9 Did You Know? Where Does the Money from the Popcorn Sale Go? - Breakdown of Popcorn Revenue Trail s End (cost of product) 30% Unit Commission 28% Prizes to Scouts 5% Total to units 33% Council cost of sale 2% Commission to Circle Ten Council 35% Selling popcorn teaches Scouts the value of earning his own way, builds self-confidence, and allows him to earn advancements and merit badges. Generally, people aren t buying the popcorn; they are paying to support your Scouting program. Have your Scouts focus on this aspect in their ask and you will find sales will increase. The average Scout sales total within the Circle Ten Council is $367. If all of your Scouts sold the average amount, what activities could your unit afford? Research shows that less than 20% of households nationally have been contacted by a Scout to purchase popcorn. There are a lot of potential customers out there to support your unit. Scouts who sell at least $2,500 (online, face-to-face or combination) in any calendar year receive 6% of their total sales invested in their own college scholarship account. That is $0.06 of every dollar they sell! Once Scouts are enrolled, 6% of their sales each year will be added to their account. Scouts only have to hit the $2,500 minimum one time. Online sales count! Scouts earn incentives based upon their sales. Every Scout who sells earns a patch, with various prize options available as the sales total increases. Top council and district salesmen will earn items such as suites at local sporting events. If you want to increase your unit sales, set goals. The average sales were 170% higher among Scouts who set a sales goal and 89% higher among units who set a sales goal. In addition to funding your unit s program, the popcorn sale supports Scouting in Circle Ten Council through the following: Circle Ten Council Scouts use our four camps at no cost year-round Camp improvements - more than $1 million in improvements have been funded by popcorn sales over the past three years ScoutReach, Circle Ten Council s scholarship program, provides $3 million annually to support over 9,200 youth - popcorn sales help make this program possible Rank advancements are provided at no cost to all Scouts in the Circle Ten Council family Liability insurance for adult volunteers and secondary insurance for Scout families is provided Many other benefits

High Adventure treks are a great way to keep older Scouts active in your unit. CAMPING NEWS CALLING ALL SHOOTING SPORTS ENTHUSIASTS! With the popularity of Shooting Sports in all aspects of Scouting, the need for trained and qualified Range Safety Officers (RSO) and NRA instructors continues to grow. The council has been putting on the various NRA instructors (Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun) for a number of years now. Up until recently it was easy and inexpensive for someone with any Instructor certification to get his/her RSO certification. Changes at the NRA have made this old process no longer an option. Now you have to either take their online course or take a publicly available course, both of which are considerably more expensive than the previous method. As the units, districts and council have an ever increasing need for Certified RSOs, Circle Ten Council now offers a NRA Range Safety Officer course as well as the NRA Instructor courses previously offered. We have two RSO courses scheduled for this year. The first class is July 19th, and the second class is Nov 15th. Both classes will be held at Camp Wisdom. For more information about the classes please visit

17 National Youth Leadership Training is an intense, 5½ day, outdoor leadership training experience for youth troop, team, and crew leaders. The course goal is to prepare young men and women to become superior leaders in their troop, crew, district, council, and other organizations they belong to now, and in the future. Participants learn to use current corporate leadership skills within the framework of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. BSA National carefully developed the NYLT curriculum with input from current corporate trainers, the United States Air Force Academy, and others in the training community. When regional pilot courses of NYLT were completed, Wood Badge for the 21st Century (advanced adult leadership training), was aligned to the NYLT Course Syllabus. Graduates of this program become senior leadership in their troop, team, crew as well as leaders in their Schools, Churches, and Communities. The course is led and taught by some of the best youth leaders in the Council; all of whom are graduates of the NYLT program and typically have staffed multiple courses. The adult advisors who assist the Youth Staff are Wood Badge-trained with extensive experience in training programs. The National Council has called the program a youth training continuum, to emphasize how all the parts of leadership training fit together. Our youth leaders deserve the best training program available. Across the nation, National Youth Leadership Training brings together in one dynamic course the youth leaders for Boy Scout troops and Venturing crews and ships. These youth leaders will benefit greatly from the NYLT experience, as will the Scouts they serve.

35 TRINITY WOODS continued Roundtable Themes The district is in need of persons to help plan and carry out Roundtable. We now have the meeting space to accommodate Boy Scout and Cub Scout Roundtables as well as the Order of the Arrow Chapter in three separate rooms. Roundtable is one of the aspects of training for unit leaders. If you are excited about Scouting and if you are interested in helping out all the units in the district, please contact Sheri Robson at or Frank Griffin at COWBOY UP!! We wanna be a cowboy in the Trinity Woods so we ve decided to COWBOY UP! At our Fall Cub O Ree/Family Campout. The event promises to be a root n, toot n, and shoot n good time for all, so don t miss out on the fun. We would like to see every Cub Scout there with family having a great time. Contact Laura Eggleston (leggleston@gmail. com) or Frank Griffin (frank.griffin@scouting.org) for more information. June was an interesting month both for weather and fun in the Trinity Woods District. We had our Twilight Camp at the Benedictine Monastery of Thien Tam in Kerens, TX and many of our troops headed off to Summer Camp. POPCORN, POPCORN, POPCORN The Popcorn sale is just around the corner with our Kickoff on September 20th at the Trinidad Middle School. That is also the final day for any Show and Sell Orders to be submitted. Check the council website under Popcorn for more details or Manuela Taylor (manuelataylor76@gmail.com) or Frank Griffin (frank. griffin@scouting.org) for details. Remember that with a properly applied plan your unit could earn $ per Scout selling in 4 hours. Just imagine what that could do for your program. A Boy Scout could pay his own way for summer camp or for half of Philmont in 3 four hour days or a Trip to the OA in just a few more days. A Cub could pay for Twilight camp in 2 hours and then help defray pack expenses, buy a new Pinewood Derby track, or even something bigger. It all starts with planning your ideal year of Scouting and your packs, troops or crews limitless imagination. What do you really want to do! Where do you really want to go? Don t settle for what can we afford when with a little effort we can go and do what we dream of. TRAINING, TRAINING, TRAINING Take a look at the dates, there is a little bit of Training for almost everyone. We have Cub Leader Specific Training, BALOO and IOLS coming up in September and more Cub Leaders Specific Training in October. Check above for the dates, times, locations, etc We still need qualified persons to be unit commissioners to help make sure we have phenomenal program and retention in all our units. Please contact Sheri Robson with any leads on Scouters from the past who are in the community that you feel would be a good commissioner. Again contact Greg Ryan at srobson@mycvc.net with any names for unit commissioners or roundtable commissioners (including your own). We would like to have your as well so if you think we don t have it yet, Frank just to say hi and he will add it to the list at frank.griffin@scouting.org, and to go to the Council s web page and submit your there to make sure you get the Council newsletter and any important news and announcements. We still need each unit to have a blurb each month about the cool things that are happening with each unit and desperately need someone besides the District Executive to write our newsletter. (Seriously have you read this stuff)? We want our articles to be like the rest of Scouting, volunteer driven. Any units wishing to be in next month s newsletter should forward article to Frank Griffin, District Executive until we can get someone else to journal the adventures of our district. To quote John Copley, our Council Commissioner more youth staying longer should be our goal as Scouters in the district. Let s get through re-charter this month with no late ones. Please contact Sheri Robson or Frank Griffin if you have any questions. It is an exciting time in the Trinity Woods District. Keep your eyes on us and watch us grow.
