(Philippians 2: 9-11.) THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME In the Jewish world of Jesus time one of the ways of speaking about God s action in the world was known as apocalyptic. This type of language is found in the gospels when the evangelists are speaking about the end of time. The imagery is not be taken literally, but is symbolic of the hard times that people might have to endure before the final victory of good over evil. This reading from Luke looks towards the second coming of Christ and Jesus warns his followers not be distracted but to persevere in their faith for no harm will come to them. The preaching of Jesus is never aimed at frightening people into conversion so there is nothing Christian about using the Bible to predict a catastrophic end to the world. It is inevitable, as we reach the end of another liturgical year, that we think about the passage of time and what the future holds. For some it may be full of promise, for others it may appear bleak indeed. However, as Christians our view of the future is not one either of naïve optimism nor of a dark fatalism. We do not know what the coming year holds for each of us but we do know that if we keep Christ at our side then we will not lose heart whatever befalls us. The Biblical view of the future is one steeped in the hope brought by the resurrection of Jesus and his victory over sin and death. - Excerpted from Let the Reader Understand: The Sunday Readings of Year C by Sean Goan Visit us on the web at

PARISH NEWS & ACTIVITIES HAPPY FIFTH BIRTHDAY, HOLY NAME OF JESUS CHURCH! December marks the fifth anniversary for Holy Name of Jesus Parish in our new church. Many years ago, we made the commitment to build a new church that would meet the needs of our growing parish. Building Our Tomorrow. A Legacy of Faith was the motto that unified us to generously support this project. Now ten years later we are approaching the completion of the capital campaign. We are less than $200,000 away from paying off our debt service. What a great accomplishment for our parish, even during a period of national recession! Expect more announcements in the bulletin as plans are made to celebrate the Anniversary. The ambitious parish goal was to pay off the building debt by our fifth anniversary. You can help us meet that goal by the end of the year. Please consider giving a special gift to the capital campaign this holiday season. May she rest in the peace of the Lord! Please pray for the soul of Alice Mae Wilson, who passed away on October 27. The parish community of Holy Name of Jesus extends it deepest sympathies to his family, friends and relatives on their loss. May he rest in the peace of the Lord!
