benefit Your Overall Health? With the crazy heat of the summer behind us, it s nice to think of possible outdoor activities to take advantage of before the snow creeps back up on us, like it tends to do here in Indiana. Walking outside is a great way to get some exercise, and enjoy the beautiful outdoors before it is gone, and we are stuck sitting inside watching snow fall! Along with being able to bask in the sunshine, did you know that walking has a lot of benefits for your overall health? Walking Can Increase Your Muscle Mass While walking, you are using the muscles of your legs and abdomen to keep you steady, and moving. Walking for about 30 minutes a day can maintain strength in your legs and abdominals, as well as add more! Walking Can Increase Your Stability and Balance With its benefits of adding core and leg strength, walking is a great way to improve your balance and stability. Slips and falls can be common due to a lack of hip strength, but walking is a great way to strengthen these muscles in order to help prevent these from occurring too often. Walking Can Improve Your Circulation As we go about our lives, blood circulation problems are possible to occur. A study by the University of Tennessee found that walking can lower your blood pressure, as well as lead to less risk for heart disease. Walking Can Help Improve Your Sleep Due to the physical exertion required when taking walks, studies have shown that walking for one hour a day will help with insomnia, and will help you sleep through the night. So if you notice your sleep patterns aren t quite as great as they could be, make sure you get your steps in! Overall, walking has many benefits for your overall health and making time for a daily walk is a good thing to get started into your routine right away, if you do not do so already! These are just a few of the benefits of walking, and I m sure as you go you will be able to discover even more! So the next time you notice you have a chunk of free time, head outside, and take a nice little stroll. Your body will thank you later!
3 3 What s New in the Studios Have you thought about participating in an art program but don t have room to keep any more stuff you would make? October is the PERFECT month to come and give it a try. Many beautiful works of art made during the fall months are donated to the annual Westminster Bazaar. It is a great time to try something new and contribute to a great cause. We have projects for everyone, from crafts, to simple sewing, and textile to more intensive ceramic, glass and paint mediums. In other news, our ceramics classes have been bursting at the seams! By popular demand, beginning in October, we are increasing our ceramics offerings to three days a week. We will now offer Ceramics classes on Mondays 1-3 pm, Wednesdays 1-3 pm, and Fridays 10 am-12 pm. - Look for details on the October Art Programming Guide or contact Rachel with questions. Outdoor Recreation Center Just in time to enjoy for the fall, we have our new outdoor recreation center on the north side of the LiveWell Fitness and Rehab Center. The purpose of the outdoor center is to promote healthy lifestyles among Westminster residents and employees. The rec center includes a court for pickleball, shuffleboard and basketball, as well as a LifeTrail course, a putting green and some green space for bocce ball and croquet. Come down to the front desk of the LiveWell Fitness and Rehab Center to check out equipment or schedule a time for a game. This is a great opportunity for the residents and employees of Westminster to enjoy some outdoor activities. Breathe in the beautiful autumn air! Every staff member that you see on Fridays that is wearing a sticker has donated $2 to an important cause. Westminster Village donates every $2 that is given on Fridays to the Alzheimer s Association for the Lafayette Walk To End Alzheimer s up until the date of the Walk, which fell on September 29th this year. Starting the first week of October, our donations will start going to United Way for our Casual Fridays. We love being casual for a cause! 3 Things You Need to Know Trendy super foods, such as acai, goji berries and chia seeds, are in the news more often than the less-exotic options, but don t forget about these classic super foods: 1) Peanut butter. This popular nut butter contains healthy fats, protein and minerals such as iron and potassium. It is also inexpensive, easy to find, and convenient for meals and snacking. Eat it with fruit, vegetables or whole-grain crackers. 2) Broccoli. This versatile veggie is high in fiber, vitamin C and folate. Try roasting it with olive oil, salt and pepper. It is also tasty tossed into pasta or as the base for a hearty soup or salad. 3) Barley. This whole grain is a good source of beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber that can lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels and help your body use insulin better.
7 7 Masters of Mystery A diligent detective, several suspects, a sprinkling of clues, and a plot full of twists and turns are the classic elements of a mystery. Put your sleuthing skills to work in the stories of these masters of the whodunit: Edgar Allan Poe. Called the father of the modern detective story, Poe s 1841 tale The Murders in the Rue Morgue set the scene for future fictional detectives. The Edgar Awards, presented annually to top mystery writers, are named after him. Arthur Conan Doyle. The creator of Sherlock Holmes wrote four novels and more than 50 short stories about the famous detective known for his keen skills of observation and deduction. The iconic character has been portrayed in countless film and TV adaptations. Agatha Christie. One of the bestselling writers of all time, Christie penned 66 mystery novels, many of them featuring the memorable sleuths Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. And Then There Were None is considered her masterpiece. Dashiell Hammett. His experience as an investigator with the Pinkerton National Detective Agency inspired Hammett s books, which include The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man. Sue Grafton. Kinsey Millhone is the tough female private eye created by Grafton, whose series of alphabetically titled novels debuted in 1982 with A Is for Alibi. Barbara Neely. Blanche White, an African-American housekeeper and amateur sleuth, is the heroine in Neely s mystery series, beginning with 1992 s award-winning Blanche on the Lam. Volunteer Corner Resident Susan Nesbitt has not let any grass grow under her feet since her retirement this May. While she has immersed herself in projects, she is admirably selective in how she spends her time. She seeks projects she is passionate about, feels she has the skill set to be beneficial, and opportunities that offer her new experiences. Susan has a deep seeded call to volunteerism which she attributes to her mother s example of always helping where she saw a need. Susan learned at an early age how rewarding it is to bring happiness to others and to help people learn a new skill which brings joy to her own life. To her long time list of community involvement in animal rights and the county library, she has added: championing Alzheimer s awareness in her involvement in The Longest Day and the Alzheimer s Walk. She is a Resident Art Mentor, and also volunteers with the Bazaar Committee, Library, and Flea Market. She also facilitates the Soap Project. Kudos to you, Susan! We appreciate both you and your Mother s example!
