1 Holy Name of Jesus January 7, 2018 The Epiphany of the Lord Roman Catholic Church 6150 Allentown Boulevard Harrisburg, PA PASTORAL STAFF Very Rev. Edward J. Quinlan Pastor Reverend Michael G. Metzgar Parochial Vicar Deacon Joseph J. Wrabel Permanent Deacon Deacon Jerome T. Foerster Permanent Deacon MASSES Weekends: Saturday Vigil 5:00 p.m. Sunday 8:00 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 12:00 noon, 6:00 p.m. Weekdays: (Weekday schedule subject to change - please see inside bulletin) Mon-Thu.6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m. Friday..6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m. Saturday 8:30 a.m. CONFESSIONS Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. "God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2: 9-11) THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD The magi told Herod that they were looking for the newborn king to do him homage. Homage. That really must have gotten Herod infuriated. They didn t come to Jerusalem to do Herod homage. This baby king was going to be trouble. But back to the magi. They did find the infant and they did give him homage. They recognized the superior power of this child. Later on in the feudal system, all would be required to do homage to their liege lords. Lesser nobility would recognize their dependence on and responsibility to those who were greater than them. The magi knew that the child was greater than them. They had followed his star. The heavens were pointing to the child. He wasn t their king because others would proclaim him to be some sort of political king. He was someone the heavens had sent. So they gave him homage. And so we give homage to the King of Kings, our Lord. We recognize that he is infinitely greater than any president or prime minister or any other ruler. We recognize that He is our Lord, the one who governs our lives. The magi were wise men. They realized that this child could draw them beyond the limits that the world imposes to that place where his life makes all life complete. That is why they did homage to him. That is why we do homage to the Lord. We do not have to be limited by the physical. We do not have to be condemned to empty lives. Jesus, the spiritual become physical, draws us, the physical, into union with the spiritual. Our lives have meaning and purpose and truth and beauty when they reflect His Life. And so we do Him homage. We place our hands into His hands. We entrust our lives to Him. And we pray to Him to lead us to that place where our hearts long to go, to union with God. - Excerpted from Rev. Msgr. Joseph A. Pellegrino, Diocese of St. Petersburg, FL Visit us on the web at

PARISH NEWS & ACTIVITIES Harrisburg, PA CANNED FOOD DRIVE - Our 2016 Parish Christmas Giveaway, sponsored by the St. Vincent DePaul Society with support from the Knights of Columbus and our Columbian Squire Circle, was another huge success. Over 1000 bags (approx lbs.) of groceries were collected by the Knights during the 4 weeks prior to the distribution on December 16. This parish collection was able to feed over 140 people on our distribution day. Each family was given at least 2 bags of groceries, Christmas presents for each family member and a roaster chicken. We were also able to deliver groceries and gifts to several families who were unable to make it on distribution day. All in all, it was another successful parish mission made possible by the generous parishioners of Holy Name of Jesus Church! The Knights of Columbus would also like to recognize all the parishioners who supported the Knights monthly Canned Food Collection. Our collections for 2016 totaled over 4300 bags of groceries and nearly 32,000 lbs. Our Knights Council is extremely grateful for the generosity of our parish community in making our service project such a rousing success each year! The next canned food collection will take place January 13 & 14. The trailer will be parked between the Church and school in its usual location and we will have the wagon on the west side of the church. Please continue to be generous has we begin a new year of giving! EPHESIANS STUDY - One of the most remarkable things about our Faith is that by God s grace, we have become His adopted sons and daughters. In your day-to -day life, what does it mean to be a son or daughter of God - an heir to His promises and blessings? When you sit in the pews each Sunday, what does it mean to you to be part of His family, the Church? To help you uncover this meaning, Holy Name of Jesus will begin Ephesians: Discover Your Inheritance on Wednesday, January 17 at 6:30 p.m. For more information or to register, contact Ann Marie Segilia at or amsegilia@gmail.com. You will not only discover your unique gifts and calling as a member of Christ s Church; you will also help us to grow in fellowship as a parish as we grow closer to Christ together.
