3 ABOUT SHEPHERD S HOPE A faith-based organization of volunteers that exists to provide access to healthcare for the uninsured. Since 1997, Shepherd s Hope has provided free medical services to the uninsured and underinsured in Central Florida by encompassing all faiths and serving all faiths. Today, 21 years later, Shepherd s Hope has evolved to five free-standing health centers, in Orange and Seminole Counties, that cumulatively have provided more than 256,575 free, primary care and specialty care patient visits to uninsured men, women and children across Central Florida. A dedicated group of 2,800 licensed medical and general volunteers, 5 community hospital partners, 100 diagnostic/surgical providers and 23 multi-faith partners worked collaboratively in 2017 to provide 19,575 free patient visits and medical services to the uninsured, creating a beautiful collaboration that has Central Florida s own Shepherd s Hope regarded nationally as an exemplary model of healthcare. Community Impact 1 in 4 Central Floridians, or 448,226, are uninsured (11% of these are children). In 2017, 55.6 % of Shepherd s Hope patients reported they would have gone without any type of care without access to a Shepherd s Hope health center. Cost savings to the community o Uninsured individuals often delay care they need or don t seek care at all due to limited resources. In these times of desparation, they turn to hospital emergency departments. o The average cost of an emergency department visit in Central Florida is $4,600 (Orlando Business Journal 2014); the estimated internal cost for a patient visit at a Shepherd s Hope clinic is $241. o In Shepherd s Hope 2017 patient surveys, 22.3% of patients stated that without the healthcare services provided by Shepherd s Hope, they would have visited an area emergency department for their healthcare needs. This more costly alternative would have cost the Central Florida healthcare system a staggering $19.8 million ($4,600 x 4,306 patients). Shepherd s Hope comparable cost of delivery to these same patients was just $1 million ($241 x 4,306 patients). An Excellent Return on Investment 256,575 free patient visits and medical services have been provided since 1997, with 19,575 provided in 2017 alone. 95 cents of every dollar donated returns directly to patient care and services. Every dollar donated returns $11.48 to Shepherd s Hope due to in-kind donations of time, talents, services and facility locations. $2.4 million of in-kind volunteer services were provided by more than 2,800 volunteers who dedicated 44,000 hours at our five health center locations in $17 million of donated medical services, diagnostics, specialty care and facilities from hospital, faith and community partners. Shepherd s Hope is dependent on individual and corporate philanthropy and grants for its operations.
