6 6 LEAKESVILLE VOICE April 2018 A Letter from the Administrator EASTER GREETINGS! Greetings from the staff here at Leakesville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center! Easter is a good time to enjoy all of your many meaningful blessings: family, friends, Jesus, and, of course, chocolate molded into tasty bunnies. This holiday gives hope for tomorrow, as after the winter comes Spring. We hope that this Easter Sunday will inspire you to new hope, happiness, prosperity, and abundance, all received through God s divine grace. Come visit us this month and participate in some of our activities. We would love for you to join us. Jason Creel, LNHA, MPH, TRS Administrator From the Desk of the Director of Nursing BUILD A NATION OF SAFE, HEALTHY COMMUNITIES For this year s National Public Health Week, the focus is for all people across the United States to be able to live in communities that they feel safe in on a daily basis. For example, in our homes, the presence of radon gas increases the risk of lung cancer. It causes 21,000 deaths annually and is the top cause of lung cancer among those who do not smoke. Also, 40 percent of asthma attacks are caused by triggers such as mold and rodents. These types of attacks are completely preventable. Not only do we need to take precautions inside Wanda Khan, RN Director of Nursing of our homes, but also outside of our homes. More than half of those in the United States live in neighborhoods with ozone pollutions which increases the risk of premature death, heart damage, and respiratory complications. Over 29 million Americans live in low-income neighborhoods that are more than a mile from the nearest supermarket, which makes it difficult to access affordable healthcare and groceries. Although these statistics may seem discouraging, it is important to know the facts to help encourage Americans to take better precautions, and more initiative, in our homes and neighborhoods. Please take the time to find out what you can do to build a safer nation and a healthier community.
