1 Volume 1 Issue 8 April 2010 CCAG Update Fundraising for Art Center ** Reminder ** Next meeting is on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 6:30 Centennial Library ** Art Challenge ** Spring Fever is the theme for our next meeting. Create you artwork for this theme and be the winner! Inside this issue: Art Center Update 1 Message from President 1 The answer to the question, How do you eat an elephant?, is one bite at a time. Next question, How do you raise $10,000.00? Answer: dollar by dollar. We need to think in terms of fundraising events and donations. Although this may seem like an unsurmountable task, it needs to be broken down into small pieces which we can digest. One thing we artists have in common is that we create our artwork. We need to find clever ways to raise money, starting with our basic skills. Take for example, the fundraising by Amy Simpson, who applied her sewing skills to make protective bags to carry art. Moreover, she took the bags and sold them to other artists. This is a simple, but powerful example of using our skills to produce a product or service and then find a way to market it. For more info, see column about Amy s fundraising effort. Some excellent ideas have been generated for fundraising, but ideas are not enough, we need an action plan. The fundraising and marketing committees will be calling you for your participation in these efforts. We hope you will rise to the challenge. We have a huge project developing for the art center and we need your help to make this happen. As you know, the election for new board members is approaching. You will be called by the nominating committee to be a part of the decision making board, which helps set goals and manages the operations needed to meet the goals. I know, we don t have enough time in our busy schedules, but we really can make time if we set our mind to it. If a board position is not feasible, then consider participating in a committee. I am soooooo proud of Amy Simpson for her effort we can all make a difference. Regards,

2 Program and Events Artistic activity in Northwest Las Vegas April 15 Program Nina Ten, The Card Lady of Send Out Cards Nina Ten: Nina provides a valuable service to business and individuals by using online tools to create and customized greeting card which is automatically sent to your friends, family or business contacts. So what does this mean for us artists? Your artwork can easily be uploaded and featured on the card. The message can customized with cursive handwriting. This can be a great way to market your artwork with samples of your own art. Or, you can use this card to say thank you to a customer who purchased your artwork. You can also upload your contacts and use the cards as a marketing campaign. Cards can be used for all occasions. The Resort on Mt Charleston Artist Marketplace Fundraiser Many of the members are participating in the art display at the Resort on Mt Charleston. The resort accommodates 2 artists on Saturday and Sunday during the months of March, April and May. We want to be sure to make a good impression for the resort by displaying our artwork in a professional manner. A table cover makes an impression and is a good way to hide our boxes under the table. The resort changed management 2 years ago, and they are making an attempt to renovate the building and draw more clients. Having the guild is a positive attraction, and another reason for the public to visit the resort. As the weather warms, more guest will arrive. People who visit the resort are split between Las Vegas locals residents and tourist who are visiting. If all goes well, we will continue our presence at the resort beyond the initial 3 month period. CCAG has obtained permission from the Eagle Crossroads Center (Hwy 215 & N. Decatur) to use the open area by the food court for an Artist s Market. This is an open area which could accommodate approximately 8 tents and is surrounded by several restaurants, a Starbucks, Yogurt Swirl and other businesses. This outdoor court is visible to traffic on Decatur and has the potential to be an excellent place to display art to the general public. The prerequisite are twofold: (1) we must provide liability insurance (2) we can try this for two weekends. If there are no complaints from any of the tenants, we can use this as a permanent place to exhibit our art. Today, we obtained liability insurance according to Jim Lane and so we will be scheduling some dates and will provide information to all guild members. Let s hear it for CCAG! Page 2

3 Amy Simpson Fundraising Project Amy is quite a seamstress and a marketeer. Amy designed art carrying bags which feature a shoulder strap and a zipper and come in various sizes to accommodate your art. The material is made from scrap material from dresses, jackets and other materials. Amy then took her finished product and sold it, and presented the guild with $110 in donations. Some of the buyers included: Carol Gehring Helen Wong Chieko Amadon Rosalee Haney Johnnie Guyon Melody Stein The bags are used to protect artwork during transportation to or from a show. A big thank you to all of the buyers and especially to Amy! More Fundraising Ideas Okay, we have a product, our artwork, right and services and we can use it for fundraising? In order for the public to enjoy our product, the public needs to know how and where it can be obtained. There are two areas to be discussed; product or service and marketing the product. Fundraising Ideas: Art Show Sales Art Classes Fee Art Workshop Fees Art Rummage Sale Art Carrying Bag Sale Silent Auction Art Entry Fees Hanging Fees Private Donations Buy & Sell Items Art Market at Food Court CCAG sponsored show Art Donations for Sale Fundraising Art Classes Now how do we let people know about these fundraising events? This is the challenge. Here are some of the ideas discussed during the last Marketing Committee meeting: 1) Create a CCAG event Flyer 2) Create a general CCAG Flyer 3) Use Facebook on the internet by establishing a CCAG business page. 4) Las Vegas PBS tv public broadcasting station will show events scheduled for non-profit organizations (that s us!) 5) Radio with the right connections, radio would make a good way to announce our events. 6) Review Journal and local View newspaper we need to create a press release to announce our event (who, why, where, when). We need group photos of our members and a story. 7) Art Magazines 8) Internet TV and Radio 9) Las Vegas Weekly (Sunday) 10) City Life (Review Journal) 11) Donation Packet for private donors including a flyer asking for a donation, proof of 501c3 status, and a Thank You receipt letter. The Marketing Committee is off to a great start, generating ideas and discovering connections members may have with businesses in the community. However, once again, we need your help to make this happen. So when you hear the call for volunteer committee members, these are some of the tasks to be managed. 4 Featured Artist Rosalee Haney Painting is very relaxing it helps me forget about everything except the image I am creating. Most of the time I listen to music while I paint. I enjoy rock n roll, especially Elton John (Benny and the Jets) and Phil Collins. Other side things I used to do are fishing and snorkeling. I was 65 years old when I snorkled for the first time! I have been painting for 21 years, mostly with my instructor (Chieko Amadon). I paint with oil and pastel and enjoy western art and animals for subjects. I have been know to also paint on tiles, plates and greeting cards. I really enjoy painting at class or at home. Please enjoy some of my art. Rosalee Haney Best Friends Wyoming Winter Hushed Page 4

5 Featured Artist Jim Lane I paint outdoors and in my studio, as well as attending painting classes and workshops. I paint from actual scenes, photography, reference, memory and imagination. Everyday scenes are taken for granted, but on some rare occasions, when light and atmosphere are just right, the vistas take on a new dimension. This is what I try to capture to make the everyday exciting but realistic. Vivid sunrise and sunset skies are a favorite background for my landscapes and seascapes.
