3 LEAKESVILLE VOICE October EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Laura Walley, LPN, Care Plans Ms. Walley has been a nurse for 10 years, with much of her career spent in long-term care settings, and is excited to start a new adventure with Leakesville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She is very passionate about taking care of the elderly and believes it is a true honor to do so. I believe God has placed me with this company for a reason, she said. Ms. Walley is the mother of four children Jacob, Harley, Sara and Meagan and is engaged to Jeff Dykes, who has two children, Cole and Grace. She is an avid photographer, a wedding coordinator and a caterer and enjoys decorating and cooking. Best wishes, Ms. Walley, to you and Mr. Dykes, and your soon-to-be-blended family! RESIDENT SUCCESS STORY Mark Lewis Mr. Lewis arrived at Leakesville with a maximum need of two people to help him stand from a sitting position, and now he can stand with the moderate help of one person. At first, he could stand for less than 30 seconds. Now, Mr. Lewis stands for 2 minutes, 45 seconds. He has increased his trunk flexion that s moving his upper body forward which enables him to reach from his waist and chest for items. He is able to brush his teeth and hair with setup; before, he needed minimum assistance. Way to go, Mr. Lewis! RESIDENT OF THE MONTH Gerald Scott Mr. Scott has been a resident at the facility for only a month, but he s already made quite the impact on the staff. Not only is he super friendly, Mr. Scott has a wonderful sense of humor and loves jamming to music. When he s not busy putting a smile on others faces, he enjoys relaxing outside. Thanks, Mr. Scott, for bringing the sunshine! ABOVE THE LINE EMPLOYEE Dianna Dixon, Resident Care Manager Ms. Dixon stays on top of records for our medical director, keeping them ready and handy. She has excellent knowledge of our residents and works the cart in the absence of regular employees, all while making sure her own Resident Care Manager duties are accomplished. Congratulations, Ms. Dixon! You re awesome!

6 6 LEAKESVILLE VOICE October 2018 A Letter from the Medical Director NATIONAL PHYSICAL THERAPY MONTH Physical therapy is a safe and effective way to treat chronic pain conditions. But did you know that physical therapy can help combat a growing opioid problem in America? October is National Physical Therapy Month, and the American Physical Therapy Association is using this time to educate Americans on its value. Trained physical therapists help their patients by identifying, diagnosing and treating movement issues with positive side effects like improved mobility, independence, and wellness. Movement, hands-on care, and patient information are natural and safe ways to treat pain, as opposed to opioids. Using these drugs increases the risk of depression as well as putting the patient at risk of overdose or addiction. While their use can help in some situations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urge emphasizing safe alternatives, such as physical therapy, for the relief of most long-term pain. David Northington, DO Medical Director There are several other benefits of physical therapy, including: Possibly avoiding surgery, such as for knee osteoarthritis and meniscal tears Better movement and mobility Preventing falls Improving balance Recovering from trauma or injury Managing age-related medical problems For more information, visit From the Desk of the Director of Nursing INTERNATIONAL INFECTION PREVENTION WEEK Oct is International Infection Prevention Week. Observed each third week of October, it brings attention to the role infection prevention plays in improving patient safety. This year s theme is Protecting Patients Everywhere. For individuals, the following tips can help reduce the spread of infection: Wash your hands. Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and rub the soap into the backs and palms of your hands as well as your wrists. Rinse well under running water, then dry your hands and wrists thoroughly. Cover a cough. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If one isn t available, cough or sneeze into your elbow, not your hand. Don t pick at healing wounds. Make sure your vaccinations are up to date. Wanda Khan, RN Director of Nursing In addition to the tips above, health care professionals help keep infection at bay with the following: Using gloves, masks and protective clothing. Following facility guidelines when dealing with blood or contaminated items. Ensuring patients rooms are clean and neat. Keeping skin around wound or incision dressings clean and dry.
