Central Ave. There will be a reduced menu with your choice of Lasagna, Chicken Masala, or Sicilian Meatballs. Entrees are approximately $12 before gratuity and come with a salad, bread, coffee, tea, or milk, and a scoop of spumoni ice cream for dessert. Socializing begins at 5:30, dinner at 6:30, and meeting at 7:30. Hope to see you there. The annual meeting is the informal meeting in which the squadron s business is set for the year as well as the election of the squadron bridge. Any changes to the constitution and bylaws are voted on, and other formal votes are taken. It sounds complicated and boring, but it is not. The squadron executive committee, the rules committee, the nominations committee, the audit committee and the planning committee have already done all the heavy lifting. After a brief explanation the items are brought before the members in quorum for a vote. That s it. The change of watch, however, is a different affair. It is all social with the exception of the installation of the squadron s officers for the coming year. The location has been moved to Palmbrook Country Club, 9350 West Greenway Road in Sun City. Thanks to Jim Hill for finding such a nice place. The cost will be $26.00 per person. Good food and drink is promised, according to planner John Lusson It is set for 4 February, and all the details will be mailed to members, probably by the end of the month. Merit Marks earned by 51 Phoenix Sail and Power Squadron members have once again distinguished themselves by earning a Merit Mark for the year just ended. A member can earn only one mark each year for work done to contribute to the successful operation of the squadron. Congratulations to all. Diane Ashton Wilma L. As a result, we have looked back over the past year of reports, and selected several excerpts which are as apt today as when they were originally submitted. Commander Chris has selflessly served the squadron for two years after having been a member for only a short while. March, 2011 For the new watch year, I announced that 2011 will be the Year of Enablement. Enablement is more than just education; it is a commitment to being better at everything we do; it is everything that is done to give us the tools and resources to achieve ever higher goals. It is taking knowledge and turning it into skills; taking the theoretical and making it practical. It is taking our existing classes and enhancing them with actual on-the-water experience to build real skills. With the educational programs we are offering this year, we can become better boaters, but it is more than that; enablement is also about making the squadron stronger and more vibrant; it is also about developing the skills that we will need to run this organization, and the willingness and desire to give back by taking on some of the numerous jobs to make our squadron stronger. You don t have to sit in class to become Enabled ; you don t have to teach classes to become an Enabler. We can all reach out to our fellow members and help them become Enabled. We should have a Mentor for every new member, to lead them through what it takes to get the best out of their squadron membership; to get to know each other and search out the skills and abilities that make us all stronger. (continued on page four)

There s a year s worth of Pipes there in case you missed something earlier. Remember, there are two additional pages of photos in full color in the online edition of the publi- Check the squadron s web site for the latest schedule of public boating classes. They are conveniently located on both the east and west sides of the metropolitan area. And volunteer to proctor. You ll sharpen your boating skills with some very nice Educational Officer s Report By Lt/C Joe Warren, JN The Holiday season is in full swing as I write this, and I wish everyone in our Phoenix Sail and Power Squadron family best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous Holiday Season and New Year. It has been a busy year and our Annual meeting and Change of Watch are almost here. The Instructor Development class is scheduled to begin January 10th at Courtesy Chevrolet. Class will begin at 6:30pm and run till 8:30pm. The class is free to members. Lee Whitehead will be the instructor. Currently three members are planning to attend and there is room for one or two more. The class will be four or five Tuesdays depending on the number of students and their needs. Courtesy Chevrolet is centrally located at 13 th Street and Camelback Road. Enhancing your communication skills is how I would describe the class. If you would like to teach a Power Squadrons course or if communication skills are important in your life, make the effort to take this course. We are planning the JN class. I hope to be able to announce final arrangements by the Annual meeting. It looks like the class will begin in late February or early March and it will run about weeks. Students have completed the take home cruise final exam for the Advanced Piloting class. Thanks to Ron Werner for doing a great job as instructor, and to Chuck Peterson who helped proctor the class. Thanks to the students for staying with the class. I attended the District 28 Winter Council in San Diego on December 3 rd. It was a good meeting as usual and Phoenix was very well represented. Planning for next year and other business was discussed/conducted. A program highlight was a fascinating presentation about aquatic invasive species and the status of antifouling materials and techniques. Detailed information about invasive aquatic species may be found at: This is a University of California Cooperative Extension website focusing on Coastal Resources. There is other useful information for boaters at the site also. Check it out. I returned the Bullex Fire Suppression Simulator to Ken Voight on December 4 th. Ken is its caretaker, based in Newport, California. I want to thank the Education Department Committee members for all their work throughout the past year on behalf of the Squadron. They include Chuck Peterson, Ron Werner, Rob Anderson and David Allocco. They have taught classes, seminars and proctored classes and managed BOC on the water skill demonstrations. I want to thank to Lee Whitehead for teaching the Instructor Development class. Enjoy the Holiday Season and be safe on the water. With Thanks from the Editor The photos in this issue were voluntarily taken and supplied by a talented group of digital photographers including Joe Warren.

4 Bos n s Pipe 4 January 2012 Happy Birthday The following members are celebrating birthdays this month. David Allocco, Art Ashton, Alexander Bellesia, Margaret Chrisman, Ron Fortin, Connie Johnson, Katie Law, Susan Magaw, Michael Pavsek, Paul Schoonover, Joel Schraan, Kimberly Sheen, Tutsie Silapalikitporn, Alan Smith, John Yount. Many Happy Returns (continued from page two) Commander s Report May 2011 This is the time of year for the squadrons to establish its Star Award goals for the year. These goals represent challenges that are put to the squadron throughout the watch year, with the attainment of those goals counting towards the next year s Star Award. The first challenge is to have five members attain the grade of AP during the year. We are already off to a good start with the Piloting class with Chuck Peterson. The coursework is finished and the exams are being done now! Please wish all our students good plotting and success with this first step to AP! Secondly, I challenge the squadron to have five people sign up and get underway with the Boat Operator s Certification (BOC) this year. Again, we have already made a start with Ron Werner and myself being put through our paces during a raft-up and campout at Lake Pleasant. My sincere thanks to Ron Werner for letting us use (abuse?) his boat, and to David Allocco for putting in the countless hours to get this program underway! Thirdly, I mentioned the concept of Mentors for our new members. I would like five (5) people to step up to the plate and take new members under their wings. It is so important that we encourage (continued on the next page) Safety Notes By P/C Roger Clark, AP Editor s note: The following was submitted from the Small Craft Advisory from the Nov- Dec 2011 issue. It deals with accidents in the State of Georgia from 2005 through In many of the reported drowning incidents, the Ga. Department of Natural Resources utilized a highly technical device to aid in the recovery process (for victims) called the Klein 3900 Side Scan Sonar. The side scan sonar consists of a towable fish, processing unit and a laptop computer. The sides of the towable fish are lined with rows of ceramic discs that vibrate when influenced by an electrical current. The vibration sends a sound pressure wave through the water that continues on its path until influenced by a solid object. Once the pressure wave comes in contact with a solid object, the wave is reflected and sent back to the towable fish. The incoming signal is then relayed to the processing unit via a cable. Upon receiving the signal, the processing unit sends the data to a laptop computer for data analysis. With the laptop computer, the operator is able to view the images in real time. The side scan sonar is not an ideal search and recovery tool in all cases. At times conditions are not favorable for search with a towable device. Vegetation plays a huge impact on how well the device works in several searches where the victim was unable to be located using the sonar, the vegetation was so thick that the sonar could only be towed 10 feet before having to be pulled up to removed massive quantities of thick hydrilla. Also, since the device is towed under a vessel (continued on next page)

5 Bos n s Pipe 5 January 2012 (continue from previous page) any other submerged items, such as timber and rocks can affect whether the unit can be used. There have been several instances where the tow fish has struck or gotten tangled around rocks or flooded timber while performing a search....while no one tool can be 100 percent effective for all underwater search and recovery operations, the Klein 3900 side scan sonar has proved to be an effective asset that will be providing assistance to searchers in the future to help bring closure to those families that are missing loved ones. Commander s Report (continued from the previous page) our newest members to participate in squadron events and have someone they can rely on for help and advice. Please help both the new members and the entire squadron by becoming one of these Mentors. Just send me an to let me know you ve taken on the challenge and the new member you ve agreed to Mentor. June 2011 The Nominating Committee is already looking for able and willing volunteers to fill the various jobs that it takes to run the squadron next year. There is tremendous satisfaction to be had, knowing that you re a part of something that is successful. There is joy to be had in seeing the smiles of the people who have just enjoyed an event that you have helped create. Please consider how you can give a little to help make our squadron bigger, better and more valuable. Give Bill Johnson or David Allocco a call to find out how you can help, and think about coming along to one of our Executive Committee Meetings to see how the squadron business is conducted and chat to your Bridge and Executive Committee Members. There s an opportunity out there just waiting for you to find it! September This is a time for me to freely admit that the safety training I have received as being a part of the PSPS has paid off! At the soak-and-sweat, I narrowly averted a disaster, leaving me with profound thanks to the educational programs we offer, and to the staff of instructors who do such a great job of making sure that the students gain real skills from them. It isn t often that we get to put emergency drills into practice, so I have had many opportunities during this summer break to ponder on what the consequences would have been if I had not had the training I received during the various classes I had attended. Would I have been able to figure out what was happening? Would I have had the forethought to have had a spare drain plug with me? (There.. I admit it!! I left the drain plug out!!) Would I have known how to summon help and prepare my crew?? If it had not been for the training I had received, the outcome would have not been as favorable as it was. My family could have died. Think about it. I did. Administrative Officer s Report By Lt/C Dan Sheen, P Upcoming events include the Squadron's annual meeting on January 19th and Snow cruise at Lake Pleasant on January 21st. The Change of Watch quickly follows on February 4th and I have heard good things about the Palm Brook country club venue (for the annual meeting) and hope to see you there. The year has passed quickly and Kim and I have enjoyed more of the Power Squadron activities than in past years. Prior to becoming AO, I had focused on the on-the-water activities and usually ignored the meetings and social events. Now we know what we've been missing and look forward to meeting our friends at the land-based social events nearly as much as getting on the water. We hope all of you have a great holiday season and look forward to seeing everyone on the water or in the buffet line this coming year.

It was to be the last party at Willie s Chandler home, and the weather was perfect for gathering on the patio overlooking the golf course. Above, a card of appreciation was presented to Willie and below the ladies of the day gathered with Santa for a commemorative photo. Joe Warren was kind enough to provide the photos to the Bos n s Pipe.

7 Bos n s Pipe 7 January 2012 Paper or Online? Over the past few years, many members have opted to receive the publication by computer instead of snail mail. Increasing the number of online-only readers has a significant influence on the squadron s budget. Postage accounts for 44 per copy. The December edition was typical, so it cost about 76 per copy. The number of mailed copies has been reduced by more than 50 households last year, saving postage and printing of about $38 a month. Most, including the current editor of the publication, believe the Bos n s Pipe is an easily justifiable expense. There are members, however, who would rather have the Pipe delivered each month exclusively online. Online distribution saves the squadron money, and the publication is available for use two or three days before it is delivered by mail. And, of course, the online edition is in full color usually with usually with one or two extra pages that the printed version does not contain. The form below must be used to end receipt of the Bos n s Pipe by mail, if you wish. If you want to continue receiving the monthly newsletter each month by mail, do nothing. If at some later time you wish to reconsider and resume receiving a paper copy, just let us know, and we ll restore your address to the mailing list.
