Here s a quick rundown on the events: Friday welcome party; Saturday Poker Run, Raft-up and/or Cove Picnic, Evening BBQ (bring your own grilling favorite) and pot-luck dinner; Sunday TBA. The details for the Poker Run are under development, but judging from past events, it will be fun for all and a true test of navigation skills for the boat skipper and crew. The Past Commanders BBQ was windy and cool and attendance was low by past events. Those who braved the weather enjoyed the fellowship and food. On our way home Sunday we experienced snow, sleet, hail, and rain. Thank you to all the past commanders who attended and supplied the food. Chris, you re finally done. This coming weekend was the AZGF Expo and the ExCom meeting on 12 April and the general membership meeting on 19 April followed by Katherine s Landing at Lake Mohave. At the spring council meeting in Laughlin the Squadron won several awards that I will bring to the General membership meeting on the 19 th. We are hosting the D/28 Spring Conference in 2013 and I need help and ideas to get this moving. If you are interested in helping, give me a call or so you can get involved. We are also in the planning stages of the safe boating celebration in May, and have a cooperative event with the Sportsman s Warehouse in June. All of the vessel inspectors, please put these events on your calendar. Details in other reports. On the education front SEO Ron McNeil, has an ABC class scheduled and great ideas for promoting these classes. JN has started and Joe/Ron have a full class of students with many members sharing teaching. See the SEO report for full details. Until next month, be safe and we ll see you on the water.

There s a year s worth of Pipes there in case you missed something earlier. Remember, there are two additional pages of photos in full color in the online edition of the publi- Check the squadron s web site for the latest schedule of public boating classes. They are conveniently located on both the east and west sides of the metropolitan area. And volunteer to proctor. You ll sharpen your boating skills with some very nice people. Executive Officer s Report Lt/C Dan Sheen, P The Katherine Landing trip is coming up on of April. More info is available online at the Phoenix USPS web site or in the Bos'n's Pipe. If you are thinking about going, please send me an and I'll include you on an distribution list for planning and coordination. For anyone who hasn't been there, it is a really neat outing and a chance to visit the Mohave Squadron. I hope we get a good turnout. Administrative Officer s Report By Lt/C Chuck Davis, P By the time you read this, the Squadron will have had our big weekend at the annual AZ Game and Fish Expo held the weekend of 3/31-4/1 and coordinated by Joe Warren. Thanks to all who helped with setup and manned our booth. This gives us our biggest and best public exposure of the year and will segue right into our ABC boating class in early April hopefully leading to new members. Speaking of new members, we had three this past month, so be on the lookout for new faces at Squadron activities and make them feel welcome by introducing yourself. Going on into April, the Executive Committee Meeting is scheduled for the 12th at the Paradise Valley Police Headquarters ( SE corner of 63rd St and Lincoln Dr.) This is always a great opportunity to see and join in the basic operation of your squadron and all members are welcome. Our general meeting will be held at Joe's Crab Shack(1606 W Baseline Rd, Tempe, AZ 85283) just off I-10 East of Baseline. The usual, drinks at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m., and meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. With program to follow. Next is the D/28 Katherine Landing Rendezvous on the south end of Lake Mohave just above the dam upriver from Laughlin, NV. It is scheduled for 4/20-4/22 and is being coordinated by Dan Sheen. This is a great annual event and a chance to meet some of the other district members on a fresh water setting. Our boating activities in April conclude with a raft-up on Lake Pleasant 4/28 ramrodded by David Allocco. Look for direct s on this as the month progresses. Both these late April activities are shaping up beautifully as our weather should be really coming into the summer boating season (sail boaters are excluded from this assessment as they seem to enjoy pain year round} so do plan on joining us as much as possible. With Thanks from the Editor The photos in this issue were voluntarily taken and supplied by a talented group of digital photographers including Joe

Safety Notes By P/C Roger Clark, AP (Editor s note: The following was taken from the January-February, 2012 issue of Small Craft Advisory, published by the National Association of Boating Law Administrators. Reports from two studies conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the effects of E15 on marine engines released in October show that the gasoline and ethanol blend can cause issues including drivability, material compatibility, increased emissions and long-term durability in outboard, stern drive and inboard engines. In addition to increased fuel consumption in two of the engines, the High Ethanol Fuel Endurance study showed that E15 caused damage to two out of three outboards and complete failure in the other engine, as well as degraded emissions performance outside of engine certification limits, according to the releases. The results of the study reinforced the industry s concerns about proper warning labeling at fueling stations. The Marine Manufacturers Association, along with the Engine Products Group, filed a suit challenging the rules regarding gas pump misuse controls for gas pumps containing up to 15 percent ethanol. According to the NMMA, the new rules would not do enough to prevent possible misfueling with E15 fuel, and petitioned to require E10 fuel to also be sold at gas stations. Current proposals by the ethanol industry to increase the amount of ethanol in gasoline should seriously concern all boaters and owners of other small-engine equipment. More can be found at Fuel Endurance test
5 Bos n s Pipe 5 April 2012 Educational Officer s Report By Lt/C Ron McNeil, AP I would first like to recognize the Phoenix Sail and Power Squadron members who have recently earned the Educational Proficiency Award. This award is given to individuals after completing a grade level of AP (Advanced Piloting) and three elective courses. The recipients include Larry Knowles, Danny Friend, Dan Rye, Chris Lockyer-Bratton and Mike Pavsek. Congratulations on your accomplishments and thank you for the inspiration you bring to the club. I also want to acknowledge and thank Joe Warren as past SEO and all the instructors that volunteer many hours to make these learning opportunities a reality. We currently have the JN (Junior Navigation) class going on. We have 6 students taking this class. As part of the class they will be taking a trip to San Diego in April to practice the skills they are learning by taking sighting of the sun while at sea. They will then apply all the needed mathematical adjustments and corrections to identify their line-of-position and ultimately establish a fix. Imagine being in the middle of the ocean with no electronics and being able to establish an accurate fix. In addition to these navigation skills this class covers many other important facets of blue water cruising. Anyone with interest even in coastal cruising should consider achieving this level of education. My advice is, don t wait until you purchase your dream boat and have it docked at Marina del Rey. The dream can start today. We also have an upcoming ABC public boating class starting on April 4 th. It is going to be held at Sportsman s Warehouse on Wednesday evenings 6:30 8:30 for four weeks. We really want to ask our members to look for opportunities to refer a friend or family member to take this course. This is an invaluable class for someone new to boating or even just thinking of buying a boat. As soon as someone buys a boat the first thing they want to do is get on the water and with no license required there is nothing stopping them. But as we all know there are so many things to learn and know about to insure a fun and safe outing. So if you know of someone like this please suggest that they take this or a similar class. Sportsman s Warehouse has been a unique sponsor of the JN Class Members enrolled in the JN class include (from left) Dan Sheen, Danny Friend, Lee Whitehead, Larry Knowles, Joel Lieberman and David Allocco. Lee and David are instructors. Power Squadron. As long as I ve been a member we have been using Sportsman s Warehouse for running many of our classes. When recently talking to Jenni, the store manager, I got to know that there are no strings attached. This relationship is not because someone s brother is affiliated with the store or anything like that. They simply support us because it s for a good cause. So in wanting to show our appreciation somehow, I came up with a win-win idea. We have proposed and aligned with Sportsman s Warehouse to run a Cooperative event in the store parking lot. It is tentatively scheduled for Saturday morning, June 23 rd. The actual theme is being worked out but it will be around summer water sports. The Power Squadron will be conducting vessel safety inspections and soliciting club offerings. There will be activities like fly casting and vendors such as new boat dealers. What s really great is that Sportsman s Warehouse is willing to invest some of their advertising budget to make this a success. The squadron executive committee is very excited about this opportunity and we want to encourage a strong turnout from our members. So please plan to come down, bring your boat or just shop and help us show our appreciation.
6 Bos n s Pipe 6 April 2012 Who will give me ten, now 15? Over the years Squadron members have made donations to the Squadron for a yard sale. Well, the yard sale has not happened and Bill and Connie Johnson s shop continued to accept donations from Squadron members. Recently Bill and Connie said now is time for Spring cleaning. So the yard sale concept has morphed into an auction concept. We plan to auction smaller items at the April meeting and allow open bids for larger items. The auction is planned for the April General Membership meeting at Joe s Crab Shack in Tempe. Remember, this Joe s is just off I-10 at Baseline Road. So this notice is to advise you to bring your checkbook to the meeting. We have lots of good things to auction. Need be present to bid. No phone bids accepted. You can t bid if you don t show. Several of the items up for bid are shown here. See you at Joe s Crab Shack on April 19. Commanders past and present Hosts at the recent barbecue were (from left) Joel Lieberman, Chuck and Jane Peterson, Chris Lockyer-Bratton, Lee Whitehead, Rob Anderson, Ron Werner, Bill Johnson, David Allocco, Connie Johnson,, John Lusson, John Yount, Les Ormsby and Gene Peterson. The event was at Bartlett Marina on Lake Bartlett. The dogs were guests. 2 Quarts Vermont Maple Syrup Adapter for shore power cord Volvo Penta Stern Drive Manual 2 Type 4 PFD s Telescoping Boat Hook
7 Bos n s Pipe 7 April 2012 Paper or Online? Over the past few years, many members have opted to receive the publication by computer instead of snail mail. Increasing the number of online-only readers has a significant influence on the squadron s budget. Postage accounts for 45 per copy. The March edition was typical, so it cost about 76 per copy. The number of mailed copies has been reduced by more than 60 households last year, saving postage and printing of about $46 a month. Most, including the current editor of the publication, believe the Bos n s Pipe is an easily justifiable expense. There are members, however, who would rather have the Pipe delivered each month exclusively online. Online distribution saves the squadron money, and the publication is available for use two or three days before it is delivered by mail. And, of course, the online edition is in full color usually with one or two extra pages that the printed version does not contain. The form below must be used to end receipt of the Bos n s Pipe by mail, if you wish. If you want to continue receiving the monthly newsletter each month by mail, do nothing. If at some later time you wish to reconsider and resume receiving a paper copy, just let us know, and we ll restore your address to the mailing list.
