1 JANUARY 5, 2018 MESSAGE FROM STEVE WHITE At this point in the annual calendar, we naturally look backward on what was and also forward for what will be. We are hopefully satisfied with our accomplishments and yet we anticipate all that comes with the promise of a new year, personally and professionally. In the spirit of reflecting on what has been, I must say thank you to each and every staff member and volunteer. You pulled hard on the oars, sometimes solo (security late at night!) and sometimes as a team (Lantern Light Tours!). You treated each other with the respect and dignity that defines us, and you helped visitors, often confused or not entirely comfortable in our maritime and historical world here, find their way and find meaning within their experiences at Mystic Seaport. You have helped school children find inspiration and helped seasoned researchers find answers to their queries. You ve shaped wood; you shaped values. Personally, I am so grateful for our efforts at the Museum to perpetuate the importance of history and truth. We have invested a great deal into the future of the Museum with the combination of staff expertise, Board leadership, and donor generosity. We are poised to embark on an exhibition voyage from the Shipyard to Thompson that will celebrate the rich and diverse maritime stories over time that have helped to define civilization then and now. These stories we ll share this year span over 1,000 years. It s truly exciting to see everyone s efforts realized through experiences that will undoubtedly inspire visitors, staff, and volunteers to visit time and time again. In 2018 we will blend the old with new, the expected with unexpected, grit with curiosity, and discovery with perseverance. There are many reasons for optimism here at Mystic Seaport Museum. Spread the word. I am reminded this moment, perhaps by the spirit of optimism, of Maya Angelou s powerful Inaugural Poem (1993). I just now read it again, and recommend that you do as well. Immense. It closes this way: Here on the pulse of this new day You may have the grace to look up and out And into your sister's eyes, into Your brother's face, your country And say simply Very simply With hope Good morning. Good day all! -Steve White
2 2018 MALLORY INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM DEADLINE JANUARY 31, 2018 I am pleased to announce that proposals are now being accepted for the 2018 Mallory International Exchange Fellowship Program. The Mallory Exchange Fellowship will be used for professional international exchange at a foreign museum, library, historic site, or other educational institution for research and study purposes. The Mallory Endowment was established in 1993 by Wade and Angela Thompson to honor Clifford and Pauline Mallory for their many years of service to Mystic Seaport. The stated purpose of the fund is...to create an international exchange program between the Seaport and other institutions... The intent is that one year an international scholar, in any discipline related to Mystic Seaport s mission, will come to the Museum for study and research purposes; in alternate years, a Mystic Seaport staff member will visit a foreign museum for study and research purposes. A number of staff exchanges have taken place since the inception of the fund, with the first exchange taking place with Hobson Wharf, Maritime Museum of Auckland, New Zealand, in honor of Mrs. Mallory s native country. Proposal Guidelines: The Proposal should be submitted by a Mystic Seaport staff member to travel to another site for research or other specific study purposes at a foreign museum, library, historic site, or other educational institution. The submitter of the successful proposal(s) will have the general responsibilities of any project manager-- to ensure that funds are spent according to the approved budget, and to prepare a 1-2 page narrative project report at the conclusion of the project, which the Advancement Office may forward to the donor. Funds are available to fund one or more projects (total funding for the Fellowship Program not to exceed $8,500). Each proposal must contain: - Project Title - Title Page including name and signature of staff member, department director, and vice president sponsoring the proposal. - Project Abstract (1-2 page maximum) including goals and intended outcomes of the project, description of the resources to be researched, and names of colleagues for consultation. - A letter of support from the foreign institution. - Project Budget indicating proposed budget period and detailed breakdown of expenses not to exceed $8,500 per project. - Proposed exchange timeframe and schedule. - Applicant resume. Due date is January 31, Send proposals to Jeanne Gade, Director of Human Resources, for transmittal to Mallory Fellowship Selection Committee for review. Late submissions will not be accepted.
3 Proposal Evaluation and Selection: Proposals will be evaluated by the Selection Committee on a number of different criteria, with the overriding factor being the relationship of proposed activities to the advancement of Mystic Seaport s mission and strategic initiatives. The top 3 proposals may be shared with the donors for their involvement and input prior to making the final selection. Selections will be announced in early March, Susan Funk Thank You MSM Friends!
