1 Dear Xavier Family- October begins an important season for Xavier the months in which we tell our story to prospective students and their families so that we can continue to offer this world-class education to the next classes of young people while always building young leaders for our Church. In the weeks ahead, we will have our annual Xavier Preview Night perhaps you recall bringing your own family to this student-run event and being impressed by the quality of the product that we produce. I am always amazed by the work of our student ambassadors as they host individual families, lead the open house by demonstrating their skills and knowledge, and generally represent Xavier with pride and honor. If you know of any local families who are in the process of making a high school decision, encourage them to join us on October 25. Share your Xavier experience with them. Our best advertisement is our young people. The more people know the students who make the Xavier community, the more they will want their students to be a part of things. On Friday, October 27, we renew our annual tradition of giving back to our local community during the afternoon by completing service projects and parishes, homes and community organizations throughout the area. This is a great way for parishoners and people in need to interact with Xavier students, and the lessons of the day are impactful for our young people and staff. Imagine taking the afternoon to rake an elderly person s lawn, to organize clothes at a charity, or to visit with residents at an assisted living facility. Now imagine being able to do it with a teacher or trusted adult, as well as new friends from other grades at Xavier. The ice cream treat to end the afternoon is often the cherry on top of a mission-driven day. How can you help? We always need chaperons who can drive a group of students and serve with them. Consider taking the afternoon to join us. I promise you will not regret it. Throughout the winter, we send groups of students or staff to all of our local schools to celebrate Xavier. We aim to have a presence in every parish and every Catholic school in the area. Help us to spread the message about Xavier by being active in your parish. One of the best things we can do as a Xavier community is to thank our parishes for their generous support by being leaders and frequent volunteers. Make Mass a priority and thank the pastor for supporting us at Xavier. Volunteer for a parish event and wear your Xavier gear. Send your younger children to Catholic school dressed in Xavier colors and clothes. Together, we can remind the Fox Valley of the power of a Xavier experience. Thank you in advance for cooperating in this important task. Pray for our 8 th graders that they may be blessed with wisdom and courage, and that they might find their way to Xavier and learn to lead and serve one another. Xavier Preview Night is designed for you to talk to administrators, counselors, teachers, parents and current students about Xavier. Is Xavier going to be the best fit for your student? Are the course offerings, high expectations, and peer group at Xavier what s best for your student? How will Xavier help your student develop and grow in his/her faith? Seventh Grade Day Friday, November 3, :00 am to 2:00 pm Xavier High School All seventh graders from throughout the Fox Valley are invited to visit Xavier for a special day to learn more about what Xavier has to offer. CAMP FOR KIDS WITH AUTISM The 12 th Annual Football Camp for Kids with Autism was held on Saturday, September 9, on the Rocky Bleier Field at Xavier. The varsity football team members conducted ten different football stations through which the campers rotated. The campers and players concluded the camp with a celebratory tunnel, followed by a free lunch in the Xavier commons sponsored by the Autism Society and prepared and served by volunteer football parents. Theses cards cannot be used in any othe state. If you are looking to buy Festival cards - they are listed as Festival Foods (WI) Skogens. It is never too late to start to purchase scrip to help with your Tuition and other school costs. If you have purchased scrip in the past and want to start again let us know and we would be glad to help you. If yow would like your children to pick up your Scrip order and bring it home for you, please fill out a permission slip and return to your school office. the permission slip is available on the Xavier website or at the school office. Climb Theatre Bullying presentation. Xavier, along with the Appleton Public Schools will again be participating the Climb Theatre s presentation on Bullying. During the week of October 2nd, all freshmen in the Appleton Area will engage in a 45 minute classroom presentation. That week, Xavier students will witness the harm that harassment can have on a person and the surrounding community, as well as explore how they can impact a change. Through a series of activities, discussions, scenes and role plays, the hurtful nature of harassment is brought to light. The importance of being an active bystander is emphasized and practiced. Your child will be empowered to step in to situations when they see others being targeted and help put an end to bullying. Parents who do not wish to have their student attend this presentation should contact Lori Schuh at lschuh@xaviercatholicschools.org no later than Monday, 10/2.

3 News & Notes Page 3 DRIVER S EDUCATION Driver's training is offered by Driver's Education of the Fox Cities for students attending Xavier High School. The classroom sessions run two hours a day for 15 days, Monday thru Friday from 3:45-5:45 p.m. in a room designated by the high school office (Room 132 at this time). (Adjustments will be made to fit scheduled days off and half days, etc.) Sign-up packets with forms for parents can be obtained at the Counseling Suite from Mrs. Breuninger. The dates for the classroom sessions are as follows: Session #1 Oct. 30-Nov. 20, 2017 Session #2 Feb. 5 Feb. 23, 2018 Session #3 Apr. 23 May 14, 2018 If you have any questions, please contact Driver's Education at ACT Fee Waiver available. Families are reminded that ACT.org does allow students who qualify to receive up to 2 waivers for taking the ACT test. If you believe your family might qualify, please connect with your child s counselor or have your student stop in the Counseling Suite to find out more details. Real World Experiences in Health Care Students interested in finding out more about possible careers in health care should consider engaging in a High School Experience through the Fox Valley Health Care Alliance (FVHCA). The alliance is a grouping of local medical facilities and hospitals who have joined to allow high school students to gain exposure to and gather factual information regarding health care professions, opportunities and college or training programs that may aid in making decisions about potential careers. These experiences are three hour, interactive events for high school students in the FVHCA service area to learn about various healthcare careers. Students will rotate in small groups through three different career areas and are provided a packet of information at the end. Students interested in job shadowing with a specific career or becoming involved in Medical Mentoring in late winter must complete a high school experience through FVCHA first. Interested students should visit the fvcha.org website to register for this experience. Opportunities do fill up so if this sound like something you would like to participate in, please register soon. Fall opportunities are listed with more events in spring being added soon. See your counselor with more questions. Math League All students that enjoy math problem solving are invited to join the Xavier Math League team as we compete at the Fox Valley Math League meets one Monday evening a month throughout the school year. Students need to attend at least 3 meets, attend the practices approximately twice a month during x-period throughout the year and pay the $75 participation fee to be considered an active member. 4 Page 4 Xavier High School Xavier is Being Noticed!! We have a long standing history of having wonderful college representatives come through the Counseling Suite to visit with interested students. This year, we will host more than 30 representatives during the fall recruitment process to see our juniors and seniors. While college travel budgets are being cut for representatives, Xavier students continue to attract visits from colleges and universities near and far. 5 News & Notes Page 5 Boston Mrs. Hammen and Mrs. Schuh we recently able to attend the National Association of College Admission Counselor s national convention in Boston, MA. This conference is attended by over 7,000 high school counselors and college & university admissions representatives from throughout the US and many other region across the globe. They were able to attend sessions to learn more about how to help students create their college lists, admissions processes for fine arts, visual arts, music and dance, helping students write great college essays, college and mental health and admissions at colleges outside the US. Also as part of the conference, a huge college fair was held and they were able to talk with college representatives from around the world. Not only did they get to learn a lot about various schools, while in Boston, Mrs Hammen and Mrs Schuh made time to visit area colleges and universities where past and current students have applied. These visits were made to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard, Weslyan, Yale, Wellesley, Boston College and Boston University. It was an incredibly busy but informative trip and opportunities like these help to keep the counseling department up to date with the latest information so they can best assist our students. 7 News & Notes Page 7 Campus Ministry Campus Ministry is working on a number of things to help achieve our mission of building the Kingdom of God. Student, faculty and parent participation is crucial to the spiritual development of us all. Here is what we have going on in the month ahead: All School Liturgy: Our next all school Mass will be at 10:30 on Wednesday, October 18. We always invite parents to celebrate with us at St. Bernard Parish. We will also have our All Saints Day Mass (and light candles for All Souls Day) on Wednesday, November 1. Please join us at 10:30 at St. Bernard Parish. Rosary: We are praying the rosary in the chapel every Thursday during X period. All students, parents and faculty are invited to join in prayer. We will offer up any prayer requests received. Eucharistic Adoration: Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be on the first Friday of each month in the chapel from 7:30 am (after morning Mass) until 3:00 pm. We are still looking for adults to help us to cover all of the times during those days. Please contact Kelly Wilda in the Campus Ministry office ( ) or kwilda@xaviercatholicschools.org to sign up for a ½ hour or hour shift. Friday Mass: We will again offer Mass each Friday at 7:00 am in the chapel. We invite parents, grandparents and friends to join Fr. Adam, students and faculty each Friday morning. Youth Ministers Visit Xavier: On September 27, the area youth ministers were here to share the celebration of Mass and serve ice cream sundaes and meet with students during lunch. They let students know what is going on in their parishes and how they can get involved. Students are always encouraged to stop by their parish youth ministry office to visit and get involved! Campus Ministry Trips: Students are encouraged to attend any of the Campus Ministry trips and retreats throughout the school year. Quest retreat (freshmen and sophomores) will be offered October and April (cost: $60), Kairos retreat (juniors and seniors) will be offered Dec. 1-3 and March (cost: $140), March for Life Pilgrimage to Washington, DC will be offered January (cost: $500) and a summer mission trip (location still TBD) will be offered. For information about any of these trips or retreats, please contact Kelly Wilda in the Campus Ministry office. Fundraising opportunities are available for the March for Life and summer mission trip. We never want cost to be a reason someone cannot participate! Ethel Moehring Help Your Neighbor Day: On Friday, October 27, we will have classes in the morning and all of our students and faculty will be out in the community doing service in the afternoon. We are seeking adults to help with transporting small groups to the various service sites and supervising the students as they work. This is a fun day for the students and for the adults. We need a total of about 80 parent chaperones. If you are interested in helping, please contact Kelly Wilda at or kwilda@xaviercatholicschools.org or at the following link: All chaperones must have completed the VIRTUS training before November 4. Your help is greatly appreciated! Without you, HYND wouldn t be possible! Pray for sun!! Senior Retreat: Senior students and parents make sure to mark your calendar for Sunday, February 11. This is the day for the senior retreat we encourage the parents to be part of this special day and we normally have close to 100% participation from the parents. The retreat will begin at 1:00 and conclude with Mass at 4:15 p,. All seniors are required to attend so don t make any plans for Sunday, February 11. Christian Service: Please be sure to check the getnolved.org website to monitor your child s service hour progress. As a reminder, all hours are now being recorded via the site. As a reminder to the current seniors, your junior service projects must be completed and submitted no later than Thursday, January 18, Weekly Mass St. Francis Xavier Chapel Fridays at 7am Rosary The rosary will be prayed each Thursday during X period in the chapel. 8 Page 8 Xavier High School This is Not A Vacation Expedition Dominica: Study Abroad Who chooses to capture lizards using a noose, carefully pin beetles and insects to mounting boards, take water samples 12 feet below the surface in wave surge, weigh small gray bats after 11 p.m., wear chronically wet hiking boots, mass a hummingbird, swap scuba regulators with your buddy trusting he ll return yours, jump from a thirty foot canyon wall into a pool of crystal clear mountain water then rappel down even further into the canyon, climb a volcano in tropical temperatures to witness the sulfide gases escape into the atmosphere, hike daily in pouring rain, and sleep nose to feet with the other crazy people who made this choice? Eight Xavier students and one extremely impressed science teacher made this choice and came away with a new level of confidence in themselves as field biologists and as adventurers. The students were embedded for two full weeks in biodiversity research studies on Dominica, known to many as The Nature Island to collect data for on-going species and quality studies. The results of the studies will be used by The Museum of Natural History in London, several UK and Canadian universities, and the Dominican Government itself. The students were used as research assistants by visiting researchers daily, given both taxonomic and field surveying technique training, and off into the tropical rain forest or out to the coral reef they would go. I tagged along watching them dig in, ask questions, and do some incredible fieldwork. Their questions developed in synchronicity with their self-confidence do this kind of work under these conditions. The students will tell you there s a reason it s called a tropical rain forest. But after a week and all the data that these students collected, they knew exactly why Dominica is called The Nature Island and that they were a part of something much bigger. The final week was spent on the coast at Fort Shirley, a marine site saddled between two volcanic outcroppings, experiencing Dominica below the waves and attaining their scuba certification. On our journey to our new marine home, we sited and listened to a mother and calf sperm whale relaxing and catching a breath on the surface. The challenges for our land-adapted animals to adjust to functioning under the sea plagued everyone in different ways: pressure equalizing, buoyancy, descending to 30 m depths, hydration, fatigue and relying on a buddy were among the many requisite skills. Each student gained confidence along with each safety, communication, and equipment skill mastered to feel relaxed enough enjoy the world beneath the waves. Huge barrel sponges, moray eels, lionfish, sea slugs, fan corals, barracuda, manta rays, flounders, groupers, parrot fish, angel fish, tangs, wrasses, brain corals, octopus, yellow fin tuna, Christmas tree worms, and anemones are just a small sample of the diversity the Dominica reef had on display for these curious young scientists. Because of the ruggedness of the coastline, Dominica is not a highly frequented tourist destination; consequently the reef is pristine. Having returned to the creature comforts of home, I still find myself thinking about all the amazing experiences these students had, each risking a little bit of themselves physically, academically, and emotionally to bring the best souvenirs back: a true appreciation of the bounty and the beauty of a pristine tropical ecosystem and an expanded level of self confidence to take on an adventure. They will all tell you: this is not a vacation, this was an adventure of a lifetime! I would love to share this experience with your student. I m very excited to begin working with you all and believe we ve a great year in store for us. Please feel free to contact me if you ve ever any questions. BIG UPCOMING EVENTS Friday, September 29 th - HOMECOMING 7:00pm Field show performance MUSICIAN/ATHLETES, PLEASE NOTE - All marching band practices and performances are scheduled around athletic events and practices as much as possible, both in the summer and throughout the year. Occasionally there are unavoidable scheduling conflicts and I am always happy to communicate with the coach of any fall sport and with our athletic director to work out a compromise. We have achieved a record number of students in orchestra this year. It is promising to be a great year, and we are pleased to announce we have seventeen new students in orchestra this year! Fifteen new freshman, Katrina Baer, Alexa Bassett -Heitzmann, Kate Dupont, Tessa Schreiter, Lauren Sorebo, Isabella Taleon, Anna Teerlinck, Elizabeth Tovar-Eugenio, Aidan Wallace, Michael Jensen, Lalis Villagomez, Callie Rohm, Sophia Wittmann, Amber Sullivan, Adelyn Carney and sophomores Litao Li and Ji Won Hwang as new members this year. The students are already stepping up to the challenge and learning a lot of new music. Keep up the good work and we will have a wonderful year! Strings for hire! We will be going on tour to visit St. John in Little Chute, St. Nicolas in Freedom and St. Ignatius in Kaukauna. Last year, our visits were so successful, St. John in Little Chute has hired a full time teacher to start a string program. Morgan Voissem, Katie Czaplweski and Gillian Ulrich (8 th grader) visited the school to demonstrate their instruments. We are so excited to be a part of starting their program. 12 Page 12 Xavier High School Xavier Children s Theatre and Xavier Key Club We would like to invite families with children ages pre-school through eighth grade to a fun Halloween event on Friday, October 20th. Come in costume to the Halloween party presented by the Xavier Key Club, beginning at 5:30 pm in the Xavier High School commons. There will be games, face painting, candy and a Haunted House. Admission to the party and games is free with a non-perishable food item. At 7:00 pm, a public performance of Legend of Sleepy Hollow, will be presented by Xavier Children s Theatre in the Xavier Fine Arts Theatre. Families will love this adaptation of the Washington Irving story presented with all the thrills, chills and laughs that keep young audiences on the edge of their seats. Tickets for the performance are priced at $6.00 for adults and $5.00 for children 8 th grade and under. The box office is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from noon until 3:00 pm and one hour before the performance for phone and walkup sales. You are welcome to leave a message at any time. 14 News & Notes Page 14 Athletic News Athletic Fees Athletic fees are $140 per sport. Do NOT send a separate check the fee will be added to your financial statement once teams are selected. Season Tickets Adult season tickets are available for the school year. The tickets are $60 for 20 admissions to any home football, volleyball, basketball, and/or wrestling events. They are available in the business office and will be sold at all home games where admission is charged. Free On-Line Courses from WIAA Parents are encouraged to take advantage of several different free on-line courses offered by our state association, the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA). Access the web site at Scroll to the bottom and under Coaches, click on NFHS Courses. Then click on the word COURSES at the top. You will find several free course options. Xavier Calendar: An on-line calendar is utilized for ALL Xavier sports teams, events and schedules. That calendar also includes all school events plus all events utilizing school facilities. Access the calendar through the school web site Click on Athletics in the Menu, and then High School. Scroll down to Xavier Sports Schedules & Calendar of Events. There you will find access to the calendar of events. Attention Parents! We have a concern regarding the number of young children who attend our home games and seem to be unsupervised. Many of them are playing roughly, running, jumping, climbing, chasing, etc. Our concern is for their safety as well as for the safety of those with whom they could collide. All of our game workers are volunteers. They should not be expected to also babysit in addition to taking tickets or selling concessions. So, we ask that all children attending our games be accompanied by and supervised by an adult. 15 Page 15 Xavier High School Honor Society The Xavier Honor Society seeks to recognize students for excellence in their academic achievements, their contributions to the school community and their service to others. The Xavier Honor Society provides countless hours of free tutoring services at the high school level and throughout the St. Francis Xavier School System. Forms will be available in late January, due in February, and membership will be confirmed by April. Students are not eligible to join the Xavier Honor Society if they have received consequences for disrespectful conduct in class, intellectual dishonesty, serious infractions of school rules, or have violated the law. The Xavier Honor Society is for those students who have exemplified The Xavier Way in their actions and words. New members are expected to increase their responsibilities and leadership within our school. Seniors who are members for the first time must complete a minimum of five hours of Honor Society sanctioned service prior to being eligible to receive a gold cord for graduation. Students who previously applied and are current members of Xavier Honor Society must have completed a minimum of 10 hours of service for Honor Society projects/ tutoring prior to the February application due date in order to have their membership renewed. Additionally, they may not have been disciplined for disrespectful conduct in class, intellectual dishonesty or serious infractions of school rules nor can they have any law violations.
