1 Ashland Police Department April 2013 Monthly Report
2 INTRODUCTION The monthly report is intended to serve as an overview of the Ashland Police Department s effort to combat crime within the Town of Ashland. The report contains information about the number of criminal offenses during the month of April 2013 and the activities undertaken by the Police Department to improve the overall quality of life for the community. The information helps the Police Department develop strategies for providing a safe environment in which to live, work, visit and play. The information is also intended to keep the public and officials informed. For the month of April our officers made a total of 57 criminal arrests. The department handled 64 Group-A offenses, of which 43 thus far have been cleared which gives our department a monthly clearance rate of 67.2%. Our overall clearance rate for all crimes is 78.9%. 2
3 Activity Highlights Day Shift (12 Hour) Responded to 445 calls for service. Made 26 criminal arrests with 28 criminal charges. Completed 246 park, walk and talk activities. Completed 66 police reports. Issued 182 summonses. Completed 12 adopt-a-senior visits. Completed 35 bank checks. Completed 31 lunch buddy visits. Completed 735 community contacts Midnight Shift (12 Hour) Responded to 313 calls for service. Made 28 criminal arrests with 46 criminal charges. Made 8 DUI arrests. Completed 323 park, walk and talk activities. Completed 49 police reports. Issued 47 summons. Completed 1082 property checks. Completed 511 community contacts. Progress in the South Taylor, Arlington and Randolph Streets Corridor Officers handled 4 calls for service in this area, completed 95 park, walk and talk activities as well as 53 hours of traffic enforcement, observation and bike patrol time. Officers made 84 community contacts. P2B Program Patrol officer made personal contact with 14 business and 14 citizens of Ashland in an effort to address specific concerns that they might have. Crime prevention material was made available for local businesses. Community Policing April 11 th Attended TRIAD Meeting April 12 th Hoops, Cops & Kids basketball event at the YMCA April 20 th - Attended an Alzheimer's Fair to give a Project Lifesaver presentation. April 23 th Ashland Woods Neighborhood Watch April 27 th - National Drug Take Back Event April 27 th - Attended Patrick Henry Family YMCA - Children's Safety Fair Investigations Eleven cases were assigned this month. Two cases were determined to be unfounded, two were made inactive and three were closed. Investigators made an arrest on an embezzlement from the Ashland Little League. It was determined through the course of the investigation that the fiduciary had taken money from the league and one other non-profit organization converting it to their own personal use. 3
4 Training Lt Aronhalt and Sgt Jenks attended CIT training. Officer Gray attended firearms instructor training Officer Nuessle attended gang training hosted by the Richmond Police Department Bike Patrol Bike patrol officers rode 249 miles in the month of April. Highlights On April 3, 2013, an officer located two suspicious people smoking marijuana in a vehicle while on foot patrol at Days Inn. One person was arrested for possession of marijuana. On April 6, 2013, officers arrested subject for possession of marijuana and possession of a schedule II drug while attempting to serve a warrant. On April 12, 2013, an officer was on a foot patrol in the area of Ashland Woods. The officer located a suspicious situation at one of the townhouses which resulted on two arrests. One person was arrested for obstruction of justice for destroying evidence and another person was arrested for possession of marijuana. On April 13, 2013, an officer responded to Palm Leaf Motel for a noise complaint. While obtaining the information needed for the call he found two people smoking marijuana inside a room. Two people were arrested for possession of marijuana. On April 13, 2013, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation. While conducting an investigation into the infraction it was determined that the subject was driving on a suspended license for the 4 th offense. He was arrested and transported to PRJ. On April 14, 2013, an officer was patrolling in the area of Henry Street and Smith Street. He observed a vehicle attempting to parallel park which struck two other vehicles. The officer marked out and found the operator to be intoxicated. The operator was arrested for impaired driving and refusal of breath test. On April 16, 2013, officers arrested a subject for possession of marijuana and DUI at Kitty Hamilton Lane and Hill Carter Park Way. On April 18, 2013, an officer responded to a crash at route 1 near Success Street. On scene he observed a vehicle that struck a power pole. The driver was found to be intoxicated. The driver was arrested for impaired driving. On April 18, 2013, an officer was on a PWT at Motel 6. He observed a known wanted person was staying in one of the rooms. The wanted person was taken into custody without incident. On April 18, 2013, an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic offense. He found the driver to be intoxicated. The operator was arrested for impaired driving, possession of marijuana and open container. On April 20, 2013, officers arrested a subject for a noise violation that led to a DUI arrest of subject on Pleasant Street. On April 20, 2013 An Officer arrested a subject for possession of marijuana in the 300 block of Henry Clay Road as a result of a citizen complaint of a suspicious vehicle. On April 22, 2013, officers arrested subject for possession of marijuana at the Apple Garden Inn. 4
5 Highlights, continued, On April 27, 2013, an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic offense. The driver was given field sobriety tests and completed them successfully. While the driver was out of the vehicle the officer observed him attempt to hide marijuana. He was arrested for possession of marijuana and fictitious identification. On April 28, 2013, an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic offense. He found the driver to be intoxicated. He arrested the operator for impaired driving. On April 29, 2013, an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic offense. The officer was able to search the vehicle and found heroin. The driver was arrested for Possession of Heroin, Introducing Schedule. I/II Narcotics into Jail Facility, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, Possession of a Fictitious Drivers License, Driving on a Suspended License. The driver was also charged with numerous traffic infractions. A JOR was also completed on a juvenile occupant for possession of heroin. 30 Squad conducted a Traffic Safety Checkpoint at N Cottage Green Drive and England St. 5
