(Philippians 2: 9-11) THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT Everybody wants religion to be easy. The Jews wanted signs so they would not have to take steps of faith. Many people today travel throughout the world looking for miracles to be the basis of their faith. The gentiles, the Greek philosophers wanted neat theories on who God is and who Jesus is. Many people today get caught up in rationalizing their way out of faith and morality. We, St. Paul says to the Corinthians, offer something that is not based on rationalization nor on wonders. We preach Christ crucified. (1 Corinthians 1: 23). The crucifix both reminds us of Christ's sacrifice and calls us to join Him in sacrificing ourselves for Him and for His father's kingdom. This is not easy. This is, though, the way of the Lord. The Ten Commandments call us to a way of life that is out of tune with much of society. Honesty, respect for parents, fidelity, respect for property, putting God before all else, giving Him a day a week, are all ways that we are distinct from others. To be distinct, to be separate for the Lord, is what we mean when we say, We are called to be holy. We live these commandments so that ultimately we might not be wrapped up in ourselves. We live these commandments in response to God's preference of us as his chosen people. The Ten Commandments are a covenant made by Moses with God for us, the People of God. They should not be reduced to a minimum. They should be embraced as our way of responding to the covenant to be God s people. - Excerpted from Rev. Msgr. Joseph A. SACRAMENTS Baptisms are held every Sunday after the 12:00 (noon) Mass. Parents are expected to attend an information and instruction session before the Baptism of the child. This session is held the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the school library. Baptismal Registration forms can be found in the Parish Office or on our website. Godparents must be practicing Catholics, age 16 or older, have already received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, and, if married, married in accord with Catholic Church Law. Matrimony: Diocesan Common Policy requires nine to twelve months advance notification of the priest or deacon and attendance at marriage preparation. Please call the Parish Office to make arrangements. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) - Mondays at 7:00 p.m., September through Easter. Please contact the Parish Office for information. Visitation of the Sick: Please notify the Parish Office when a member of the Parish is in the hospital or if someone is unable to attend Mass and wishes to receive Communion. Persons with Celiac Disease: It is necessary for validity that hosts for Mass must be made of wheat. An alternative is to receive the Precious Blood. At any weekend Mass, please let the celebrant know and we will have a chalice prepared for you to receive Holy Communion. 4 Third Sunday of Lent March 4, 2018 The Anniversary of our Diocese - Part II Pastoral care for Catholics settling in the original 13 colonies was first entrusted to Jesuit priests from England and later some from Germany. Parishes and missions were under the supervision of the Diocese of London as these were English colonies. With the end of the Revolutionary War and our official separation from England, as memorialized in the Treaty of Paris in 1783, the time was ripe for the formal foundation of the Church in our new country. Pope Pius VI in 1790 will create the Diocese of Baltimore and appointed Father John Carroll as the first bishop. The diocese included all of the United States at the time. The new diocese was estimated by Bishop Carroll to have 25,000 Catholics and he had 25 priests to serve them. The US population was about 4 million at that time. The new country was open for business and by 1830 began to grow rapidly. Immigration was slow at first then significantly increased in the 1830 s. Many Germans were among those arriving in this wave. By 1845 large numbers of Irish were coming to the US to flee starvation in their native land. With succeeding decades the new arrivals were coming from central and southern Europe as well. This was significantly increasing the Catholic population in the country. By 1808 Pope Pius VII creates Baltimore as an Archdiocese, dividing it to form the dioceses of Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Bardstown (KY). Philadelphia at this time encompasses the whole state of Pennsylvania. Our central Pennsylvania homeland is part of this early diocese, and we are blessed to be able to account as one of our bishops, Saint John Neumann. By way of note, his relics are encased in our main altar. In time, the state will see other dioceses created from the western counties, Pittsburgh (1843) and Erie (1853). On March 3, 1868 Pope Pius IX will direct that the dioceses of Scranton and Harrisburg be created from the territory of Philadelphia. A young priest, assigned as the rector of the minor seminary in Philadelphia, will be appointed as the first Bishop of Harrisburg, Father Jeremiah Shanahan. LENTEN APPEAL The 2018 Bishop s Annual Lenten Appeal is off to a great start. Thank you to all whom have pledged to this year s appeal. SCHOOL & RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS REGISTRATION - Holy Name of Jesus School is accepting new registrations for Kindergarten, Pre-K3, Pre-K4 and new students for the school year. Registrations can be made in the office during the school day. Entrance to the school is through the door with the maroon canopy. New Kindergarten students must be 5 years of age by August 31, A birth certificate, baptismal certificate, and a copy of immunizations are required for Kindergarten registrations. 5 Holy Name of Jesus Parish PARISH NEWS & ACTIVITIES CANNED FOOD DRIVE - The Knights of Columbus would like to thank everyone who contributed to the February Food Drive. We were able to donate over 150 bags of food to the Saint Francis Food Pantry and to the Silence of Mary House in Harrisburg. The next Knights of Columbus Canned Food Drive will take place before and after all Masses the weekend of March 10 & 11. The trailer will be set up between the school and the church entrance. Canned goods can also be placed in our wagon that is situated on the opposite side of the church. Please continue to support our canned food collection as we help the poor and hungry of our community! 6 Third 22nd Sunday of Ordinary Lent Time September March 3, 4, AROUND THE DIOCESE MARRIAGE ANNULMENTS - The Tribunal of the Diocese of Harrisburg will give a presentation concerning marriage, divorce and annulment according to Church teaching. This presentation will be helpful for divorced Catholics, those divorced who wish to marry Catholics and any others who may have a vested interest because of family or friends.
