1 November / December 2017 Farewell This will be my last Scoop article as I will be retiring in December. I want to thank everyone for making my years here at the Springdale Community Center such a wonderful time. I have met so many members and have gained so many friends. I have done a lot of different things through the years working at the front desk, working special events, and spending the last five years as the adult senior programmer. Now, I will have time to sit on the other side of the table at the luncheons and play dominoes and maybe a game or two of pickleball. I would also like to thank all the employees I have worked with. I could not have done it without the help of the maintenance crew, front desk, and of course Jay has been my partner in many of these activities, especially Active Aging Week. I thank Charlie who gave me free reign most of the time and jumped in to help when I needed it. I have enjoyed working here and will enjoy coming back as a member. The Giving Tree The Giving Tree will soon be up in the lobby. We will again be partnering with S.O.S. (Springdale Offering Support) to provide gifts for less fortunate families within our community. The tree will be decorated with ornaments listing a gift wish on the back. If you would like to participate, select an ornament, sign it out at the front desk, purchase the item, and return it unwrapped with the ornament attached to the Springdale Community Center by Friday, December 1. We appreciate everyone s generosity. We ask you to only purchase the item listed. If you cannot locate the item, please feel free to exchange the ornament. If you would like to add to your own gift, a gift card from any area store would be greatly appreciated. Volunteers are needed to help wrap the gifts on Tuesday, December 5 10:00 a.m. Please let us know if you can help. If you have any questions, please call Annual Holiday Luncheon Friday, December 1 11:30 a.m. What better way to start the Christmas season than with our annual Holiday Luncheon! We will be celebrating this year at the Snow's Lakeside Tavern on Dry Ridge Road with great food and festive Christmas music. The menu will include a choice of Tequila Lime Chicken, Sirloin Steak, or Snow's famous Fish Log. All entrees include a house salad or hot slaw, one side (baked potato French fries steamed broccoli sweet potato fries mac & cheese or garlic mashed potatoes), soft drinks, iced tea, coffee and dessert. Alcoholic beverages may be purchased individually. The cost for this festive afternoon is $15.00 for members and $17.00 for guests. Reservations must be made with payment by November 24. Stop by the front desk or call with questions. Creating Community Through People, Parks and Programs
2 Words from a Fitness Guru My grandma loved to cook and she was great at it. Her chili recipe won a chili cook-off here. But as she got older cooking became more of a chore than an enjoyment. Cooking might not be the pleasure it once was for you, but you don t want to shortchange yourself on nutrition and a healthy diet. Fortunately, there are plenty of healthy alternatives to spending long hours in the kitchen. If you can t or don t like to cook anymore, consider getting some help with meals from friends and family or by hiring a home health aide who can shop and prepare meals for you. Many people would cherish the opportunity to share a meal with you. Most supermarkets have a prepared food sections. You can buy entire meals with all the preparations done for you. Many times I ve grabbed a complete meal from Costco, popped the whole thing in the oven, and after homework is finished we sit down to a healthy meal. Try the grocery salad bar. You can put together your own mix of greens, veggies, protein, and other sides. Just be careful not to add too many of the unhealthy items such as cheese, bacon, or salad dressing. If you can t easily get to the grocery, try a meal delivery company. We ve done it many times with good results. Preparation is usually pretty minimal, and the meals are good. Many restaurants are starting to deliver so you don t have to eat pizza every weekend. You can have healthy, delicious food for dinner just by making a phone call. One neat idea I heard recently was a cooking club. Friends and neighbors get together to share in the shopping, cooking, and the best part, the eating. It s a great way to stay socially connected. If you still like to cook, stick to simple recipes that don t require a lot of ingredients or effort but pack a lot of nutrients. Plan your menu for the week ahead so you don t have to make many trips to the store. To limit the preparation work, consider using frozen ingredients, like vegetables, in your recipes. A simple way to add flavor to your meals is with seasonings and different herbs and spices. When cooking is too difficult, choose frozen meals that are microwavable. Just remember to read the nutrition label, watch out for too much sodium and sugar. If money or mobility are problems, look into social services. Programs like Meals on Wheels deliver nutritious meals twice a day to homes of seniors who can t cook or get out of the house. It s not free but is based on income level. Hopefully a few of these tips can help. Look for me in the Fitness Center. I m always looking to share recipes, just not my grandma s chili. That s still a family secret! Jay Laughter Yoga Thursday, November 9 2:00 p.m. Laughter is really the best medicine for body, mind and spirit! Laughter Yoga is a mind-body exercise which counteracts the negative effects of stress and has a profound effect on health and well being. In laughter yoga there is no need for jokes, comedy or even a sense of humor to receive the benefits of real laughter. It is accomplished through laughter exercises, deep breathing, stretching and playfulness. Cost for the class is $3.00 Register with payment by November 7 at the front desk or by calling Technology 101 November 11, 18, 25 Take advantage of this opportunity for private instructions on your ipad, smart phone, notebook, or other mobile devices.
