1 Introduction Camp Powhatan prides itself on offering both basic and advanced trainings for our adult leaders. Throughout the week, many sessions are offered that will allow new leaders to become fully trained, allow relatively experienced leaders to learn more, and encourage your unit s most experienced adults to expand their knowledge and skills in order to deliver the best program possible for your unit back home. With the philosophy that summer camp is an excellent opportunity for adult training, we are proud to offer a diverse curriculum. Most of our training requires your unit s leaders to show up, listen, and participate (at no cost), but pre-registration for some of our more advanced courses is highly encouraged so that training materials may be ordered. This guide will give your unit leadership an understanding of the courses offered this summer as well as the form necessary to register for classes that require it. Courses Requiring Pre-Registration Below are the courses that we ask your unit leaders to pre-register for if interested. The preregistration form for each leader can be found on page 6. This form and payment should be sent to the Blue Ridge Mountains Council before June 1. Days and Times for trainings are based on past summers and are subject to change. Sign up at camp with the Waterfront Director. CPR Professional Certification Training may be available at camp, please bring $30 in case we have an instructor available. 3 Adult Leader Programs In addition to the trainings offered to adult leaders, several recreational and informative programs may be provided throughout your unit s week at camp. These include: Hillbilly Golf (build your own golf club) Scoutmaster Service Project Scoutcraft s Culinary Cook-off Scoutmaster vs. Staff Volleyball Reservation Tour (3 hour tour of Camp Ottari and Claytor Lake Aquatics Base) Sustainability and Conservation on the Reservation Advanced Courses Below are descriptions of the more advanced courses offered at Camp Powhatan. These courses are those that require payment and pre-registration in order to allow camp staff to properly plan for each course. CPR/AED and First Aid Basic from the American Red Cross This course follows the most current syllabus created by the American Red Cross and will allow leaders to leave camp with a two-year certification that will be useful for Scouting trips, or in the personal and professional lives of your adult leaders. This is perhaps our most popular course, so please preregister to help us plan for your week at camp. We want you to come away with the best training possible from a certified Red Cross instructor, and the price is a great deal for this level of training. Wilderness and Remote First Aid This advanced first aid course is required for at least one leader taking a contingent to any of the BSA s high adventure bases. The course will meet daily from 9am to noon and space is limited to 14 participants per week in order to ensure the best training possible. Scoutmaster Program Guide 2018 Page 3

Burns 8. Bone and Joint Injuries 9. Wounds and Wound Infection Those going through the course must arrive at camp with a current and valid CPR/AED certification or should register for the CPR/AED basic course offered at camp (an additional $30). Fundamentals of Training The first part of a new three-part system offered by the BSA to introduce scouting leaders to teaching techniques and skills. The course uses team-based learning to form small groups that work together to receive feedback from each other and the instructor. Upon completion of Fundamentals of Training, leaders will feel more confident and better equipped to deliver trainings to other adult leaders and to teach scouts in any necessary capacity. There is no cost associated with this course, but a limited number of spots are available each week, so pre-registration is required. This course is recommended for all leaders, but is especially pertinent to new leaders who are looking to improve their ability to teach scouts and train youth leaders and to adults who are interested in becoming trainers. 5 Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills The Blue Ridge Mountain Council invites you to participate in Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS). This course is a fun-filled program of hands-on training designed to help you master basic camp skills required for Tenderfoot to First Class. We highly recommend that leaders new to scouting consider this course. The fee of $40 includes your $30 CPR/AED and First Aid Basic certification from the Red Cross. Instructors will help participants master the basic outdoor skills of Scouting and certify participants in Red Cross CPR/First Aid. IOLS is designed to increase your comfort level and give you confidence as a trained, skilled leader. The program will also give you the opportunity to work with other Scout leaders from across the country. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Tentative Course Schedule 9:30 11:00 am Introduction, knots and rope skills, and flags 2:00 5:00 pm Red Cross CPR 7:00 8:30 pm First Aid Evening Hike (not an overnighter) Wilderness first aid, campsite selection, hiking and packing, and food preparation 9:30 11:15 am Wood tools, Trek Safely, and conclusion The Hike: The backcountry portion of the training will give firsthand experience in practicing the skills acquired in IOLS. We will be hiking on the beautiful trails of the Reservation, and we have chosen a trail that is not particularly strenuous, and that offers all trainees the opportunity to see the peaceful and absolutely beautiful parts of our property. The hike will be required for you to complete the training, so please consider that when signing up, and bring a daypack to carry water and raingear. Scoutmaster Program Guide 2018 Page 5
