Kanikapila in our Back Yard It was a good-time back yard jam session in the PBS Hawaii studio for the premiere of Let s Play Music: Slack Key with Cyril Pahinui and Friends. With hay scattered everywhere and palaka-style tablecloths covering the picnic tables, the musicians played in harmony surrounded by PBS Hawaii family and friends. We would like to extend a special thank you to all who helped make this a success, including Roland Cazimero, Cyril Pahinui, Greg Sardinha, Palani Vaughan, Peter Moon Jr., Alana Burk, Mike Burk and Rhonda Osurman Mahalo! 3 One of Hawaii s Best-Kept Secrets Leslie Wilcox PBS Hawaii President and CEO Call it 443. Or PBS Hawaii KIDS. Or one of the best-kept secrets in Hawaii: a television channel that runs high-quality children s programming around the clock, without commercials. It s for parents who want their young children to be positively occupied learning while having fun. My 4-year-old son Bain loves it, says Makaha mother Ashley Nii. It s part of our routine. After Bain has dinner and a bath, we read a book, play with LEGO or tell stories. Before he goes to bed, we turn it on it s relaxing for him to watch 443. And it s totally safe, she says, I can pop in and out of the room. I don t worry one bit when he s watching PBS. 443 is PBS Hawaii KIDS channel 443 on Oceanic Time Warner Cable. PBS Hawaii KIDS is also available on Hawaiian Telcom 96 and through over-the-air broadcast signals at We don t have a marketing budget to promote PBS Hawaii KIDS, but parents manage to find it. Sure, Bain s cousins watch it too, Ashley says. By evening, our main PBS Hawaii TV channel has switched from children s shows to programming geared for adults. But hundreds of channels away on the digital dial, PBS Hawaii KIDS stays focused on keiki: The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, Curious George, Sid the Science Kid, Wild Kratts, Sesame Street, Super Why!, Daniel Tiger s Neighborhood, The Electric Company and more. We don t expect children would be watching at 2:00 am, of course, says station programmer John Kovacich. The overnight programs are a placeholder for the channel. Ashley Nii with her son, Bain But John says the wee hours serve as a good time for parents to set their DVR to record their children s favorite shows. John, who lives in Honolulu, also has a 4-year-old son in the home, Mani. Like Ashley and her significant other in Makaha, John and his wife allow their child to watch Curious George and other shows on our main channel while having breakfast and getting ready for pre-school. At the very end of the day, the children spend time with our sister cable channel, PBS Hawaii KIDS. For homes that have more than one TV set, you may find parents watching evening adult fare on our main channel or another channel, while the keiki are around the corner happily watching PBS Hawaii KIDS. Programmer John also works to ensure there are choices for children during the day. He has Arthur, aimed at older children up to 8 years old, airing at noon on our main channel. At the same time, over on PBS Hawaii KIDS, he schedules Curious George, designed with 2- to 5-year-olds in mind. Essentially PBS Hawaii offers two options for children during most of the hours between 5:00 am and 5:00 pm, John says. Ashley is relieved that her son never picks up bad language nor is exposed to things inappropriate for his age on PBS Hawaii KIDS. I d like to invite you to check out this dedicated PBS Hawaii KIDS channel. It s not meant to be a secret, and we encourage you to spread the word or the number: 443! A hui hou (until next time), July 2013 PBS Hawaii 3

An Enduring Legacy PBS Hawaii KIDS Fosters Local Business Support There was no avoiding it the time had come. On this day, the normally intrepid four-year-old Gigi Burks would face her biggest fear: going to the doctor s office to get a shot. But she was ready. Daniel Tiger had taught her a trick for staying brave in scary situations. And if he could do it, so could she. Remember what Daniel did, said Jami Burks to her daughter, referencing one of Gigi s favorite PBS KIDS shows, Daniel Tiger,s Neighborhood. Close your eyes and think of something happy. When the nurse entered the room, Gigi closed her eyes and thought of her dad, Ron. And before she knew it, the worst was over. The nurse said Gigi was the best patient she s had all day, said Jami. And all because of what she learned from watching Daniel Tiger s Neighborhood. Jami is the Executive Director of the Makana Aloha Foundation, a Maui-based family foundation whose generosity supports PBS Hawaii s HIKI N Ō statewide student news network. As strong proponents of lifelong learning, the foundation recognizes that PBS Kids programming and local student learning initiatives like HIKI N Ō are vital Jami, Gigi and Ron Burks to ensuring that all The Cudiamat family enjoy learning together of Hawaii s children have access to quality education. According to a recent study, PBS children s programming is the number one reason people cite for choosing to support and watch public television. Over the past year, the number of local businesses and organizations supporting PBS Hawaii s children s programs has tripled, due in large part to philanthropicminded local business owners who understand the value of curriculum-focused programming because they themselves grew up watching Sesame Street, The Electric Company and Mister Rogers Neighborhood. My husband and I both grew up watching the kid s shows on PBS Hawaii, and now my children are growing up watching them, too, said Cheryl Cudiamat, mother of four. Cheryl is the owner of Keiki Care Center of Hawaii, a preschool supporting the local broadcast of The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! We love the nostalgic feeling we get when we watch PBS shows with our kids. Keiki Care s support of The Cat in the Hat also yields significant marketing benefits for the Pearl City, Oahu preschool which Cheryl and her husband, Jeoffrey, founded in Together, the PBS and Dr. Seuss brands are synonymous with education, so we wanted to make sure people knew that we supported it, said Cheryl. I know parents watch it because we watch it. PBS Hawaii is the only 4 PBS Hawaii July 2013

station we feel comfortable letting our kids watch with 100-percent no worries. It is an opportunity to watch television as a family. Approximately 50 percent of parents with kids under six years of age watch PBS KIDS with their children, with 88 percent of adults agreeing that PBS is a trusted, safe place for children to watch television compared to 34 percent for cable TV. There s nothing that happens on PBS Hawaii in the morning that makes me say I m going to have to stop and explain something to my daughters, said Emily Pick. She and her husband, Tom, operate My Gym Children s Fitness Centers in Kailua and Aina Haina. This is a total dork mom thing to say, but I love when Evangeline watches Super Why! and yells out Y or O in the living room. It makes me happy that she s learning letters that way. My Gym, a non-competitive gymnastics-based program that encourages healthy and active living for kids and parents, is a brand-new supporter of PBS Hawaii KIDS programming. We ve been watching PBS Hawaii since I had my first one, so I know that it s something that touches a lot of homes and families. PBS is on whenever I take my daughters to friends houses for playdates, said Emily. It s something I feel confident in not only as a parent but as a business owner because it ties in the same philosophies we teach at My Gym, in terms of being respectful to other people, taking care of ourselves, and our communities. It takes a community pitching in to provide PBS Hawaii s trusted transmedia platform. With the generous support of local businesses, foundations and individuals, PBS Hawaii carries forth public television s enduring legacy of children s programming that educates and entertains. PBS KIDS Mobile Apps Make Learning Fun, Anywhere, Anytime, All the Time By Sara DeWitt Vice President, PBS KIDS Interactive As our media world changes, kids are finding favorite content in new ways: from their parents smartphones while sitting in the car or grocery cart, to laptops at home and school, to the family ipad or tablet. PBS KIDS believes these new platforms give us new opportunities for teaching and learning, so we ve already created apps for shows like Super Why!, Daniel Tiger s Neighborhood, and Dinosaur Train for iphone, ipad, Android, Kindle and Nook. With the PBS KIDS video app you can stream clips or fulllength episodes of the PBS KIDS line-up, as well as check Sara, David and Benjamin TV times so that your family can catch favorite shows on the big screen at home. The new PBS Parents: Play & Learn app strives to give busy parents tips for playing with keiki while on the go, including ideas for engaging activities away from the screen. Organized by location such as a restaurant, grocery store, or riding in a car or bus the app offers suggestions for skill-building games you can play together, such as letter-finding games, sign-reading puzzles or sorting challenges with those sugar packets on the café table. All PBS KIDS apps are regularly researched to make sure they are appropriate and educational for young keiki. In fact, this month on Oahu, a research team is testing the PBS Parents app with young families. You can find all of the PBS KIDS apps at pbskids.org/mobile. Editor s note: Since 2011, Sara DeWitt has been stationed at PBS Hawaii while her husband, Lt. Col. David Henry, was assigned to the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM). This month, Sara, David and their son, Benjamin return to the mainland. Mahalo, Sara, for sharing your insights. A hui hou! July 2013 PBS Hawaii 5

VIEWERForum >>PBSHawaii.org PBS Hawaii s live broadcast, Let s Play Music! Slack Key with Cyril Pahinui and Friends was also available on our website via live streaming. Here is what online viewers had to say: Like us on Facebook! Jacobe Antoni I watched it live here in Bremerton WA...Maika i! Gae Bergquist Trommald Outstanding!!! Nikki Brown Yay PBS Hawaii! I m tuned in from North Carolina. Enjoying this tremendously! Nuuanu This came from a viewer who watched Leslie s interview with transgendered fashion designer Ari Southiphong (Andy South): Tonight s Long Story Short with Ariyaphon Southiphong was among the most moving, honest, courageous conversations I have been privileged to experience. The eyes were damp but the voice was swelling with a deep and powerful sense of Hooray! You were wonderful in being genuine, frank, compassionate as you moved the interview through what easily could have been discomfort, even consternation. I expect Ari came away with a strong sense of mahalo for being so affirmed in her own courage and honesty. Thank you for your cheerful and humanly affirming rigor and aloha. Manahan was born and raised in the Philippines and now calls Kalihi home. Master Takabayashi Goes to Washington Akira Takabayashi, an eighth grader from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, recently returned home from an impressive performance at the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee held in Washington, D.C. After he won the aio Hawaii State Spelling Bee in March, aio and Grove Farm partnered to send Akira and his family on a 10-day trip to compete against 281 spellers from across the world. The competition included spellers from Jamaica, South Korea, China, Canada and many more foreign nations. On May 29, Akira aced the preliminary rounds by spelling gynarchy and oyez correctly. He also passed the vocabulary test by defining calypso (a type of music) and mobiliary (relating to household furniture). On the stage I only had to spell two words, those were easy, Akira said. But on the computer test there were hard words. Unfortunately Akira didn t qualify for the semifinals once computer test results were factored into the total score, but overall it was a remarkable experience that he ll never forget. Congratulations, Akira, for representing Hawaii proudly! 6 PBS Hawaii July 2013

PBS Hawaii Presents The Untold Story: Internment of Japanese Americans in Hawaii Thursday, July 25 8:00 pm T he documentary reveals the little known stories of several detainees held at World War II internment camps located throughout the islands. Produced by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii (JCCH), this film was written and directed by Ryan Kawamoto, a freelance producer for Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox and HIKI NŌ. PBS Hawaii interviewed Kawamoto to learn more about the film and the impact he hoped to achieve. PBS Hawaii: How did you get involved with The Untold Story? Ryan Kawamoto: About three years ago, JCCH hired me to do a short film about the Honouliuli internment camp out in Ewa [Oahu]. After we completed that film, we realized that there s so much information about the other camps that was left out of the short film. No one really directly talks about the thirteen camps [in Hawaii]. PBSH: How did that affect your ability to find people to interview? "This was probably the most fulfilling project I have directed. [It] could have been easily lost and forgotten." Ryan Kawamoto Writer and director, The Untold Story RK: There were very few survivors that I could interview. The two that appear in the film have since passed away. The historical re-enactments in the film came straight from the translated works. A lot of it came from the writings that the Japanese Cultural Center recently translated to English. That became a big basis for filling in part of the story. PBSH: How did performing the re-enactments affect the actors? RK: They all got a really good sense of what it must have felt like. Some of us got really emotional while we were filming those scenes. It really was a powerful experience. PBSH: What do you hope people take away from seeing The Untold Story? RK: The message of this film is not to complain about the injustices, but to remind people that these sorts of things have happened in the past, and they re happening now, so we all need to be vigilant about these civil liberty issues. Unfortunately, you can see echoes of this in our society and our country, like what happened to Muslim Americans after 9/11, gay rights, bullying in schools discriminating against one particular group of people because they re different. In Hawaii, the Japanese American Citizens League is working on the plight of the Micronesian community. This was probably the most fulfilling project I have directed. This is a story that could have been easily lost and forgotten. I m the writer and director, but there are a lot of other people that contributed to make this happen because of the research and preservation efforts that went into it for years and years. 16 PBS Hawaii July 2013
