2 EMPLOYEE ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITES Mystic Seaport is pleased to announce the creation of 2 new funds for employees to have opportunities for professional development. LISA COOK REED EMPLOYEE ENRICHMENT FUND Lisa Cook Reed was a long time Mystic Seaport staff member whose positive nature and love of the sea enriched all of us who knew her. She passed away on August 27, Lisa was born in 1953 and grew up in Darien, CT with three younger brothers. It was there that she learned to sail in a Dyer Dow - the same boat she used many years later to compete in the evening races at Mystic Seaport. While in her high school years at Dana Hall in Wellesley, MA, she credited her history teacher, Matthew Stackpole, and his class field trip to Mystic Seaport, with sparking her interest in history. Lisa s career at Mystic Seaport spanned four decades. After graduating from Skidmore College in 1975 with a degree in Sociology/Anthropology, she began her first job at age 21 as a Museum teacher at the Seaport. She later accepted a position as Supervisor of Education, where she managed programs for school, youth and family audiences. After taking time off to raise a family and work with other non-profit institutions, Lisa returned to the Seaport in 1993 to manage the Annual Fund (then part of the Membership Department) followed by a position four years later in the Development Department as Campaign Coordinator. Lisa then served as Director of Membership from before returning to the Development Department as Director of Development and Membership. Always humble and unassuming, Lisa took on each new responsibility with grace and determination. Lisa was married to Bill Reed, an accomplished sailor, and had two children, Will and Macy, who also share a love of sailing. Lisa lived a full life, pursuing her work and interests with passion and cherishing the friends and family who surrounded her. She will be remembered as intelligent, thoughtful, loyal, supportive and loving. She also had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good laugh at life s many ironies. Through her leadership of the Membership and Development Departments and the PILOTs program, Lisa befriended many of the Museum s longstanding members and supporters. She was genuinely interested in the lives of the people she met and was beloved by all those who were fortunate to make her acquaintance.

3 In addition to her many leadership roles at Mystic Seaport, Lisa s enduring mark will be her character. Lisa had the rare gift of making everyone feel welcome and appreciated. Her memory will live on in the friendships she forged, her contribution as a valued employee at the Seaport and the innumerable acts of kindness she extended to those she knew. Now through the generosity of family, friends and colleagues, Lisa will continue to make an indelible mark on the staff of Mystic Seaport through this fund for staff professional development and personal enrichment. In keeping with Lisa s spirit of generosity and her deep love for the employees of Mystic Seaport, this Fund will afford Museum RFT and RPT staff the opportunity to follow their passion in meaningful and memorable ways that deepen their connection to the Museum and its mission. There will be annual awards of designated cash amounts given to enhance a staff member s connection to Mystic Seaport, Museums, the Community and Education. Expenses covered: Travel to/from location Lodging/meals (Cap on Hotel costs/per diem) Registration fees/admission fees/sponsorship fees/supplies Up to $ 10, will be available each calendar year through this fund. Each proposal submitted should not exceed $ 5, Eligibility and process for bestowing award; Open to all Regular Full and Part-time employees (who have completed 1 year of service by March 1, 2104.) Department Directors, VPs and above are not eligible for this award. Employees will present a brief proposal (not to exceed 1 page) that includes the following: o Details of event/site visit etc. Dates/Location o Details regarding costs of event (lodging, registration, travel, etc.) o Intended outcome of event as it relates to employee Department Directors review proposal to ensure it is complete.

4 Proposals are submitted and reviewed by a 3 person selection committee to be made up by; o 1 Full Time Staff Member (except of Directors, VP & above) o 1 Member of Mystic Seaport Community (ie Volunteer, Trustee) o 1 Friend/Family Member of Lisa Reed Awardees will be selected and notified. Following the event, awardee will provide a summary of their experience to be shared in upcoming Staff Bulletin and also with the donors to the fund. Some sample use of award monies may be visiting another museum or historic site; attending a conference related to employee s professional development; excursions related to field of work; registration for classes or certification in a relevant field. All ideas are encouraged to be submitted. More than one application maybe selected at a time if the funding is available for that year. The Director of Development (Chris Freeman) will convene the Committee and be contact for any questions regarding award and/or processes. Applications should be sent to Jeanne Gade by March 21, Recipients will be notified in mid April. PILOTS STAFF FELLOWSHIP The PILOTS Staff Fellowship program recognizes the important role that all Museum colleagues play in the success of Mystic Seaport. The PILOTS themselves are among the many beneficiaries of the dedication and commitment of Museum colleagues. The PILOTS Staff Fellowships are monetary awards that support a wide range of purposeful activities including: continuing education internships research skills development training certification special projects.

5 Eligibility Criteria Candidates for PILOTS Staff Fellowships must be regular full or regular part time employees of Mystic Seaport with tenure of at least 12 months and no open disciplinary actions. Application Process Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis based on the timeframe of the proposed fellowship and should be made not less than 60 days prior to the activity or program dates. Applications should be made directly to your department supervisor in writing in the form of a letter that articulates the following: Employee name and contact information Description of project or activity that will be pursued Date(s) of the program or activity Use and or purpose for the requested funds Explanation of relevance to colleagues role at Mystic Seaport Expected outcomes Department Directors must approve all applications which will be forwarded to a review panel comprised of one Museum staff member and two active members of the PILOTS Corps. Awards Process Upon receipt, the review panel will vet applications and make decisions about awards. Frequency and amount of wards will be at the sole discretion of the review panel. The PILOTS Steering Committee has expressed a desire to cap cumulative award amounts to $10,000 annually. Reporting Process Successful Fellows will be expected to deliver a report, in writing or in person, to the PILOTS corps; about their experiences and the outcomes of their project or activity. Fellows will also be asked to furnish receipts for the expenses covered by the fellowship award. The deadline for submission to the PILOTs fund is May 1, Please forward applications to Jeanne Gade.
