3 CEO MESSAGE The Power of the Hour: Insights on PBS Hawai i Leslie Wilcox PBS Hawai i President and CEO Pictured, from left: Norm Baker - Aloha United Way Chief Operating Officer; Zi Jun - McKinley High School senior; Connie Mitchell - Institute for Human Services Executive Director; Nani Medeiros - single mother and nonprofit director How many times have you seen or heard something that makes you feel anxious about the future of Hawai i? And how many times have you shaken off the thought, as day-to-day life calls you back, with its challenges and pressures? You know that your passing thoughts will return. Your concerns persist. Perhaps that s one reason why the statewide viewership of Insights on PBS Hawai i has doubled in the last two years. For one hour, on Thursday evenings from 8 to 9 pm, we explore one of the quality-of-life issues that are tugging at all of us. The power of the hour is the different perspectives presented. For example, on March 1, our subject was the Islands tens of thousands of working poor. The Aloha United Way had published a study showing that in , about a third of Hawai i s working households struggled to make ends meet. (An additional 11 percent of Hawai i s households were living in poverty.) I was moved by Insights guest Nani Medeiros, matter-of-fact and thoughtful, as she spoke of being on the high end of the working-poor spectrum. The single mother of a young daughter runs a small nonprofit organization. Born and raised in Hawai i and of part-hawaiian ancestry, Nani never expected to live anywhere else. However, she sees a changing Hawai i that she and her daughter may need to leave. We re getting by just fine...but there s never going to be any huge getting ahead for us, she said, I m almost 100 percent certain I ll never be able to buy my own home. Saving for a [down payment] is completely out of grasp. Last year, she said, her rent increased by $300 a month: That s huge. High school senior Zi Jun said that his immigrant parents live with the stress of debt, even though they work hard to support the family. For all they do to keep the family fed, clothed and housed, they derive precious little time to spend with Zi and his sister. I see my parents coming home every night, and they re not happy, he said. Aloha United Way s Chief Operating Officer Norm Baker and Connie Mitchell, who leads the Institute for Human Services, pointed out that there s help available for homeless people who will accept it, but our society is missing a preventative piece to keep the working poor from falling into homelessness due to an illness or accident. A short-term subsidy could stabilize a highly vulnerable household and prevent society from incurring higher costs. During Insights one hour of live television and live streaming, viewers gain reliable information, and they get an idea of what it s like to live in someone else s skin. Different perspectives can yield understanding. We believe a common understanding builds respect which, in turn, can generate trust and positive action. Insights is currently the second most-watched locally produced program on PBS Hawai i (after Nā Mele: Traditions in Hawaiian Song). According to market research, Insights draws men and women viewers in equal numbers and attracts viewers evenly from every household income level from $35,000 to $150,000. Aloha nui, 3

4 APRIL 2018 COVER STORY KĀKOU Hawai i s Town Hall LIVE Thursday, April 19, 8:00 pm Live stream will also be available: pbshawaii.org, PBS Hawai i s Facebook page Kuha o Zane East Hawai i Island The Global Squeeze: How Do We Keep Hawai i Hawai i? Pashyn Santos Windward O ahu Pono Shim Honolulu Rebecca Meyer Honolulu 11th Grader By Emily Bodfish Language is an extraordinary thing conveying between people the banality of folding laundry and the transcendence of true love alike. Sometimes, the perfect word eludes us. We coin phrases like aha moments and when two people click. But sometimes we find a word that hits at the core of an important idea, an integral part of a culture and community. Bring to mind the moment when you decide to come to the table, to speak honestly and listen earnestly. When we recognize that we are all in this together, and become engaged in a common goal, that is kākou. PBS Hawai i has invited 40 people from across the state, with a diverse range of ages and backgrounds, to join us in the studio for the second installment of our periodic program, KĀKOU: Hawai i s Town Hall, on Thursday, April 19 at 8:00 pm. We ll ask our guests to speak, not to us, but with each other, and with you. With new intimate seating arrangements for our in-studio guests and and social media allowing viewers at home to engage in real time we aim to foster pbshawaii.org 4

5 a respectful, frank discussion. The topic at hand for this episode: The Global Squeeze: How Do We Keep Hawai i Hawai i? No matter what, the clock continues to tick, and change is inevitable but is it for better, or for worse, or both? For example, Hawai i s tourism boom has given many small businesses staying power think of the long lines at breakfast and brunch spots across the Islands. But the boom has also brought visitors to our favorite local secret locations. Big-box retailers have made goods more affordable, but have rendered a number of small businesses unable to compete. This is not a conversation about pro-this, or anti-that. This is a discussion about the finer details of life in Hawai i that affect our sense of place. What we want to know from you is: Which changes must we pursue, and which changes rob us of the character and essence of this place we love? Are we letting our values slide, feeling adrift in a sea of inevitability, or are we reading the tide and finding our own way? The effects of change may touch sore spots in our KĀKOU discussion, but There is nothing weak about aloha, as our President and CEO (and KĀKOU moderator) Leslie Wilcox says, and there is nothing defeatist about kākou. Together, we can find the core ideals in our sense of place, and stoke them like a fire for ourselves and for the future. 13 CIVILIZATIONS Premieres Tuesday, April 17, 8:00 pm Civilizations is a new nine-part series that examines human creativity across cultures. The PBS and BBC co-production, narrated by actor Liev Schreiber, tells the story of art from the dawn of human history to the present day. Inspired by Civilisation, Kenneth Clark s acclaimed 1969 series about Western art, this epic new series expands the scope globally to reveal the role art and the creative imagination have played across multiple cultures and civilizations. Throughout the series, Civilizations travels across six continents to explore a wealth of treasures created through the entirety of the human experience. State-of-the-art drone and camera movement technology and macro-photography allow viewers to immerse themselves in new ways. The first two episodes of the series air this month. The series continues on Tuesday evenings in May and June, and concludes in July. How Do We Look? (Tuesday, April 24, 8:00 pm) explores the many functions of the human image in ancient art and the different ways each civilization and era regarded its significance.
