1 First Friday Newsletter May 5, 2017 Volunteer Services - University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Vinny, the Volunteer Services mascot, participates in the National Volunteer Week Open House Scavenger Hunt. Volunteer News Thank you for joining us at our Open House events as a part of National Volunteer Week! We hope that you enjoyed the scavenger hunt as much as Vinny! We appreciated the opportunity to celebrate YOU and the difference you make at UI Hospitals and Clinics. Also, thank you to everyone who participated in the National Volunteer Week Trivia Hunt! If you are curious, the answers to the trivia hunt questions were: The Rooftop Cafe sold over 20,000 cups of coffee in 2016 The new Children's Library TV channel is ,614 pieces of Hawkeye apparel were sold in Wild Rose Gifts last year

2 The Fourth Floor Salon sold 1,684 products during their annual holiday event last November Over $490,000 was distributed to 49 patient and family programs through the Volunteer Services' Contributions and Donations process last year. Patient & Family Stories From the Burn Treatment Center: "Today I had the best shift ever! A staff member from physical therapy let me follow him around all morning going from patient to patient and teaching me the basics of PT. I learned appropriate ranges for respiratory rates and oxygen levels. I learned some PT lingo like "standing pivot" when patients are going from bed to chair or vice versa. We walked patients around the unit and one even did a dance move in his room! There isn't enough room on this page to say everything we did but if anyone ever has the opportunity to work with this staff member DO IT!! You won't regret it." From the Emergency Department: "I've been helping out patients by talking to them, taking them to the cafeteria or bringing them what they need. It's been a pretty nice shift. I met an elderly man who graduated here in 1964! He told me about how he was a principal for 39 years. Patients can make your day by just simply talking to them, so take the opportunity to meet some new people."

3 From the Cancer Inpatient Unit, 4JPW: "Today was so eventful! In addition to my normal stocking duties, I had great patient interaction. I had the pleasure of assisting a patient that was struggling to eat her lunch. Then, I dropped off equipment to the mail room. A staff member gave me a wonderful surprise for my spring break pictures! After, I discharged a patient. Then, I took a trip to the MICU to deliver pumps. So happy to do what I do in this unit!" Congratulations to Ellen Haman, one of the winners from the Volunteer Services Open House drawing! From the Volunteer Services Office: "Today was so much fun! I tagged a bunch of sock monkeys that a patient made for us, then I got to visit the Children's hospital for the first time. It was amazing! Overall it was a great shift." From the Mother Baby Care Unit: "There were several babies in the nursery today. I held a baby for the last 45 minutes of my shift! He was so cute! He came in the nursery cold, and I was able to warm him up by holding him, so it felt good to know that I helped! I also got to know one of the students. It was such a good day!" From the Palliative Care Unit: "I had the opportunity to visit a very nice patient. I think this was the first patient that I got the opportunity to talk with for more than half an hour. She shared so many things, and at the end of the visit, she said something that made my day better: "thanks for what you are doing". It was a great experience to make someone's day better just by talking for a few minutes.

4 Getting to Know You The Volunteer Services Office team is a large group of individuals, all of whom have a significant role in supporting volunteers, staff, businesses, and patient and family programs. To help make introductions, each month a question will be posed to these full-time staff, hourly staff, and volunteers, as an opportunity for YOU to get to know US better. This month's question is: What is your favorite zoo animal? Jean Reed, Director: 'Red pandas. They remind me of Pomeranians!' Tera Kringle, Volunteer Coordinator: 'I love the wallabies at Blank Park Zoo!' Tom Compton, Administrative Coordinator: 'Penguins!' Elizabeth Nutty, Volunteer Office Support Staff: 'Elephants. They're all wrinkly and cute.' Cindy Forbes, Volunteer Office Receptionist: 'Tigers' Lori Wyland, Volunteer Office Receptionist: 'Giraffes'

In 1983 for the 50th anniversary of the movie King Kong, an inflatable King Kong was attached to the Empire State building. Unfortunately the balloon suffered a tear while being inflated. A few days later the balloon was Friday, May 12 in the Fourth Floor Salon Mother's Day event! Free Mother's Day basket with $25 retail purchase while supplies last. 10% off all polishes.
