2 Welcome from your AASFAA President: Welcome to the Spring 2018 Conference and the 50th Anniversary Celebration of AASFAA! It is the Golden Age of AASFAA and we are back at the beach! The 2018 Spring Conference is packed with valuable topics and training opportunities to assist each of us in our professional endeavors. The Local Arrangements, Program, and Conference Committees, as well as numerous volunteers have worked tirelessly to bring together these remarkable training and networking opportunities to assist each of us as we continue the great service we provide daily to Alabama students. We welcome our guests and presenters who have traveled from various locations to offer exceptional training opportunities and valuable information on how we can better assist our students as well as how to serve and get more involved in AASFAA: David Bartnicki, our favorite federal trainer will conduct four sessions throughout the conference and will close out our conference on Friday with the Ask a Fed session. Dr. Sharon Oliver, SASFAA President, will provide us with updates on SASFAA and the importance of getting involved with your State, Regional and National associations. Stacey Walker, MASFAA President, will be joining us as a part of the SASFAA leadership swap, and provide insight on the bias that can easily occur with Professional Judgement cases. Karen McCarthy, NASFAA Director of Policy Analysis will join us to provide an NASFAA update as well as a session on legislative regulations and how they affect you. A special welcome to the Past-Presidents who have returned to help us commensurate this Golden Anniversary. It is through your servant leadership and guidance that AASFAA has continued to make an impact on the financial aid and higher education communities, at the local, regional, and national level. As we celebrate this milestone anniversary of AASFAA, I am reminded of the service and commitment that our association provides to our students beyond our profession, and the importance of servant leadership. Our impact is far-reaching. This year, the Diversity Committee has selected an outstanding organization, Magic Moments, as the charity for our conference which continues to support our love of service to others. Magic Moments, provides nonmedical moments to children ages four-18 with chronic life-threatening illnesses in the State of Alabama. In addition, Magic Moments supports Beyond the Moments, a program which aids terminally ill children and their parents. I challenge everyone to support this great organization. If you have not already purchased a t-shirt, please stop by the registration table and do so to continue the tradition of AAASFA s legacy of charity and servant leadership. It has been a humbling and rewarding experience to serve as your AASFAA President during this past year. It has been a wild ride full of learning, team building, and collaborating, and a year I will not soon forget. A sincere thank you is offered to the AASFAA Executive Board for their unwavering support and encouragement during my tenure. Service is at the core of what we do! Each of you have diligently stepped up to ensure that not only our students are provided an opportunity for a life-changing education, but to guarantee that the association runs with character, grace and dignity in every way. And to the AASFAA membership, as my tenure comes to a close many thanks for all that you do and continue to do in support of the association. Consider getting involved and networking with your colleagues and take advantage of all AASFAA has to offer. It is my desire that every attendee will leave the conference with a rejuvenated spirit to continue to tackle the daily challenges that we face as we strive to continue our legacy of assisting Alabama students. Happy Golden Anniversary AASFAA! With Gratitude Theresa Mays AASFAA President

Donations to support Magic Moments may also be made on-site during the conference. Sandy Naramore, Executive Director of Magic Moments, will be our guest speaker Wednesday during the Opening Session. Mission Statement: It is our mission to grant non-medical moments to children ages 4-18 with chronic life-threatening illnesses in the state of Alabama as well as continue a relationship Beyond the Moment. History: Magic Moments was founded in 1984 with the sole purpose of providing happiness to children throughout the state of Alabama who are diagnosed with chronic life-threatening illnesses. As Birmingham mother Shelley Clark was spending time in and out of Children s Hospital (now Children s of Alabama), she saw a television program about a chronically ill boy who wanted to ride on a fire truck. The story of his community s endeavor to fulfill his request, right down to the firemen entering his hospital room window via a hook and ladder truck, inspired her to offer hope and joy to local children with life-threatening illnesses by turning their dreams into realities. Shelley shared her idea with her daughter s pediatrician, who put her in touch with L.E. Patton, play therapist at Children s Hospital. Coincidentally, at about the same time, fellow Birmingham mother Buffie Marks, who volunteered in play therapy at Children s, had a similar idea after having seen a national broadcast about a wish granting organization. L.E. suggested Shelley and Buffie collaborate. Soon, with the blessings of hospital administration and a $500 grant from the Junior League of Birmingham, Magic Moments was born. To date Magic Moments has provided over 4,600 magic moments for children in all 67 counties of Alabama. Not only does Magic Moments provide children with non-medical opportunities such as a family trip to Disney World, meeting a celebrity of choice, or going on a shopping spree, we provide on-going events to enhance the relationships between our staff and families as well as relationships with other families. In 1997 we extended out programs to include Family Camp held each Memorial Day weekend at Children s Harbor on Lake Martin, which accommodates the medical needs of the children we serve. Family Camp provides time for families to relax and spend time together for three days in a stress-free environment as well as rekindle relationships with other families and make new friendships. Camp is offered free of charge to our families and accommodates approximately 70 children and their family members. In 2013 the Family Camp concept was expanded further and we began providing year-round, ongoing support for our families. These opportunities, known as Beyond the Moments, include activities such as family nights at regional ballparks, Valentine s Day ice skating parties, and breakfast with Santa. Beyond the Moment opportunities are offered to families at no expense. Magic Moments has five full-time and one part-time staff member. We operate under a 24-member Board of Directors and are supported by a 23-member Advisory Council as well as Councils in Montgomery and Mobile. We pride ourselves in being the only wish granting organization dedicated solely to the children of Alabama.

10 Sharon Oliver SASFAA President AASFAA Breakfast Speaker Thursday, March 29th I have experienced a rewarding career in financial aid for more than twenty-five years. I find the work I do in my current position extremely gratifying because I am often afforded an opportunity to empathize with families from diverse economic backgrounds and to encourage them to make their dreams a reality. I currently serve as the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Scholarships and Student Aid at North Carolina Central University. I have served in various capacities at the postsecondary level including Chief Accountant, Bursar, and Enrollment Manager. Therefore, I fully understand the role financial aid plays in meeting fiscal responsibilities of private as well as public institutions. dynamic Executive Board. I am actively involved in the national, state, and regional financial aid professional associations. I have grown tremendously in the financial aid profession while serving as SAFAA s President. Beyond networking with members from nine states, I have had the privilege of building relations with five regional Presidents, NASFAA staff, and other key officials. It has been an honor and a privilege to lead SASFAA for with the support of a Of the many rewarding volunteer experiences that I have had, serving as the SASFAA Leadership Symposium Chairperson, has been quite rewarding. In this capacity, I played an integral role with the development of future leaders who are serving and supporting the state and regional associations as officers, committee chairpersons, committee members and volunteers. My personal interest includes volunteering within the community to ensure that families are aware of funding for college. It is indeed a privilege and an honor for me to have an opportunity to work with young people to provide assistance for making their dreams become a reality. My career has been punctuated with a series of rewarding growth experiences. One of my most rewarding work experiences has been working in the financial aid office and helping families through tough financial situations. I am often asked, How can I provide the high level of support and services to difficult families and students? My response is simple: because I care. I care to listen, I care to understand, I care to help and I care to provide solutions. I care because I have walked in the shoes of many of the students and families that we serve, so I fully understand the challenges and frustration. I strongly believe in Mahatma Gandhi's quote about serving and caring for others: The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
