For everyone that has been on the boards and the many volunteers thank-you. It has been a very trying year with weather and the other problems that come with any organization. This upcoming year will be no different. As you may be aware our fraternity is in a financial situation that only all of our members can help. Our goal as moose members is to provide for our children at Mooseheart and our seniors at Moosehaven. This can only be done by sponsoring new and former members. As you will read in the Informer, Moose International is raising the men's and women's per capita starting in September. It will be necessary for us to ask our members to increase our dues, not only is our lodge doing this, but many others. We are also planning to have more functions, which not only will increase our income, but also give our members more to enjoy. We will need help from all of you in the way of volunteers. Remember a burden heavy to one, is bourn lightly by many. Please post your calendar on your fridge, so that you won't miss the upcoming events. Again on our meals please call in as many days in advance so that we may be prepared for a crowd. Your administrator Ralph (Buck) Cobb "GIMME FIVE" -- What Is It? Nothing More, or Less, Than A Simple Plan to Help Ensure The Future of Mooseheart and Moosehaven Five cents -- set aside from the change you pour into your pocket or purse in the morning. Five more cents -- set aside from the change you empty from your pocket or purse in the evening. Just that: a nickel in the morning, a nickel in the evening, set aside and sent to Moose Charities, for the kids of Mooseheart and the seniors of Moosehaven. That's the new "GIMME FIVE" program -- it's really nothing more than that. But it's also nothing less than this: If anything close to the entire membership of the Loyal Order of Moose and Women of the Moose were to do just that much... every day... for five years... it could ensure the financial future of Mooseheart Child City & School in Illinois, and of our Moosehaven retirement community in Florida -- without having to keep coming to Moose members every year to ask for more. How can this be? Remember the wisdom of our Enrollment Ritual: "A burden heavy to one is borne lightly by many." Then, do the math: We honestly believe that very, very few of our nearly 1.3 million Moose men and women would find it a hardship to set aside a nickel in the morning, and a nickel at night, for Mooseheart and Moosehaven. But let's be conservative and say that only 1 million can or will do so. For each of those caring members, then:five cents in the morning, five cents in the evening is ten cents a day -- or $36.50 a year. That amount multiplied by 1 million members...is $36.5 million per year. After five years, by the end of 2012, that could be $182.5 million -- before accumulating investment interest is added in. All from five cents in the morning, and five cents in the evening. It's that simple -- but participating in "Gimme Five" can be even simpler: Instead of trying to remember to physically set aside a nickel in the morning and a nickel in the evening from now through 2012, you can Mail Moose Charities a check for your annual "Gimme Five" contribution of $36.50, or all five years at once for $182.50, to Moose Charities, 155 S. International Dr., Mooseheart, IL (Any questions, please phone Moose Charities at ) -- Make a secure online Gimme Five donation at -- Visit the Gimme Five Direct-Debit Plan webpage at As you do, know that all contributions to the Gimme Five Program are KEPT SEPARATE from any other donations -- ensuring that they are not used for any other purpose. And because Moose Charities is registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 charity, YOUR ENTIRE CONTRIBUTION IS 100% TAX- DEDUCTIBLE. If EVERY Moose participates in the Gimme Five program, we can reach a goal for which our fraternity has struggled for more than 90 years -- financial security for Mooseheart and Moosehaven. We have expressed our pride in these two great Moose humanitarian creations for decades -- and our members have told us, loudly and clearly, that they want to keep these two campuses healthy and operating well into the future. Well, the GIMME FIVE program can make that happen -- but only if we ALL participate! Let's make it happen -- together! Sincere fraternal regards, MOOSE INTERNATIONAL William B. Airey, Director General/Chief Executive Officer Leonard J. Solfa Jr., Chief Operating Officer

6 PAGE 6 HARVARD MOOSE FAMILY CENTER NEWS May/June 2008 Who would have thought time would fly like this? It seemed like a few weeks ago I was getting installed and giving you a pep rally speech about having fun. If anything was accomplished during my term it was about having fun and changing things up. We made several appearances in the local parades. We tried new meeting set ups, we went from a ritual to no ritual to yes, its true a new ritual this week. Our meetings were cut short and changed several times due to the "wonderful" weather we had. I certainly tried to keep you on your toes. WOTM Chapter 500 Officers In all I want to thank you all for having the faith in me to lead you this past year. I hope you all had fun. I know I did and I couldn't have done it without you. I want to thank everyone who helped out whenever needed. When I didn't have the faith to continue on, it was your kind words of encouragement that kept me going. I thank you for supporting my decisions even if you didn't agree. In the end, we all worked together. Let me tell you, it was quite the experience being your Sr Regent. Sr Regent Jr, Grad Regent Jr. Regent Recorder Chaplain Secy/Treasurer Erin Dowey Christian Nolan Joyce Hahn Barbara Ray Betty Garrett I'm looking forward to being on the board again for the term as your Jr Graduate Regent. We can't be a chapter without all of you. We must work together to achieve greatness. We have a wonderful lodge and need you to continue to make it a successful lodge. 7 PAGE 7 HARVARD MOOSE FAMILY CENTER NEWS May/June 2008 Message from Director General Airey and Grand Chancellor Fregulia On Per-Capita Assessment Increase Coming September 30 Recently, the Supreme Council of Moose International and the Grand Council of the Women of the Moose rendered a decision regarding increases in the annual per-capita assessment of the Women of the Moose, and the annual per-capita assessment of the Loyal Order of Moose (formerly known as the ABCD amount) amounts paid as a portion (NOT the entirety) of each member s dues. Decisions were reached based upon the following facts: As reported during the Orlando convention, the operating costs of Mooseheart Child City & School and the Moosehaven retirement community are running at approximately $32 million per year. Increased expenses of the two campuses have resulted in the fraternity needing to borrow funds from the Moose Foundation which includes Endowment Fund donations. The fraternity has fallen far short of keeping pace with inflation in the per-capita assessment amounts. The ABCD amount was initially set at $4.00 in 1929 ($1.00 per quarter therefore the reference to A Big Charity Dollar or ABCD.) And, according the U.S. Consumer Price Index, what could be purchased for $4.00 in 1929 cost $48.50 in The per-capita assessment of the Loyal Order of Moose has been raised just six times since 1929; the Women of the Moose per-capita has also been raised just six times since its inception in 1923 in none of those cases fully keeping pace with inflation. From the 1960s through 1980s, when total Moose membership increased 25 out of 30 years, the per-capita assessment generated by the growing number of members was sufficient to fund operations. But, from 1991 to 2007, the total number of dues-paying members increased only 3 times in 16 years, and the drop in available per-capita funds has meant that the inflation shortfall could not be made up to sufficiently fund operations of our children s and seniors campuses. Therefore, the decisions of the Supreme Council and Grand Council are as follows: As of member-renewals payable September 30, 2008, the Per-Capita Assessment for each member of the Women of the Moose will increase from its current $12 per year, to $20 per year. As of member-renewals payable September 30, 2008, the per-capita assessment, or ABCD amount, for each member of the Loyal Order of Moose, will rise from its current $16 per year, to $28 per year; then will increase a minimum of $2 each year for the next five years. We wish to stress that, while the officers of each Lodge and Chapter may respond to these per-capita increases by asking the Lodge and Chapter membership to approve increases in overall dues amounts such a decision rests entirely with the voting membership of the Lodge and Chapter. What the Supreme Council and Grand Council have done is ONLY to increase the per-capita amounts coming from each member s total dues amount. Special Meeting to be held on May 22, 2008 A special meeting for the men is being called of Harvard Family Center 1289 on May 22, 2008 immediately following the regular Lodge meeting. The regular meeting starts at 7:00 PM. The purpose of this meeting is for an increase of dues. This meeting is being called as per Section 26.7 of the General By-Laws. The only item to be discussed at the meeting will be the dues increase as purposed by the Board of Officers.
