3 More Than a Spelling Test Leslie Wilcox PBS Hawaii President and CEO Ever try one of those disconcerting exercises like rubbing your belly and patting your head at the same time? That s what it felt like, facing the microphone when I was an eighth-grader competing in Hawaii s statewide spelling bee. I empathize every year with the new crop of district spelling champs, some of whom are still in grade school and must comport themselves in a foreign world of bright studio lights, TV cables and prominent adult judges. A statewide bee is not just a test of spelling; it is a challenge in personal composure as students picture words in their head, rather than write them out. As they spell out loud, they need to speak up and speak clearly and remember where they are at any given time, lest they inadvertently repeat a letter. When they re given a word they ve never heard of, you can practically see their minds rushing to calculate the language origin and translate how that plays into the word make-up. If the students are like my eighth-grade self, they also must deal with distracting random thoughts: Where s my auntie in the audience? Am I sweating? Oh no...is that judge glaring at me? The 2014 aio Hawaii State Spelling Bee will be held in our PBS Hawaii studio at 7:00 pm on Saturday, March 22, and will be televised live, statewide. To this day, despite the alien circumstances, students acquit themselves well. (Above) Finalists Hope Kudo of Kealakehe Intermediate School and Christianne Abella of Konawaena Middle School. Photo: Anna Pacheco. (Left) Suzanne Skjold takes on pronouncing duties at this year s aio Hawaii State Spelling Bee, which airs live, March 22 on PBS Hawaii. Skjold (pronounced shold ) is Executive Director of Hawaii Literacy. One never knows how a bee will go, but if the competition at district levels this year is an indication, this championship contest may be a doozy. For example, take the 54-round, two-speller duel on Hawaii Island. The finalists, Christianne Abella of Konawaena Middle School, and Hope Kudo of Kealakehe Intermediate School, exhausted all of the words on the pronouncer s list so the two were declared co-champions of the island. They ll participate in the state bee with a dozen other young district champs from across the islands. You re invited to see Hawaii s youth face the challenge this month on live television. If I were a betting person, I d lay odds that the competition will be more exciting than last month s lopsided Super Bowl! A hui hou, March 2014 PBS Hawaii 3

4 BEHIND THE SCENES OF INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII by Gary Chun Special to PBS Hawaii In this time of unfiltered banter and bullying on social media, public television offers a welcome respite with civil panel discussions of the issues of the day. That is exemplified locally with the weekly Thursday broadcast of Insights on PBS Hawaii. Co-producers Suzanne Roig and Treena Shapiro prepare their shows weeks in advance on what timely topics will be covered on Insights. Drawing on their years as respected newspaper reporters, if there is any particular issue that needs more immediate coverage such as the recent heated debate over marriage equality at the State Legislature it will be covered on Insights as soon as possible. Compared to national cable news operations with particular political agendas, PBS Hawaii hews to the tried-and-true fair-and-balanced approach. When we put our panels together, we try to find guests with differing views on the week s issue, Treena says. If it s a controversial issue where guests will be taking sides, we make sure the panel is balanced, both for fairness and to make sure that no one feels ganged up on. This page: Floor director Glenn Yamamoto helps with final preparations before Insights goes live. Opposite page, from top: County Mayors Alan Arakawa (Maui), Bernard Carvalho (Kauai), Kirk Caldwell (Honolulu) and Billy Kenoi (Hawaii) sit down with moderator Malia Mattoch for a recent Insights discussion; Insights director Joy Chong- Stannard makes final production adjustments inside the control room. For example, our marriage equality show featured two panelists who supported samesex marriage and two who were opposed, but within those broad guidelines, we also made sure it was balanced along party lines with one Democratic lawmaker and one Republican. On this issue, we wanted to include faith perspectives, so we found a church leader who had testified against the new law and another who had supported it, Treena says. 4 PBS Hawaii March 2014

5 Insights on PBS Hawaii Thursdays 8:00 pm Stylist Debbie Nishmoto with Insights on PBS Hawaii moderator Malia Mattoch Recently, Mayors Alan Arakawa (Maui), Kirk Caldwell (Honolulu), Bernard Carvalho (Kauai) and Billy Kenoi (Hawaii Island) gathered together to get ready for an hour s worth of interesting talk and viewer questions and comments.the mayors were booked two hours before airtime. The producers are going over possible questions and topics to bring up during the show with the evening s moderator, Malia Mattoch, while she s in makeup. With tablets and folders of clippings in hand, Suzanne, Treena and Malia go over all current public concerns each of the mayors are handling in their respective counties. Director Joy Chong-Stannard then takes the producers to the control room down the hall to make sure that the mayors names and titles are correct. In the hallway just outside the control room, volunteers will field viewer call-in questions from a phone bank set on a long table. Volunteers field viewer call-in questions in a hall adjacent to the broadcast studio Malia and the mayors go into the studio 15 minutes before airtime to rehearse the open for Joy and her camera crew, making any last-minute script adjustments on the TelePrompter. The congenial mayors then share a supportive fistbump in the middle of the table, and Insights is live on the air. The producers, director and executive producer Roy Kimura work in sync behind the scenes during the broadcast. Floor director Glenn Yamamoto floats between the studio and the phone bank to give the index cards of questions to Suzanne and Treena first to determine which questions would either help further whatever discussion is happening on air at the time, or bring up new topics. Glenn then takes those cards into the studio to hand them over to Malia while she is off-camera. With lively talk over such topics as GMOs, Oahu s impending rail system, electric grid interconnectivity, homelessness, legalization of marijuana and statewide water rights, it makes for a quick hour. Whatever possible spillover that occurs is saved as bonus after the show video that will be posted on PBSHawaii.org. Overall, it s a good night for everyone concerned, proving once again that Insights on PBS Hawaii makes for a great live news forum and shows what public television can do to serve the islands communities. Join the Discussion There are several ways you can join the live Insights discussions on Thursdays at 8:00 pm: Phone (Oahu) or (Neighbor Islands) insights@pbshawaii.org Twitter Use hashtag #pbsinsights when tweeting your questions or comments for the guests. Livestream and CoverItLive Watch our live stream of the broadcast and participate in the live chat on PBSHawaii.org March 2014 PBS Hawaii 5

They begin by examining a painting that owner Patrick Rice believes is by Edgar Degas. If correct, it could be worth about 500,000. He has recorded more than 70 albums. His fame stretches from Tokyo to Paris. And he was one of the pioneers of the ukulele as a solo instrument. Now Herb Ohta-San Ohta demonstrates his ukulele mastery on an hour-long Na Mele, premiering March 27 at 9:00 pm on PBS Hawaii Presents. Ironically, the world may never have had the opportunity to enjoy Ohta-San s ukulele virtuosity, if it weren t for a condition affecting an important sense for musicians hearing. PBS HAWAII PRESENTS March 27 at 9:00 pm I came out of the military, Ohta-San remembers. My sister was working for Pan American Airways and she told me that there s a job for me. They gave me a written test. I passed that. Then they gave me a physical. I failed that. I couldn t hear high frequency. Unable to re-enlist in the military, Ohta-San met with former St. Louis classmate and Decca Records distributor, Galen Kam. Galen said, You know, Herbert, you play ukulele all your life, Ohta-San recalls. Why don t you make a record? Galen introduced Ohta-San to Don McDiarmid Jr., president of Hula Records at the time. Don was recording the Kamehameha Alumni Glee Club at the Roosevelt High School Auditorium, Ohta-San says. So we barged in and I played for Don. And Don said, Anytime you want to record, I ll do it. That s when Sushi happened. Sushi was Ohta-San s first single, and it shot to number one on the local radio charts. It was 1964, and kids danced to it on national programs like American Bandstand. Like Father, Like Son Herb Ohta and Herb Ohta Jr. Since then, Ohta-San s son, Herb Ohta Jr., has followed his father s path, and became an accomplished ukulele player in his own right. I have a section on my website called Appreciation of History, Herb Jr. says. So get him [Ohta-San], get Roy Sakuma, get Eddie Kamae. They made the ukulele a lead instrument. Kids look at myself or Jake Shimabukuro, or Taimane Gardner, or Brittni Paiva, as the groundbreakers, but we re not. If it wasn't for them, him, Eddie, we wouldn t be doing what we re doing. To think, a hearing condition that prevented Ohta-San from one career opened the door to another a musical career that paved the way for generations of ukulele soloists. 14 PBS Hawaii March 2014

Limited Edition T-Shirt Reflects a Timeless Story When PBS Hawaii began working with local architecture firm Group 70 International on the exterior design of our NEW HOME, we felt that it was important for Hawaii s statewide on-air and online storyteller to build a facility that tells our story in a way that is meaningful and timeless. We arrived at the concept of the Hawaiian kipuka a place where the lava flow has passed around an area with foliage, soil and water intact. We see our NEW HOME as a visual and cultural kipuka a central place to strengthen communities statewide. To symbolize our mission, Group 70 Vice Chair Sheryl Seaman created an original design featuring traditional native Hawaiian plants to symbolize our mission and reflect a physical, cultural and historical sense of place. The design will form a decorative metal screen around the exterior of our facility, deflecting sunlight and heat. The ahupuaa (land division) is also reflected in the motif. The lower level of the design uses kalo to represent the lower valley, while the top portion uses the ulu (breadfruit), ipu (gourd) and kukui (candlenut) to represent the upper valley and mountains. As a supporter, you are a part of the PBS Hawaii story and we d like to share these designs with you. For your gift of $65 or more, we would like to offer you a limited-edition PBS Hawaii t-shirt featuring plant designs that will be a part of our NEW HOME. This year s kalo shirt is one in a planned series of four so be sure to collect them all! Simply fill out and mail in the coupon above to receive this special mahalo gift. March 2014 PBS Hawaii 19
