1 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Founded in 1949 Spring Program Tuesday March 20 Time 10:30 a.m. Chapel Hill Country Club Speaker Bobbie Lubker Modern Family Myths: Why They Persist February 2012 Long-time member, Bobbie Boyd Lubker, will discus Modern Family Myths: Why They Persist at our March 20th meeting. As a speechlanguage pathologist-epidemiologist, she will explore with members the illogical explanations for child communication disorders that persist generation after generation. She will discuss interpretations in the media that keep myths alive. The group will view videotapes to compare beliefs with facts. Dr. Lubker is retired from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she held a joint appointment in the School of Education and Speech and Hearing Sciences, School of Medicine. She served two terms as president of the UNC-CH Retired Faculty Association (RFA) and is now president of the Association of Retirement Organizations in Higher Education, and international organization. She holds a master's degree in speech-language pathology and a PhD in public health epidemiology. Her research interests emphasize the epidemiology of childhood disability, language-learning profiles of chronically ill children, and hospital school administrative models. In 2009 she received the first Outstanding Leadership Award given by the UNC-CH RFA. Bobbie has lectured in the U.S. and abroad on communication disorders and on the confluences of public health and public education. She is also an award winning memoir writer. 2 Greetings to all as we begin 2012 From Our President-Spring Newsletter Before I begin on the exciting programs for this spring, I would like to say a word of thanks to Sandy Turbeville for her leadership in making the Blue Zone a memorable event for all who attended and to Donna Falvo, who chaired yet another delightful Holiday Brunch that we all look forward to each year. Thank you Sandy and Donna!! Our spring programs have an educational theme. The first one is Tuesday, March 20 th at the Chapel Hill Country Club beginning at 10:30AM. We are so pleased to have one of our own members, Bobbie Lubker, presenting the program, Modern Myths about Family: Why Do They Persist? I hope the title will grab your interest enough for you to invite a friend to attend with you. Bobbie and I were colleagues in the School of Education at UNC for many years and I know she is a beloved professor as well as an entertaining speaker. Come and find out for yourself. Our second meeting this spring and the last meeting of the year is the spring luncheon which is a favorite of everyone. Anita Hennis and her committee have planned a very special treat for us. It will be at the Chapel Hill Country Club on Thursday April 26 beginning at 11AM. There are plenty of free parking spaces. Our featured speaker is Dr. June Atkinson, our State Superintendent of Public Instruction, who will give us the current status of our public education in North Carolina. The committee and I sampled the food we will be enjoying so we know it is delicious. This program is always a good one to invite a prospective new member or a close friend who you know would enjoy the fun, food, and fellowship. Laurie Norman, our membership data guru, has informed me that we have 39 new members this year. That is outstanding! However, that is not enough. We need to retain our members, those who have been members for many years as well as our new ones. As a member you can help us do just that. Provide a membership form for someone you would like to join and assist them through the process. That is how we get new members. You can help make our club better by generating new members and helping retain existing ones. Please state if the gift is in honor or memory of an individual. Contributions are tax deductable and will be acknowledged by the University. If a donor s employer matches charitable gifts, the matching gift form should be included with the payment.

3 University Woman s Club Newsletter University Women in Blue October Blue Zone Event A dismal, cold rainy day failed to dampen the spirits of our intrepid group for the Blue Zone Event in October, UNC cheerleaders shepherded the group from the Rams Deck into the elegant Concourse level where Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz enlightened us on the universally acclaimed work he and his research group are doing on sports related concussions. Door prizes included tickets allowing entry to the Blue Zone amenities and football games, and some lovely Tar Heel wearable items. There were goodie bags for everyone. After the tour of the Blue Zone the group had a lovely luncheon at the nearby Carolina Club where they were joined by gentlemen friends and spouses who were given a private tour by Tim Smith, major gift director for the Rams Club. The UNC Cheerleaders received a $200 donation to their scholarship fund in the UWC name from a private donor. We also want to thank Lizzie Stewart, director Tar Heel Hospitality for her part in the success of our fall program. Page 3
