5 Galapagos Islands Exhibit This exhibition explores the science and sensation of the Galápagos the cradle of evolutionary biology. These remote islands inspired Charles Darwin s theory of natural selection, and serves as living laboratory for ongoing scientific research. In 1979, the Galapagos Islands became the very first UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Sternberg hosts the North American premiere of a new exhibit developed by the Zoological, University of Zurich, Switzerland. Enduring Roots This exhibition features flower drawings by Gena Kearn, a Fort Hays State University graduate student and art educator from Concordia, Kansas. Kearn is pursuing a Masters of Liberal Studies with a concentration in studio art and these works were created as part of her studies. As a university museum, Sternberg is pleased to provide a public venue for relevant academic and creative endeavors by FHSU students. Highly detailed, realistic illustrations of flowers combine with original, ornate Celtic cross designs to comprise this exhibition of large colored pencil drawings. For Kearn, the series provides an opportunity to integrate three elements that are integral to her identity her love of flowers, her Irish heritage, and her Christian faith. Kearn inherited a love of flowers from both branches of her family tree. She is continually inspired by their soft forms, vibrant colors, and by the challenge of drawing them realistically. Also found in both branches of Kearn s family tree is the Irish lineage that has captivated her since childhood and that fuels her passion for Celtic artwork. She honors her Irish heritage by incorporating traditional Celtic motifs into her intricate Celtic crosses. As Kearn composes each drawing, she selects Celtic designs which have been attributed with meanings that she can merge with the symbolism of flowers through the lens of her Christian faith in an effort to use the enduring roots of her life to communicate a message of light, love, and hope. Enduring Roots will run through June 2, Winter Hours Tuesday to Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
