1 Holy Name of Jesus October 22, 2017 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Roman Catholic Church 6150 Allentown Boulevard Harrisburg, PA PASTORAL STAFF Very Rev. Edward J. Quinlan Pastor Reverend Michael G. Metzgar Parochial Vicar Deacon Joseph J. Wrabel Permanent Deacon Deacon Jerome T. Foerster Permanent Deacon MASSES Weekends: Saturday Vigil 5:00 p.m. Sunday 8:00 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 12:00 noon, 6:00 p.m. Weekdays: (Weekday schedule subject to change - please see inside bulletin) Mon-Thu.6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m. Friday..6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m. Saturday 8:30 a.m. CONFESSIONS Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME They tried to trap Jesus. "Is it lawful to pay tax to the Romans or not?" If he said "yes," they could have declared him a traitor and a Roman sympathizer. He would be a Jew telling people to support their oppressors. If he said "No," then they would have run to the Romans telling them that he was preaching sedition. Jesus settled the question with a simple, but profound answer: "Render to Caesar what is Caesar s and to God what is God's." This passage leads us to consider how we carry out our responsibilities to our country and to our God. Patriotism is a virtue. We support and pray for the men and women in the service. We would not have our country as we know it were it not for them and those who fought and died for it in the past. We are also citizens of the Kingdom of God. Our responsibility to God is infinitely greater than our responsibility to our country. Will we ever be forced to choose between country and God? Hopefully, no, but for us there is no choice. The bottom line is that we are Christians first and forever. As citizens who care deeply for our country, we need to work hard to direct our country's paths to morality. We have a responsibility to support God and country. But we also believe that a priority must be kept: God first, country second. We need to do all in our power to help our country make good, moral laws so that we might always be "one nation under God." There are many, many ways that we can guide our country to being one that serves God in its care for all our citizens. We have a responsibility to fight against laws that destroy life, from womb to tomb. We have a responsibility to change a system that allows the mentally challenged to be homeless. There are many other ways that we need to be active in helping our country make moral choices, support noble ideals. We are reminded to today that we have to be active, courageous and moral citizens of this great nation. That is how we can Render unto Caesar what is Caesar s and unto God what is God s. - Excerpted from Rev. Msgr. Joseph A. Pellegrino, Diocese of St. Petersburg, FL Visit us on the web at

HOLY NAME OF JESUS MUSIC MINISTRIES Whom shall we send and who will go for us? Here I am Lord send me! These words are sung every year during graduation at Westminster Choir College, my Alma Mater! The freshman, sophomore, and junior classes would sing the question: Whom shall we send? And the senior class would sing in reply: Here I am Lord.send me! This was our schools way of sending us forth as Music Educators and Church Musicians. What a profound way of calling us into Ministry! We, as parishioners are called to participate in the Ministries of our Church. Will you be sent forth to be part of Holy Name Music Ministries? In service, Jay Risser Director of Music Ministries Adult Choir - High school ages and up. Rehearsals on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. and singing for 10:15 a.m. Masses on Sundays, Holy Days, and Holidays. Guitar Choir - High school ages and up. Rehearsals on Sundays at 5:00 p.m. and singing for 6:00 p.m. Masses on Sundays. Cantors - Song and liturgical music leaders for Masses. Should be trained singers and participate in the Adult Choir. Youth Choir - Grades 3 to 8. Rehearsals on Thursdays, 3:45-4:30 p.m. and singing for one 10:15 a.m. Mass a month and Holidays. Rehearsals on Thursdays, 6:30-7:15 p.m. and ringing for one Mass a month and Holidays. MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE UNTO THE LORD! HNJ Music Ministry Handbell Campaign The Holy Name of Jesus bell choir has been ringing tone chimes for almost 20 years. The chimes are old, beginning to break, and are losing their pitch. Our goal is to be a true handbell choir. We are looking to purchase a three-octave set of 37 handbells to replace the tone chimes. These bells are much more expensive than chimes, but will last much longer. The expense is more than the choir can handle on its own, so we are asking for your help! Won t you consider making a donation to our campaign, as a memorial to a loved one? There are many levels of giving from which to choose: Gold ($250-$300), Silver ($150-$249), and Bronze ($50-$149). Every donation is important! Together we can reach our goal. For more info, contact Jay Risser at
