2 AASFAA: Above and Beyond Prior Years Welcome from your AASFAA President: What a year! I have been so blessed to have worked with an amazing group of volunteers while serving as AASFAA President. With the guidance of a great group of hard working Board members, many of whom are relatively new to the Association and leadership, the purpose of AASFAA to provide training and support for its members has been achieved. The 2017 AASFAA Spring Conference: Above and Beyond Prior Years is teaming with worthwhile and timely topics. The Local Arrangements Committee, Program Committee, Conference Committee, and numerous other volunteers have been working diligently in preparation for this outstanding training opportunity. We have our favorite FED, David Bartnicki, joining us. Dave will be leading four sessions, including the Ask a Fed session to wrap up the conference on Thursday. Joining us from our own region are Marian Dill, SASFAA President, and Charles Harper, TASFAA President Elect. President Dill has worked diligently to ensure SASFAA is wellrepresented at the national level and the concerns of Alabama and the other Southern states are known. As part of the SASFAA leadership swap, Charles Harper will be sharing his knowledge relating to multi-generational offices. We are also fortunate to have two NASFAA staffers with us this year. Amanda Sharp will be leading the NASFAA U Credentialing Courses. With prior-prior year, PJ is a hot topic as is COA. She will also conduct a session on R2T4s and modules. Karen McCarthy will join us from Washington, D.C. to provide a Hill Update as well as serve as the keynote speaker Wednesday morning. As the Director of Policy Analysis, Ms. McCarthy will address Data Security, HEA, and FERPA. Given the recent DRT issue relating to data security, this topic could not be timelier. Speaking of DRT, AASFAA is very fortunate to have a representative from the Internal Revenue Service as a presenter. Terre Lee will address topics that impact each of our offices daily. The Diversity Committee identified a very deserving charity, Open Hands and Overflowing Hearts. This organization was founded by Kayla Funk, an AU college student, to raise funds for childhood cancer research. Hopefully, you have already purchased your AASFAA t-shirt and will wear it proudly in support of this charity. The Diversity Committee will continue to accept donations at the conference, and I feel confident AASFAAians will continue our tradition of support. The theme Above and Beyond Prior Years speaks to prior-prior year, and it also addresses the personal aspect. Each year, we say goodbye to friends due to retirement and job changes as we welcome new members. In addition to gaining knowledge from attendance at these outstanding sessions, I believe a major benefit of the conference is networking. Make time to get to know someone new. Share contact information and continue to build on relationships formed at the 2017 AASFAA Spring Conference.

I cannot begin to thank those who have helped me (and hence GSCC students) during the years I have been fortunate to be involved in AASFAA. Although my tenure is ending in this role, I plan to continue to support the Association in other ways. I encourage you to consider serving as well. 4 AASFAA: Above and Beyond Prior Years Welcome from your AASFAA President-Elect: Welcome to the 2017 AASFAA Conference! It has been several years since we have visited the Florence area, and I am excited to be back! I am looking forward to a few days away from the daily responsibilities of the financial aid office to be able to spend time with colleagues brushing up on regulations, learning what may be on the horizon, and relaxing with friends! The 2017 conference committee has worked hard to create an information-filled agenda that will help fulfill your training needs, whether you are a first-time attendee, or a seasoned expert. Many thanks to Jennifer Epperson and her committee for all of their hard work over these past months! I am particularly excited about the charity we are supporting this spring. The Open Hands, Overflowing Hearts organization supports research for pediatric cancers, founded by a nineteen-year old student at Auburn University after her own diagnosis. If you have not already done so, I hope you will purchase a new AASFAA t-shirt and help support this organization! It is and has been my pleasure to serve alongside such talented and dedicated individuals in our organization this year. We are fortunate to be a part of a profession and a professional organization that works to help students dreams come true. Tuesday: Beginning at 8:00 a.m., coffee service will be available in the Atrium. Lunch: Plated deli sandwich: turkey, marinated steak, and chicken salad, gourmet chips, fruit, cookie, iced tea, and water. Dinner: Buffett with salad, penne with Pomodoro sauce, fettucine with alfredo sauce, and sliced grilled chicken, cheesecake variety, iced tea and water. 8 Conference Charity Open Hands and Overflowing Hearts AASFAA will be selling t-shirts at this year s conference. Proceeds from t-shirt sales will benefit Open Hands and Overflowing Hearts. Donations may also be made on-site during the conference to support this charity. Kayla Funk Founder Christen Perry Mother of Open Hands Overflowing Hearts founder, Kayla Funk and guest speaker for Tuesday s luncheon. History: Days turned to weeks, weeks turned to months, and before she knew it, 19-year-old Kayla had been battling cancer for over a year. She suffered through everything known to her doctors to treat her neuroblastoma. Treatment left Kayla sick, skinny, and exhausted. Her doctor hoped to share her final scan result as NED, or no evidence of disease, but when he called Kayla and her family into his office one August afternoon, the news that left his mouth stung everyone s ears. Your cancer is incurable, he said. Our goal must switch to maintenance. We will have this conversation once and only once, but you need to decide what it is you want to accomplish or experience, should this cancer take your life, and you need to do it. We will try to keep your disease at bay, but frankly, I don t know if we can do that for six weeks, six months, or six years. Kayla confidently replied, I want to go to school. She had moved into her freshman dorm at Auburn the day before, and she was ready to be in classes like others her age. She drove back to Auburn, and she took freshman year by storm, though it did look a little different than she expected. Kayla received experimental therapies to try to slow the progression of her disease in Atlanta in the afternoons after her classes in the mornings. Though tired and sick, Kayla loved being back in school. Alongside her classes and treatments, Kayla and her family founded Open Hands Overflowing Hearts as a way to raise money for childhood cancer research. The words I don t know plagued Kayla; no one had an answer to her questions, why, how, or what do we do? Her passion became to eliminate those words. No longer would doctors tell patients, I don t know. No longer would parents tell children, I don t know. No longer would children tell their friends, I don t know. Kayla wanted to eradicate childhood cancer and subsequently eradicate those three words from the vocabulary of pediatric oncologists. Supporters of Kayla became supporters of Open Hands Overflowing Hearts. Friends, family, and total strangers came out of the woodwork to help Kayla and her cause. In the first three months of OHOH s existence, donors raised over $300,000. Businesses were donating percentages of sales. Moms were forfeiting their Starbucks in order to donate. Children were hosting lemonade stands. Schools were challenging each other to see who could raise the most money. The momentum could have caused a tsunami. Since those early days of fundraising for childhood cancer research, OHOH has seen miracles of epic proportions and tragedies that will rock you to your core. Children have been cured, and children have passed away. Every child s story propels the organization further. Whether one of victory or loss, a kid s battle with cancer moves people to action. At OHOH, we hope to shine the light on childhood cancer and raise money to fund research that will bring an end to the suffering. Please join us in our fight. One child is one too many.

9 Our FED David Bartnicki Title IV Training Officer David has worked for the U.S. Department of Education s Federal Student Aid Office for over 22 years. He has served as an Institutional Review Specialist, Institutional Improvement Specialist (IIS), Branch Chief for Contract Compliance and is currently a Federal Training Officer. David s entire government career has been in the Atlanta Regional Office where he currently works directly with over 1,100 postsecondary schools in the Southeast Region. As a training officer, David provides training and technical assistance on a wide variety of federal student aid topics to schools, state agencies, accreditation bodies and higher education organizations through a variety of state, regional, national and Department venues. While in FSA, David has helped redesign the FSA Assessment Modules, developed the popular Ask A FED booth at the annual FSA Conferences, and developed the Department s compliance review process for ED s private collection agencies. David serves on the Conference Delivery Team, the Clery Act Training Development Team, and the National Verification Team. In addition, David has received several financial aid awards including the 2016 GASFAA (GA) Service Award, the 2014 Certificate of Recognition from the State of Alabama Governor Bentley s Office; 2013 FSA Award for Most Innovative Team, 2013 FASFAA Distinguished Service Award (FL), 2013 TASFAA Distinguished Service Award (TN), the 2012 SASFAA Distinguished Service Award (Southern Regional), the 2012 AASFAA John H. Buchanan Distinguished Service Award (AL), 2012 MASFAA Special Recognition Award (MS), the 2011 Kentucky Admiral Award, 2010 FSA Award for Best Mission Results, the 2005 Florida Public Career Technical Center s Merit Award, the 2003 SCASFAA Distinguished Service Award (SC), the 2003 AASFAA Award of Merit (AL) and the 2001 NCASFAA Award of Merit (NC). When not working, David enjoys spending time with his wife, Christy, and sons Luke (17), Adam (16), and Ethan (12).

10 AASFAA Dinner Speaker Tuesday, April 11 th Marian Dill SASFAA President Marian Malone Dill currently serves as Director of Financial Aid for Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. Prior to her arrival at Lee in 1998, Marian was the Assistant Director of Financial Aid at Cleveland State Community College and a financial aid counselor at Tennessee Wesleyan College. A highlight of her career occurred in March 2014 when she testified before the U.S. Senate HELP Committee on student loan reform. Marian s financial aid career began as a student worker in the federal work study program. As a firstgeneration college graduate and recipient of Title IV aid, she earned an early appreciation for the benefits of assistance and now enjoys the opportunity to help students navigate the financial aid process in order to reach their educational goals. Marian Dill currently serves as President for SASFAA, the Southern Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. She has also served as Vice President, a New Aid Officers Workshop (NAOW) Trainer, Budget /Finance Chair and Membership Chair. She is also a member of TASFAA, the Tennessee Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, where she has held the positions of President, Treasurer, District Chair and Chair of the Financial Aid Awareness Committee. She has served on various committees and boards, including the boards of Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) and Tennessee Student Assistance Alliance and across the Lee University Campus. Dill has also enjoyed presenting at The College Board - PowerFAIDS National User Conference. She earned her M.Ed. in Community Counseling at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Marian is married to Michael Dill. They enjoy hiking and admiring the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains. She also enjoys traveling and spending time with family.

11 Breakfast Speaker & Break-Out Session Presenter Wednesday, April 12 th Charles Harper TASFAA President-Elect Charles is the Director of Financial Aid and Associate Director of Student Financial Services combining the offices of Financial Aid/Student Accounts at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. He has been at Belmont for 21 years, all in the Financial Aid/Student Financial Services office where he has served in various positions from the front line to the current position of Director. Charles is the current President-Elect for TASFAA and will serve on the SASFAA Executive Board for the aid year. Charles has a BS degree in Liberal Studies from Belmont as well as a M.Ed. in Organizational Leadership and Change where his focus was on working with and managing a Multigenerational workforce in a millennial age. When not working, Charles serves as a youth leader for his church and enjoys time with his wife, Jamie and coaching the baseball teams for his two sons Brennan (12) and Aiden (7).

12 General & Break-Out Session Presenter Tuesday, April 11 th & Wednesday, April 12 th Karen McCarthy NASFAA Karen is the Director of Policy Analysis at NASFAA. She began her career in student aid working in the financial aid offices at several large, 4-year institutions, including Boston University, Miami University of Ohio, and The Ohio State University. She serves on the Department of Education s FAFSA Advisory Group and has served as NASFAA s representative at negotiating rulemaking sessions, both as a resource for school-based negotiators and as a negotiator herself. She has worked with various NASFAA task forces including Reauthorization, Campus-based Allocation Formula, Public Service Loan Forgiveness, Graduate and Professional Issues, FAFSA Simplification, One Grant One Loan, and R2T4. A native of Massachusetts, she earned a bachelor s degree from Cornell University and a master s degree from The Ohio State University.

Terre Lee Senior Stakeholder Relationship & Tax Consultant, IRS/W&I/CARE/SPEC-Birmingham Janis Terre Lee (Terre) is a Senior Tax Consultant with the Internal Revenue Service s outreach and education division. She works with IRS partners to help taxpayers understand their tax obligations and form new habits leading to a healthier financial lifestyle. She received her B.S. in Finance from the University of the State of New York and has worked in insurance compliance prior to her almost 15 years with the U.S. government. After living in Atlanta, New York City, and Miami, she now resides in Gadsden with a troupe of spoiled animals.

14 NASFAA Credentialing Courses & Break-Out Session Presenter Monday, April 10 th & Wednesday, April 12 th Amanda Sharp NASFAA Amanda Sharp is the Online Instruction Manager at the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA). Amanda joined NASFAA in 2013 where her primary responsibilities involve the management of NASFAA's online instruction programs including NASFAA webinars, NASFAA U online courses, and NASFAA Learning Bytes. In addition to those duties, she also takes part in updating NASFAA Student Aid Index, NASFAA publications, writing and presenting NASFAA training materials and webinars, instructing facilitated online courses, and responding to questions regarding regulatory issues through NASFAA s AskRegs program. Amanda received both her bachelor s and master s degrees from the University of North Alabama where she later served as the Associate Director of Student Financial Services. Amanda telecommutes from right here in Florence, Alabama where she lives in the middle of nowhere with her husband Mark, two dogs, two cats, and 25 chickens. She enjoys running, working outdoors, and, most of all, spending time with her three (soon to be four) precious grandchildren!

We will discuss some of the common problems, pitfalls, misunderstandings, and errors associated with tax filing. This session begins with an explanation of what is a modular program for Return of Title IV funds purposes. Participants will then learn how to identify when a student has withdrawn from a modular program and how to determine the student s withdrawal date and the percentage of the payment period or period of enrollment completed. The session also include3s examples illustrating the application of the Return of Title IV funds provisions to students enrolled in modular programs. You may also contact any member of the conference committee for assistance. Elections AASFAA elections are an important responsibility of AASFAA membership. Please exercise your membership privilege and select the leadership of your association by voting. Remember that all paid AASFAA members can participate, including individuals who are exhibitors.
