3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Last Year, Pope Francis announced the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy beginning with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Dec. 8, 2015 and concluding with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, Nov. 20, Among other things, the Jubilee Year of Mercy was designed to help us to meditate more profoundly on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy and put them into practice. The Corporal Works of Mercy consist of feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, visiting the sick, visiting the imprisoned and burying the dead. The Spiritual Works of Mercy consist of counseling the doubtful, instructing the ignorant, admonishing sinners, comforting the afflicted, forgiving offenses, bearing wrongs patiently and praying for the living and the dead. At St. Peter s Basilica in Rome, a door was dedicated as the Door of Mercy through which pilgrims could enter to embrace God s mercy and to dedicate themselves to being merciful. In the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist dedicated a door as a Door of Mercy, as well. In addition, one church in each of the ten deaneries of the Archdiocese had been selected to be a Holy Door pilgrimage site. In the Walworth Deanery, our own St. Francis de Sales Church was selected for that purpose. On Sunday, December 13, 2015, we dedicated a Door of Mercy at St. Francis de Sales Church. Throughout this Year of Mercy, pilgrims have passed through our Holy Doors, seeking God s mercy and asking to become merciful people. The closing of the Year of Mercy in Rome and in our Cathedral in Milwaukee will take place on Nov. 20, The closing celebration of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy will take place at St. Francis de Sales Church, Lake Geneva at the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, Nov. 13, Our church was privileged to host the Doors of Mercy, making our church a pilgrimage site throughout this past year. The closing of the Year of Mercy marks the closing of the Holy Doors. God s Blessings, Fr.

4 Annual Financial Report and Budget for St Francis de Sales July 1, June 30, 2016 Summary- Our Annual Report to Parishioners is being presented in the bulletin to share financial information for the year and our budget for The results are presented in summarized tables and graphically in a pie chart format. The results reflect a $72,541 net loss versus $32,727 net loss for the prior year. The majority of the year over year change was attributable to a lower level of income and increased payroll and related costs including higher health care expenses. The year over year operating expense was $17,515 more than the prior year despite continued efforts to contain all costs and work towards a balanced operating budget while still providing ministries and maintaining our Parish. Our budgeted total expense for the operating year reflects an increase in expenses of just over $20,000 or 1.4% as we strive to provide for the ministries we serve and attract and retain the right people necessary to staff them. As a result we are able to project a balanced budget for the fiscal year. We've just completed a successful campaign for Project 2017 and are excited about the coming changes to our parish! Thanks to all who gave so generously to help us double our initial campaign goal. This will enable us to complete church renovations as well as establish a capital fund balance to address future needs of our campus. Our future financial needs for our parish facility are in very good financial condition. Our operating funds are the monies we rely on to finance the day to day expenses of all parish ministries. These results are shown in the table below and in graphical presentations on the next page. As shown below we have ended 2 of the last 3 years with sizable losses for normal parish operations. We hope to address this shortfall by raising the level of commitment that parishioners and visitors have by asking for yearly pledges for giving. It has been many years since we have conducted a giving commitment and feel it is an opportunity for parishioners to pledge their level of yearly support to fund our routine operations and ministries the parish provides. We realize that current economic conditions continue to impact many families in our parish but we ask that you keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we work to keep our parish community vibrant and growing. The Life of St. Francis of Assisi - Francis, go and build up My house, which thou seest, is falling into ruin." To fulfill this command of Our Lord, St Francis of Assisi ( ) began by restoring physical churches and continued by building up the spiritual Church in souls. Francis' humility, purity, and true joy inspired many to conversion and a deeper faith. 8 CATHOLIC FUNERALS Frequently Asked Questions From the Sacramental Guidelines of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee (Continued from last week ) Prayers After Death 8. When should the parish be notified? The parish priest should be notified of a death as soon as possible. He or another parish minister can then meet with the family and pray for the repose of the newly deceased. Gathering in the Presence of the Body 9.When is the gathering to be held? As the family gathers at the funeral home or in the church for the first viewing of the body, it is appropriate to say the ritual prayers. It is also a time of quiet prayer and reflection. The Vigil 10. What is the difference between a Vigil and a visitation? A visitation is simply a gathering of friends who wish to view or be present with the remains of the deceased, console the relatives, reminisce about the past, and share stories of the deceased. A Vigil is the prayer designated in the Ritual and held during a visitation. The Vigil ought not to be held apart from the visitation, preventing the participation of those visiting the family. Should a visitation in church immediately precede a Funeral Mass, the Vigil is not used. 11. Where should a Vigil be held? The Order of Christian Funerals allows for the Vigil to be held in various places. It can be held in the home of the deceased, in a funeral home, in a nursing home, or in the parish church, but not directly preceding the Mass. 12. Are the recitation of the rosary and other wake prayer services permitted? The Vigil is the official prayer designated by the Church for this occasion and is found in the Order of Christian Funerals. It includes prayers for the deceased and recognizes the person s Christian life. The recitation of the rosary and other private devotions are permitted but should be held at a time other than the Vigil and should never take the place of the official Vigil. 13. What opportunities are present to share memories? The Vigil and the visitation are appropriate times for family and friends to share stories and remembrances of the deceased. The Vigil ought to be scheduled at a time when friends and acquaintances can attend. To be continued next week KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS SIGNS The K of Cs will be selling Keep Christ in Christmas yard signs, car magnets and decals at our November and December Breakfasts.
