October is National Pumpkin Month! Apple Pumpkin Muffins 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2 cups sugar 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 eggs 1 cup canned or cooked pumpkin 1/2 cup vegetable oil 2 cups finely chopped peeled apples STREUSEL: 1/4 cup sugar 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 4 teaspoons cold butter or margarine 1. In a bowl, combine the first five ingredients. In another bowl, combine the eggs, pumpkin and oil; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened. Fold in apples. Fill paper-lined muffin cups two-thirds full. In a small bowl, combine sugar, flour and cinnamon. Cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over batter. 2. Bake at 350 degrees for minutes or until golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks.

Have you been cautiously curious but haven t taken any action to get involved? Here s your chance to join the stimulating fun in a non-threatening environment. Check-out the Books the-other Channel book discussion group. Any one is welcome to attend. You may attend a particular session if the book is of special interest to you or you can attend as often as you like. We have chosen the books to read for the coming year and people to facilitate them. The schedule of choices is on our website or can be picked up at the library. When you attend a discussion, it s your choice as to the level of your participation. You may sit back and enjoy the interchange or you can jump right in with your thoughts and opinions. All are welcome. Oh, and did we mention, we don t just have an appetite for books, but treats are always served. We generally meet the fourth Tuesday of the month. We do vary that a bit though around holidays. We meet in the lower level of the Demmer Library at 6:30 and are usually talked out by 8:00, although social talk can last as long as you like. 4 The Library Page Page 4 of 8 Thanks to everyone who participated in the 1 st Three Lakes E-Recycling Event! This successful event prevented more than 700 electronics items from being disposed of in the landfill. First Choice Computer Recycling LLC, with the help of volunteers from the Three Lakes Lions Club, collected 144 computer monitors, 106 CPU s, 90 printers, 97 keyboards, 6 scanners, 12 fax machines, 6 typewriters, 2 LCD s, 17 laptops, 79 t.v. s, 11 microwaves, 2 refrigerators, 1 washer and many other miscellaneous items, despite the heavy rainfall on the August 27 th collection day. Due to the overwhelming response of the community at the E- recycling event we hope to have another E-Recycling event in June Look for details in upcoming newsletters. A special thanks to the Three Lakes Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Three Lakes for their assistance in coordinating this successful e-recycling event! 5 The Library Page How to Suspend an Item Request Page 5 of 8 Did you know that you can suspend your hold requests while you are gone on vacation? For example: if you have some books on request and realize that you will be out of town you can suspend your requests to ensure the books don t arrive while you are out of town. Just follow these simple instructions: 1. From our web page click on your account from the left hand column. 2. Enter the barcode (from your library card) and your four digit PIN and click on Log-In. 3. Click on Hold Requests 4. Click on the box next to your requested item to select the item you wish to suspend 5. From the drop down menu choose the date on which you would like your request to resume 6. Select change status and then log off your account. 7. Please call the library at , if you need further assistance. Check-out Great Books Discussion Group of the Northwoods! Great Books meets Thursdays from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the Three Lakes high school boardroom, located near the entrance by the flagpole. Contact Mary Ann McCloskey for more information Support the Demmer Library as a Friend! Join the Friends of the Library in supporting the library. The annual membership dues are only $10. The Friends help the library by holding monthly book sales, bi-annual bake sales and assisting the Three Lakes Public Library Foundation with the Spring Fling fundraiser. The Friends meet in the lower level of the library on the first Monday of each month at 11:30 a.m. to sort books, eat a sack lunch at noon, and conduct a short business meeting at 12:30 p.m. Don t forget our Saturday book sales on the fourth Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Come celebrate the silliness on: Friday, October 16 th 3:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. Demmer Library lower level OCTOBER IS FAMILY HISTORY MONTH Trivia Games Prizes The Three Lakes Demmer Library, along with the Three Lakes Genealogical Society, is jumping into the spirit of Family History month with two special programs. The Society has started one-on-one sessions for anyone who has the slightest interest in family history research. Intended for those who may have thought about organizing their family history but just not sure how to get started, a member of the Society will set up a mutually acceptable time at the library to help people get started. For more information, call Nancy at the library at or Charlene Roberts at The second collaboration between the library and the Society will be a Lockin held at the library on Thursday, October 29 at 5:30 p.m. This after-hours session will be just for those who are interested in dedicated family history research. Members and those interested in family history research will have access to the library computers with the online genealogy programs available through the Wisconsin Valley Library Service, along with The Genealogy and Local History Room resources. Members will also be available to help others with their genealogy questions and brickwalls. Anyone interested in participating in the Lockin who is not a member of the Society should call Nancy at the library at to sign up.

7 The Library Page Page 7 of 8 Read Beyond Reality Demmer Library Celebrates Teen Read Week 2009 Demmer Library s 55-Word Short Story Contest Celebrate Teen Read Week during the entire month of October with a writing contest. This is meant to be a fun writing contest where you write Stories will be accepted at the Demmer Library October 1 st 30 th. All entries must have your name, phone number, and grade written on the back. One story per entrant. Stories will be displayed at the library during the month of November. All participants will receive a small prize for their effort. No judging will take place. If you have questions, please call the library at about anything you want. It must be a fictional story, not an essay or poetry. Your story must have 55 words no more, and no less. Keep in mind, a story contains a setting, character or characters, conflict, and resolution. Rules ~Open to Young Adults aged ~the title is not included in the word count ~contractions count as single words ~numbers count as words, either expressed as words or numerals ~initials count as words Save the Date!
