1 THE ICABOAST January 2017 Published Monthly Issue No. 232 News from the City of Ione The Ione City Council met on Tuesday, January 10 at 6 p.m, new mayor Rod Taylor was sworn into office. At this time there are 3 open council positions, please consider serving our city. You can submit a letter of interest or call City Hall at Ione Community Church Ione Community Church will hold its Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at which time we will also have the first reading of changes proposed to our constitution and by-laws. The community Senior Lunch will be held on Tuesday, January 24th at 11:30 a.m. at Ione Community Church. Calling all kids in Kindergarten through 5th Grade! Join us for J.a.M. ( Jesus and Me) each Wednesday after school beginning January 18th at 3:30pm at Ione Community Church. We will play games, learn Bible stories, make crafts and just generally have fun! If school is delayed or closed, the information is posted by 6:00 AM on: District Website Automated calling system Regional media outlets (newspaper online, radio, Portland & Tri-Cities tv stations) GRASS-FED BEEF FEATURED AT IONE MARKET Tasty, Healthful, Locally Grown. If no notice is posted, school is running on regular schedule. The location with the most accurate information to confirm a delay/closure is on the district website. On occasion, media inaccurately reports school delay/closure information. In the event that schools must close early, notification is given using the same method. If you have questions about the delay/closure policy, please call the District Office or your child s school. Thank you. Students Invited to Technology Expo in March Do you know a student interested in technology? Students across eastern Oregon are invited to the IMESD s annual STEP Technology Expo on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande. This event is FREE and open to all students currently enrolled in 8th through 12th grades who attend one of the IMESD s component school districts. This year s Expo is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at EOU. Transportation will be provided to students from their school district (details are currently being determined). The Expo is an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in hands-on technology fun and learn more about school-to-career opportunities in the technology field. Representatives from regional companies will attend to visit with students about jobs in their areas. 4 385 W. Second Street, Ione, OR The Ione Public Library has been awarded 101 new children s books through a grant from The Pilcrow Foundation, a national non-profit public charity. The Ione Topic Club raised funds for the 2-to-1 matching grant. The new books will be added to the library over the next few months. 5 Ione FFA Chapter Chapter News and Happenings Ione FFA and Booster Club are partnering to raffle off an apple watch donated by the Port of Morrow. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. Sales start at the Bonanza and the drawing will be February 11th during senior night. The Sage Center and Farmer s Ending Hunger have partnered with the Ione FFA Chapter! Metal art trees made in the high school shop (approx. 15 x 9 ) are for sale in the Sage Center gift shop. All proceeds benefit Farmers Ending Hunger. Chapter members will be attending the FFA District Convention in Hermiston on January 19th. The Greenhand Dessert will be held in the Ione School Cafeteria on January 25th at 6 p.m. Have something to sell? A service to offer? A news item for the ICABOAST? 6 Book Fair Proceeds to be Donated to Ione School and Preschool At their December 2016 meeting, the Ione Topic Club voted to split the $1,037 profit from the November Book Fair between the Ione Community School and Creative Care Preschool, so that each receive $ The money donated to the main school will be rounded up to $1,000 in order to fulfill a request from the Ione Middle/High School ASB for assistance in funding a guest speaker they are planning to have later this school year. The money for the Creative Care Preschool will be used as they see fit to keep their program running. Overall, the community purchased and donated 144 books to the classrooms and library from the teacher s individual wish lists. The Topic Club donated the remaining 22 books from those lists so that every classroom and the library had their wish list completed. This was the first year that the Book Fair was run by the Ione Topic Club. The group stepped up to take over the event after learning that Cathy Halvorsen, the school librarian, was looking to turn it over to someone else. Rather than see the school and community lose this great resource, the Ione Topic Club felt that taking it over was a natural fit for their group and their mission. A Note of Thanks Wheatland Insurance would like to thank everyone who donated to the Annual Food Drive. The Ione office won the Wheatland Food Collection Challenge, collecting a total of 413 pounds of food! Together the Ione and Heppner offices donated 762 pounds of food to the Neighborhood Center. Again, thank you, and hopefully Ione can make the 500 pound mark next year. A Message from the Ione Legion Word has been received that Conrad Tworek is no longer the contact person for requests to use the Legion Hall. After more years than he can remember, he has passed on that responsibility to Will DeBoer of Lexington. Will is now the keeper of the keys. He has been very eager to do what he can for the Legion. He is at home most days and usually in Ione three days a week. His home phone is and his cell number is Conrad is very grateful to the community for the courtesy and respect he has been shown in the past and asks that Will be given the same in the future.
