We use the term faith in many ways. Sometimes we use the term to point to a particular religion. I am a member of the Catholic faith. The people across the street are members of the Lutheran faith. Those down the block are members of the Methodist faith. Sometimes we use the term to refer to the sum teaching of the Church. For example, Our faith teaches us that we have a responsibility to reach out to the poor. Sometimes we use the term to explain a certain belief, such as I cannot understand the Trinity, but I believe in it because it is an article of our faith. Very often, we use the term faith to refer to our trust in another, I have faith that my wife will pick me up at the airport. The most important use of the term faith, though, is our complete trust in God. This is how faith is used in today s reading from Genesis. Abraham was told by God to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Yet, God had also told him that he would be the father of many nations. How could this happen if he were to listen to God and sacrifice his son? Abraham had to have faith that somehow God would fulfill his promise. God had told Abraham to do something that seemed utterly absurd. Yet, Abraham had faith that somehow God would work out his promise and his plan. Abraham completely trusted in God even though everything around him and within him told him differently. If God is for us, who can be against us, St. Paul asks in today s second reading. Life has its challenges, but each challenge can be met and conquered simply by trusting in God to work his wonders in our lives. God will take care of you. And He will take care of me. We trust in Him. We have faith in Him. And when the challenges appear insurmountable, when our faith appears weak, we call out with that man in Mark 9:24. I do believe, Lord. Help those parts of me that don t believe. And we trust in God to form with us, as He did with Abraham, a covenant of faith. - Excerpted from Rev. Msgr. Joseph A. SACRAMENTS Baptisms are held every Sunday after the 12:00 (noon) Mass. Parents are expected to attend an information and instruction session before the Baptism of the child. This session is held the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the school library. Baptismal Registration forms can be found in the Parish Office or on our website. Godparents must be practicing Catholics, age 16 or older, have already received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, and, if married, married in accord with Catholic Church Law. Matrimony: Diocesan Common Policy requires nine to twelve months advance notification of the priest or deacon and attendance at marriage preparation. Please call the Parish Office to make arrangements. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) - Mondays at 7:00 p.m., September through Easter. Please contact the Parish Office for information. Visitation of the Sick: Please notify the Parish Office when a member of the Parish is in the hospital or if someone is unable to attend Mass and wishes to receive Communion. Persons with Celiac Disease: It is necessary for validity that hosts for Mass must be made of wheat. An alternative is to receive the Precious Blood. At any weekend Mass, please let the celebrant know and we will have a chalice prepared for you to receive Holy Communion. 4 Second Sunday of Lent February 25, 2018 The Anniversary of our Diocese - Part I This year we will observe the 150 th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Harrisburg. It is a good time to ask how we got here. In one sense the story always begins with Jesus call of the Apostles and the founding of the Church. But what about the Church in our country? The first parish in what will later become the United States is founded in the city of St. Augustine in Florida. With the arrival of Spanish settlers and accompanying priests, Mass is offered and a church built. Both the city and the church are named for the saint on whose feast day the voyagers first sighted land a little further down the Florida coast. The first Mass will be celebrated with land fall there on September 8, 1565, the birthday of Mary. In the original 13 colonies the story is different. Many early settlements were created by different Protestant groups fleeing persecution in England and Europe. The most familiar were the Pilgrims who settled in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, while seeking religious freedom for themselves they were not often prepared to extend it to others. Catholics were decidedly not welcome in these settlements, and the presence of the Catholic Church was formally forbidden by English law. The exceptions to this were in Maryland, the colony founded by the Calvert family, who were devout Catholics and other place Catholics were welcome was in our own state of Pennsylvania. William Penn and the Quakers who establish our state were very respectful and tolerated other faiths. In 1720 a Jesuit priest was sent to Maryland for Catholics in the central colonies. Eventually he will move to Philadelphia in order to establish missions for Catholic families in Pennsylvania and beyond. He will build what is affectionately called Old St. Josephs near Independence Hall in This is the first public Catholic church in the colonies and remains in operation today. A few years later he will request the assistance of German speaking Jesuits to help with the significant German Catholic population in the state. St. Mary s Church in Lancaster and Sacred Heart Church in Conewago, both started as mission chapels, also date to the mid 1700 s and will serve as bases for the wide ranging missions extending throughout central and western Pennsylvania. SCHOOL & RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS RESCHEDULED FIRST COMMUNION PARENT MEETING will be held on Wednesday, February 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Church. The purpose of this meeting is to give an instruction on the Eucharist to parent/ guardians of students who will be making their First Communion. First Communion will be administered to our Holy Name of Jesus second grade parishioners on Saturday, May 12 at 10:00 a.m. REGISTRATION - Holy Name of Jesus School is accepting new registrations for Kindergarten, Pre-K3, Pre-K4 and new students for the school year. Registrations can be made in the office during the school day. Entrance to the school is through the door with the maroon canopy. New Kindergarten students must be 5 years of age by August 31, A birth certificate, baptismal certificate, and a copy of immunizations are required for Kindergarten registrations.
