2 MAY 2018 Hawai i students win big at national media competition Students from 18 Hawai i schools came home with 18 percent, or 30 out of the 163 awards presented at the Student Television Network (STN) Convention, an annual, national student media conference. This year s convention took place March in Nashville, Tennessee. The Hawai i awards include seven first-place trophies, and two wins in STN s Broadcast Excellence Awards, which recognize the top student news programs in the U.S. Maui Waena Intermediate School won the Broadcast Excellence Award for Middle School News Show, while Wai anae High School received the Broadcast Excellence Award for Monthly News Show. All but one of the 18 Hawai i schools were public schools, and all of them participate in PBS Hawai i s HIKI NŌ statewide student news network. At STN, approximately 3,000 middle and high school students from across the U.S. compete in on-site, timerestricted contests in video journalism, television production, filmmaking, music videos, commercials and public service announcements. 3 CEO MESSAGE A Concern About Hawaiians Leaving Hawai i Leslie Wilcox PBS Hawai i President and CEO Community Advisor Dr. Shawn Kana iaupuni, left Community Advisory Chair Karen Knudsen with fellow member Les Murashige Community Advisors pictured, from left: Cheryl Ka uhane Lupenui (Hawai i Island), Les Murashige, Dennis Bunda, Kainoa Horcajo (Maui), Marissa Sandblom (Kaua i) and Dr. Shawn Kana iaupuni. Not pictured: Chuck Boller, Lei Kihoi (Hawai i Island) and Corrina Moefu. Besides our statewide, governing Board of Directors, PBS Hawai i has a Community Advisory Board, with all of Hawai i s counties represented, to give us feedback about programming and other community engagement. At a recent meeting, these Community Advisors shared thoughts about the central question of our April 19 KĀKOU Hawai i s Town Hall: How do we keep Hawai i, Hawai i? One theme of the discussion was concern about Native Hawaiians choosing to move out of state. Dr. Shawn Kana iaupuni of Honolulu says there are research initiatives to measure the current outflow of Native Hawaiians. That s our host culture, she noted. Cheryl Ka uhane Lupenui of North Hawai i Island mentioned that community changes are affecting a school which uses a curriculum based on the Hawaiian culture. This curriculum is deemed less relevant to the needs of new students. Maui s Kainoa Horcajo said that newcomers and visitors are using social media to confer new names on treasured places, resulting in a homogenization of Hawai i. All of the advisors counseled PBS Hawai i staff not to worry if the Town Hall turns dour. They pointed out that change is inevitable, and mindfulness is a positive first step if we want to keep Hawai i, Hawai i. More to come on this subject...aloha nui, 3

4 MAY 2018 COVER STORY Courtesy of Stephanie Berger Host Meredith Vieira By Emilie Howlett Launches Tuesday, May 22, 8:00 pm Our favorite books occupy a special place in our hearts. They help us to exercise our imagination, shift our perspective and open our minds. This summer, PBS puts a spotlight on the power of reading with The Great American Read, hosted by Meredith Vieira. This eight-part PBS series and community engagement campaign is designed to spark a national conversation about reading, and the books that have inspired, moved and shaped us. The project also explores the ways that our favorite books have shaped our collective imagination asking what they have to say about our diverse nation, and how these stories affect us as readers. Launching with a two-hour special on May 22 at 8:00 pm, the series hopes to encourage a multi-generational, multi-platform dialogue about literacy in America. Just prior to the May 22 launch episode, PBS will reveal the list of 100 novels the public will be voting on throughout the summer. The online voting campaign is the first-ever national vote to choose America s Best-Loved Books. The novels on the top 100 list were chosen by the American public in a specially commissioned, demographically representative national survey conducted by market research firm YouGov. Prominent authors and celebrities such as Margaret Atwood, Juno Díaz, Lauren Graham, John Irving, George R.R. Martin, Devon Kennard and more will lend their voices and share their personal stories and connections to their favorite titles. The series returns in the fall with five one-hour specials designed to take a deeper dive into the books on the list, grouped by theme. Leading literary experts will help us understand how these books and themes relate to our history, culture, psychology and the human condition and what they mean to us today. Online voting will begin May 22 at pbs.org/greatamericanread pbshawaii.org 4

5 Among the guests featured on the Great American Read My Favorite Book Local residents pick their great reads Author Margaret Atwood Courtesy of Nutopia/PBS Courtesy of Nutopia/PBS Courtesy of Nutopia/PBS Actress and author Lauren Graham NFL linebacker Devon Kennard We asked several local residents about their favorite books and the impact they have had on their lives. Anne Braun Kula, Maui The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank I first read Anne Frank s diary when I was 11. The fact that her name was Anne, like mine, and that she was just a bit older than I was when she started her diary, added to its appeal and intrigue. I was crushed when her writing ended and I learned that she and her family had been rounded up in a Gestapo raid, separated, and sent off to concentration camps and that she and most of her family ultimately died in the camp. Anne Frank s story ignited in me a lifelong interest; I visited her hiding place in Holland and read many more books about the Holocaust era. What has stuck with me is that even in the midst of living a life where she could have chosen to dwell in misery and self-pity, she maintained a belief in the good of humanity. Eslie Medallon Kalihi, O ahu Oh, the Places You ll Go! by Dr. Seuss Oh, The Places You ll Go! is undeniably one of the most life-changing books I ve ever read, even if I didn t know it at the time. It captures life s journey and its possibilities simply and colorfully, without leaving out the truth that some days will be harder than others and that things won t always go our way. Not only does it touch on success achieved through persistence, but it also brilliantly conveys the message that we, ourselves, have the freedom to embark on any path we choose and shape the adventures of our lives. The genius of Dr. Seuss is that this book is still relevant today, for anyone at any age. Aiden Vincent East Honolulu, O ahu Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J. K. Rowling If I had to pick a favorite book from the Harry Potter series, it would be Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix. I remember reading this series in 2nd grade and as a teenager; I always come back to it. I think that what I really loved about this series overall is how relatable the characters are, despite the fact that they live in such a magical world. This book means so much to me because I can always rely on it to transport me to a whole new world. Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix is my favorite book because it shows Harry start to embrace his leadership and band [together] with his friends. 5
