Also attached is the monthly crime report for August 2018 compared to previous month, and August 2018 YTD comparison to same period of This week, one of the patrol vehicles was involved in an accident when a citizen ran a red light travelling eastbound through the intersection of S. Main Street and Wheatland Road. Fortunately, both the officer and the citizen received only minor injuries. The patrol unit is likely totaled, however it was scheduled to be replaced by a new unit expected in October. The first North Texas Law Enforcement Community Engagement Summit was held in Dallas on September 5, Crime Prevention and Community Relations Officer Doug Sisk attended. While Doug learned much of what was discussed is already being done by our department with regards to community engagement, he made valuable contacts with individuals from other agencies and organizations, as well as gained new ideas in how other departments engage citizens. Notes on recent successes: Night Patrol Officers using tracking technology, were alerted to a burglary of a vehicle at a local motel. When the sergeant tried to stop the vehicle believed to be involved, the driver refused to stop and fled in the Hollywood Park neighborhood. After a short vehicle pursuit, the occupant stopped and fled on foot. In a coordinated effort by several officers, the suspect was quickly apprehended, the stolen property recovered, and the vehicle in which the suspect initially fled, which had been reported stolen out of Dallas, was also recovered. 2 Page 2 of 11 Detectives, SWAT, and patrol officers worked together to raid an apartment which was being used to sell illicit drugs within the complex. Ten suspects were encountered with eight being jailed on various charges. Three pistols, marijuana, cocaine, crack and several thousands of dollars in cash were confiscated from the apartment. Fire Department The department responded to two house fires in the past week. A fire on Saturday, September 1 in the 1800 block of Blueridge Drive caused approximately $28,000 in damage. The second fire, in the 1900 block of Silver Creek Drive on Thursday, September 6, caused approximately $40,000 in damage. There have been no major EMS incidents. We received notification this week from Senator Eddie Bernice Johnson s office and Senator John Cornyn s office, that the department was awarded a $48,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security to purchase eight (8) handheld radios. These radios are P-25 compliant and will enable us to communicate on a broader range of radio channels when we respond to neighboring cities or statewide deployments. The grant covers $43,637 and the city matching share is $4,363. The application for the grant was previously approved by the City Council in March New applicant background packets are due Saturday, September 8. We have four applicants remaining on the current hiring list that will begin the screening and testing process once we have their packets. Public Works Water usage was MG the week of August 27 through September 2, down from MG the prior week. The daily peak water demand occurred on Monday, August 6, when MG was used. There was zero precipitation that week. Dallas County reported two positive mosquito traps for West Nile virus this week. Due to the inclement weather forecast, ground spraying was conducted on Wednesday, September 5 and Thursday, September 6, between the hours of 9:00p and 5:00a. The areas sprayed were generally the area east of Santa Fe Trail to the city limits, and south of E. Wheatland Road to the city limits. There is no Planning and Zoning Commission meeting scheduled for Monday, September 10, 2018 due to lack of agenda items. The Code Enforcement Monthly Report for August 2018 is attached. Of note is the emphasis on Illegal Open Storage, Junked Vehicles, Parking on Sidewalk or Unimproved Surface, and Vegetation Encroachment on Sidewalk or Curb for this month when compared to this time last year.

3 Page 3 of 11 Construction Update: A pre-construction meeting is scheduled for Friday, September 7 for the FY18 Sidewalk ADA Accessibility Program. The project is anticipated to begin construction within two weeks. The Concrete Construction Crew removed and replaced 334 square feet of sidewalk at Palm. They also completed the north trailhead at Lakeside Park and started work on the south trailhead. Uretek USA completed pavement lifting work along S. Cockrell Hill. Library Zen Hours at the Library debuted on Saturday, September 1 to many wonderful reviews. The low lighting and quieter atmosphere was praised by several patrons as they started their day at the library in a relaxed manner. Regular programming at the library resumed this first week of September with a bookmobile visit to the Children s Learning Academy and Childcare Network daycare centers. Children s Librarian Danene Hudson conducted storytimes at both locations and enjoyed the enthusiasm and excitement of the kids upon her return. The library is hosting a Recognition of Veterans event on Saturday, September 15. Sponsored by the Friends of the Duncanville Library, the event will honor veterans and explore the home front initiatives during WWII to support the war effort. Duncanville native Andy Fancher, who has conducted interviews with dozens of WWII veterans and posted their stories on YouTube, will be the featured speaker along with local veterans. Mr. Fancher has appeared on national television talking about his project preserving the stories of these brave Americans. Please see the attached event flyer.

Baseball season opens the following week. The Horticulture Crew addressed numerous tree rings in the downtown district that had been lifted by tree growth and roots causing potential tripping hazards. The Irrigation Crew repaired an irrigation main line leak near Ben Franklin in the downtown district. Fieldhouse: The Fieldhouse will host a Chamber of Commerce Fun After Five event on Thursday, September 20, 5:00p 7:00p. The Fun After Five is hosted once a month by various Chamber member businesses. This is a great opportunity for the Fieldhouse to showcase the improvements we have made to the facility, as well as highlight the offerings and available venue of the facility to local businesses. See the flyer attached. This coming week we have: o SMU Basketball Clinic Saturday, 10:00a to 1:00p; (4) courts o Point Guard College Basketball Camp Saturday, 1:00p to 8:00p, Sunday 9:00a to 4:00p; (6) courts o Fieldhouse Feeder League - Sunday 6:00p to 9:00p; (3) courts Recreation: The Recreation staff is busy marketing the September Concert Series and Boo Bash events and has provided information to Visit Dallas, Dallas Guide Live, FaceBook and additional online outlets. The Recreation Center has been inspired by the Library to paint scenic murals on the windows in the Recreation center. They will change out murals for different seasons. Cole Stottlemire, part-time Recreation staff, is our resident artist.

Brown, Jr., Chief of Police August 2018 Monthly Report DATE: September 06, 2018 During the month of August 2018, we had Use of Force Incidents 2 Incident 1: 08/09/2018 Suspect attempted to evade Duncanville Police Officers after being detained. Suspect resisted and fought Officers as he was being arrested. Incident took place in a parking lot and administrative review determined force used was lawful and within policy.
