1 January / February 2014 Happy New Year Everyone! We had a great 2013 here at the Springdale Community Center, and I hope 2014 will be even better. I want to thank all who took an ornament off our giving tree to help one of our Springdale families have a very Merry Christmas. We have some very generous members. Despite the weather delay, our Holiday Luncheon was a success, and we had a great time. I am already looking forward to next year's! I would also like to thank all of those that have donated coffee and tea items to the senior lounge. They are enjoyed by many seniors as they visit the Community Center. In the coming year, we will have some of the old favorites returning with our This & That programs, luncheons, Dominoes, Bunco, and of course, Bingo. I am planning on throwing in some new games, programs and maybe even a surprise or two! Thanks again for a successful 2013, 2014 is looking to be even better, Happy New Year to All! Bunco Returns Tuesday, January 28 2:00 p.m. The last Bunco Party was such a success we decided to do it again! Come ready to throw the dice, follow the balloons, and have a great time. 2 Words from a Fitness Guru Happy New Year! It s that time of the year when everyone makes resolutions to be a better person, quit smoking, and lose weight. Unfortunately, if you are like many of us, by February you find that you are sneaking cigarettes or maybe a few extra pieces of candy. Well this year is going to be different because we re going to do things differently. That s right, I said we. The holidays were not too kind to my waist band, so instead of trading my jeans in for sweatpants, I m going to set a resolution to lose a little weight. The first mistake people make with their goals is that they aim too big. Losing 50 lbs. or quitting smoking cold turkey are huge goals so let s make them more attainable. If you need to lose weight, aim for dropping 10% of your body weight first. If you need to stop smoking, get some help. There are a lot of products to help you quit. One of the best and cheapest in the long run is hypnosis. I know it sounds far-fetched, and even I didn t believe it at first, but I know many people who have tried it, and they are still not smoking after several years. Another way that your resolution can go off track is not being specific enough. Just saying, I want to learn knitting or I want to exercise more is not enough. Be specific. I am attending the Wednesday night knitting class for the next eight weeks. Or, I want to increase my walking from Tuesday and Thursday to include Monday and Friday for 30 minutes each day. Put it on your calendar and treat it like a doctor s appointment. That way you feel like you can t miss it. The third reason people fail is that if something isn t working, they just quit everything. Just because the nicotine patch didn t work, doesn t mean nicotine gum won t. Or if your workout routine isn t producing the results you want, let a Fitness Team member know, and we ll design a new program for you. Evaluate what is going well and what isn t and make the necessary changes to keep going. And when you ve done all you can and you ve seen good results, make sure to reward yourself. Take some of the money you saved by quitting smoking and put it towards a nice dinner out. Or when you ve lost enough weight, buy a new pair of jeans and get rid of the old pairs for a little extra motivation! Hopefully with a few of these changes we ll soon be celebrating a Happy New You!
