3 CEO MESSAGE He was genuine, all right Leslie Wilcox PBS Hawai i President and CEO I love this line from a Jimmy Buffett song: I got a PBS mind in an MTV world. That describes the mind of the late Mister Rogers, too. In fact, Mister Rogers met a vacationing MTV news producer on a summer stay in Nantucket and asked producer Ben Wagner about his job at the network, which favored short, dramatic edits ( jump cuts ) and quickie soundbites. Rogers listened attentively and told Wagner warmly: I feel so strongly that deep and simple is far more essential than shallow and complex. Wagner, impressed at Rogers gentle truths and authenticity, later produced an award-winning documentary, Mister Rogers & Me. This month, PBS Hawai i presents Mister Rogers: It s You Mister Rogers I Like on Tuesday, March 6 at in trademark sweater 8:00 pm. It s a 50th anniversary celebration of the beloved longtime program that launched in 1968, Mister Rogers Neighborhood. Before Fred Rogers became Mister Rogers, he watched a commercial TV program featuring people smashing pies in each others faces. He concluded there were better things to do with the miracle of broadcast technology. You rarely have time for everything you want in this life, so you need to make choices, he said. And hopefully your choices can come from a deep sense of who you are. One of his choices was to learn how to present a different kind of television. Gaining TV experience as a floor manager on a kids show starring cowboy-actor Gabby Hayes (a one-time sidekick to Roy Rogers), Fred Rogers picked up counsel that he wouldn t forget. He asked what the actor thought of as he looked at the camera, knowing there were a lot of people out there watching. He said, Freddie, I just think of one little Buckaroo, Rogers recalled. And I thought this was superb advice...he evidently thought of one child. Indeed, when Mister Rogers later faced the camera in his own TV neighborhood, many children felt that he was speaking directly to them, one on one. He addressed their unspoken fears about controlling their anger and frustration; a loved one s illness; the possibility of spiraling like water into the bathtub drain... In effect, Fred Rogers turned a mass medium into hundreds of thousands of personal talks. In the television/video industry, we call this uncommon phenomenon breaking the glass. At a national PBS conference that I attended, a speaker asked how many PBS staffers had entered the field because they were inspired by Mister Rogers. Scores of people stood up, many of them in their mid-20s and 30s. As genuine as Fred Rogers was found to be by those who knew him well, his caring manner was parodied mercilessly by late-night comedy shows. Rogers shrugged off the barbs, even appearing on the shows that made fun of him. And he always assured children that the greatest gift you give is your honest self. Mister Rogers Neighborhood welcomed us into its cheerful, positive environs until Fred Rogers died in 2003, at age 74. His observations remain more apt than ever, including the theme that he shared those decades ago with the MTV producer: What our society gives us is shallow and complicated. Life is deep and simple. Aloha nui, 3

4 MARCH 2018 COVER STORY Fred Hemmings Courtesy of the Hemmings Collection By Emilie Howlett Tuesday, March 27, 7:30 pm As a child born and raised in Kaimukī by his Catholic Portuguese mother and English-Irish father, Fred Hemmings was nicknamed Bully Beef for his rough-and-tumble, hardheaded nature. While bucking up against the status quo would become a frequent theme in his life, Hemmings eventually outgrew his childhood nickname, and leaned into other titles, like the father of professional surfing, state legislator, and author. Local Boy: A Memoir, his latest book published last year, is a love letter to Hawai i. In the book, he recounts his adventures in surfing, politics and growing up in the Islands. Hemmings spent some of his childhood navigating the complicated social and racial aspects that continue to be part of the fabric of life in Hawai i. While he came from modest means, Hemmings and his siblings attended Punahou School on financial aid, and initally did not fit in. When I was at Punahou, I was Fred Hemmings the Podagee, but when I got off the Punahou bus in Kaimukī, I was a haole because [people] perceived me as a Punahou haole, he recalls. One place he didn t have to fight to fit in was in the ocean. Hemmings grew up in a surfing family, with Waikīkī as his playground. He reminisces about surfing alongside celebrated waterman Duke Kahanamoku, who Hemmings considers the most beloved citizen of Hawai i and a true man of aloha. Hemmings would go on to make a name for himself as an accomplished waterman. He won world surfing championships in Brazil, Peru, Puerto Rico, and here at home, at the Mākaha International Surfing Championships, four times. He was also a noted canoe paddler, participating pbshawaii.org 4

After many years as a recreational surfer, Hemmings worked to establish a professional surfing industry and organized televised pro-surf competitions like the Triple Crown in 1976 and the Pipeline Masters. Along with surfing icon Randy Rarick, Hemmings also created the first world pro surfing tour. While he aimed to lay a foundation for modern-day pro surfing that was objective and points-based, Hemmings still speaks of surfing with an almost-spiritual reverence. The pages in his book evoke the magic of the Mākaha Beach surf and the thrill of riding monster waves at Waimea Bay. After his long surfing career, Hemmings worked in promotions and marketing, then made the transition to politics. In , he served in the state House of Representatives, and in the Hawai i State Senate from 2000 until 2010, when he retired from elected office. During his time as a Republican State Senator, he worked with Governor Linda Lingle and President George W. Bush to establish the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands National Monument, Papahānaumokuākea, the largest protected area of any kind in the country and the world s largest marine refuge. Hemmings says he s never been satisfied to watch from the sidelines. At 72, he doesn t see the point in mourning that his grandchildren won t likely be able to paddle out to enjoy a surf break all to themselves. Hemmings has seen change firsthand, but his vision for Hawai i s future retains a hint of optimism. It s who I am, he said. I see a better Hawai i. 5

18 MARCH 2018 PARTNER PROFILE Dr. Belinda Aquino Many viewers don t realize that an individual may sponsor PBS Hawai i programming. We re proud to have Dr. Belinda Aquino of Honolulu as one of our individual sponsors. Dr. Aquino sponsors local broadcasts of two Wednesday night programs, Nature and NOVA. Dr. Aquino earned her doctorate at Cornell University and enjoyed a lengthy and distinguished Dr. Belinda Aquino tenure on the faculty of the University of Hawai i at Mānoa. She is credited with founding the university s Center for Philippine Studies and is an internationally recognized authority on contemporary Philippine affairs. PBS Hawai i: Why did you choose a career in higher education? Dr. Aquino: Education is a paramount, even supreme, value in Philippine life. I was fortunate to have parents whose sacrifices allowed me the opportunity to go through college without the burden of working and studying to support my education. My dad wanted me to take up law but I wanted to have a broader liberal arts background. Majoring in literature and branching out into social science in graduate school provided me with that broader framework for studying society not only from books but also from experiences in the outside world. PBS Hawai i: Why do you support PBS Hawai i as an individual sponsor? Dr. Aquino: It is this educational connection that I began to appreciate in the day-to-day programs on PBS Hawai i. PBS Hawai i has a more diverse and varied range of programs dealing with deeper and provocative topics. I discover or re-discover new concepts, plus become exposed to new or different ways of thinking and develop critical ways of studying peoples, societies and natural phenomena. PBS Hawai i contributes immensely to the betterment of not only individual minds but also to public discourse. Personally and professionally, my own life has been enriched, enhanced and informed by the various programs being offered on PBS Hawai i and I am proud to be an individual sponsor of both Nature and Nova. Mahalo a nui loa to Dr. Belinda Aquino for her support of PBS Hawai i. If you or someone you know would like to be a program sponsor, please contact PBS Hawai i s Director of Business Support, Patty Doo, at pdoo@pbshawaii.org or call LOCAL BROADCAST SPONSORS MAHALO FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
