July / August 2016 Summer Time Don t you just love summer time?

Here at the Community Center we have many activities planned for July and August.

Boy what a challenge to build those layout strings! A new program this summer is "What's your Favorite Board Game?

Now that I've piqued your interest for a really fun summer, you can read all about the coming events in this issue of the Scoop. Ice Cream Social Thursday, July 21 1:30 p.m. What better way to enjoy the hot days of July than to visit the Springdale ice cream parlor sundae bar!

1 July / August 2016 Summer Time Don t you just love summer time? I love to spend a day in the park sitting by the lake people-watching, a weekend camping with the grandkids, or time at the Community Center pool enjoying a Thursday night adults only swim. Here at the Community Center we have many activities planned for July and August. Please join us for our annual Ice Cream Social with the sundae bar where you can build your favorite mountain of ice cream and toppings. We have an afternoon of dominoes planned. Boy what a challenge to build those layout strings! A new program this summer is "What's your Favorite Board Game?" We will play board games from our youth like Sorry, Yahtzee, Candy Land and Chutes & Ladders (a favorite of mine). I always seem to land on one of those really long chutes. Ice Cream Social Thursday, July 21 1:30 p.m. What better way to enjoy the hot days of July than to visit the Springdale ice cream parlor sundae bar! Top a big scoop of vanilla ice cream with some of your favorite toppings - cherries, strawberries, caramel, chocolate, pineapple, whipped cream and nuts. Appearing at the Springdale ice cream parlor, John Louis, on the Edge of Illusion Magician. John uses dazzling illusions, incredible juggling, hilarious comedy, live animals and audience participation to enthrall his viewers. Register by July 18 at the front desk or call Keen K9 Tuesday, July 12 7:00 p.m. Join us as the Canine division of the West Chester Police Department visit the Springdale amphitheater. These four-legged officers have incredible ability and strength to track and subdue suspects, including the capability to gain entry to places not always accessible for human officers. Their keen sense of smell makes it possible for them to locate even small amounts of well-hidden contraband. This demonstration is open to all ages and is bound to astound spectators. In case of inclement weather we will hold this program indoors. Register by July 10 at the front desk or call Dominoes Tuesday, July 26 1:00 p.m. There's going to be a fun-filled afternoon of Dominoes. We will be playing the old favorites like Mexican Train and Chicken Foot.We will also have a table that will offer new domino games like Concentration, Sniff, and One-Arm Joe. 2 Words from a Fitness Guru It s never too late to start. This applies to many things but today I m applying it to exercise. You see, as you grow older an active lifestyle becomes more important than ever. Exercise can even reverse some of the signs of aging. It can help boost energy, maintain your independence, and manage symptoms of illness or pain. Not only is it good for your body, but it s also good for your mind, mood, and memory. We could all use a boost in those areas. Now don t think that you have to start training for a marathon to see the benefits. A simple 20 minute walk on most days is a great start. Try an aqua aerobics class or take one of our FREE classes in the Fitness Studio. Go out and buy a pedometer and try to get 10,000 steps per day. If that s too high start at 5,000. If that s too high start at 2,500. The point is that you need to start somewhere. So get started today! You might think it s too late or you re too old or what s the point? Well, the truth is that adults who take up exercise later in life show greater physical and mental improvements than their younger counterparts. There won t be as much wear and tear on your body so you ll be able to start reaping the rewards quickly. Now that you re ready to start, the first step, as always, consult your physician before starting any exercise program. The next step is to see a member of our Fitness Team. We can show you how the different exercise machines work and make sure that you are using them properly. We can help design a program that fits your needs and help you with a schedule. We can recommend the fitness class or even show you exercises that you can do at home. If you have any questions or concerns, we re here to help with whatever fitness needs you have. The last step is to stick with it. You might get frustrated or have slower than expected results but remember the number one contributor to adding years to your life is exercise. Annual Goldfish Swim Saturday, August 13, 12:00 p.m. - Pool Gate opens at 11:45 a.m. Spring and Dale are back swimming in the waters of the Community Center pool! Who will catch Spring and Dale this year? Remember, no nets, buckets or help from Mom, Dad, Grandma or Grandpa! All fish must be caught by children under 12 years of age with their bare hands. 3 Know the 10 Signs Thursday, July 14 2:00 p.m. The Cincinnati Alzheimer s Association presents "Know the 10 Signs," a program identifying 10 signs that are key in recognizing common changes in you or a loved one that may help with early detection and diagnosis of Alzheimer s disease or dementia. Early detection is vital in providing the best opportunities for treatment, support and planning for the future. Join us to learn more. Shaun Davidson, Branch Manager at the Forest Park Library will be here with a bundle of information on what s happening at your local library. Grandparent programs, book clubs, and downloading to your electronic devices are just a few topics he will be speaking about. Shaun will help you rediscover your local modern library. For more information call End of Summer Luncheon Thursday, August 25 12:00 p.m. As the summer comes to a close, join us for a scrumptious luncheon with a menu of baked ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, tossed salad and dessert. The Golden Eagles will be entertaining. They are a group of retired gentlemen who came together over the love of singing and performing. Their soulful voices can take you back to the age of doo wop and delight you with the strains of country, rock and popular favorites. Tuesday, August 30 1:00 p.m. What a way to spend an afternoon, playing board games from our youth such as Sorry, Clue, Scrabble, Candy Land, Chutes & Ladders, Yahtzee, or Chinese Checkers. Register by August 26 at the front desk or call Active Aging Week September Active Aging is a relatively new term that has sprung up in the last decade or so. The National Seniors Council breaks it down into its simplest terms: it is a strategy to maximize the quality of life and well-being of seniors. Springdale Parks and Recreation has been a huge advocate of active aging. We offer numerous older adult programs, classes, luncheons and even have a Senior Lounge dedicated to those who are 62 and older. This year will be our third annual Active Aging Week. There are five days of scheduled programs including Brain Fitness and Walking Bingo. To round out the week, on Friday we host a social gathering for all participants with tasty treats and some interactive activities.
