Rather, its emphasis is on enhancing instructor skills. The course has been designed to demonstrate interactive teaching methods focused on adult learning. If you are interested in teaching CPS courses, or are currently an instructor wanting to upgrade your teaching abilities, the ID Course is for you. Check it out! And it s FREE: the Squadron will cover the cost of all course materials. To register, contact Douglass Legg or douglasslegg@yahoo.ca Lubber Line Distribution Method and Editorial Deadline We distribute the Lubber Line by to all members who have an address. To read it you will need Adobe Acrobat reader available on a free download (go to the Squadron website click on the Lubber Line and there is a link to the reader) Articles for publication must be in the hands of the editor by the 15th of each month.
3 PAGE 3 Commander s Report As I write this first report for the fall of 2015 it is sunny and about 25 C, so it certainly does not feel as though the autumn is almost upon us. What a summer it has been, with no rain and seemingly incessant sun and wind! I hope that you have all managed to get in some enjoyable boating throughout it all and did not get too sunburnt. My summer has included some boating, but not of the BC cruising type. I had a trip to Europe for a family reunion (with about 30 members from three generations coming from Canada, Australia and England). The reunion was during a week s cruise in the Greek Islands; not my usual type of boating! I also visited Paris, Venice, Cyprus and Rome. In Venice the boating included a gondola ride, many trips on a vaporetto (water bus) and a ride in a very fast and gorgeously varnished water taxi. It was a fabulous trip, but now I am back home to reality. Since the June squadron meeting, things have been quite quiet as far as NPS business in concerned. I gather that the Half Way to Christmas Cruise was a great success, despite strong winds on the Friday that deterred some people from attending. I believe there were boats there from three squadrons. On July 1 your squadron once again had a successful booth at the Canada Day celebrations in Maffeo Sutton Park. It was an excellent opportunity to make the public aware of what we do. Many thanks to all the members who came out to help you know who you are. Again it was extremely hot, and I think I had heat exhaustion by the time I got home at the end of the day. Now I am planning to attend the Vancouver Island North District (VIND) Annual Rendezvous on the weekend of August at Rathtrevor Beach. You can come for the weekend, or just for the Saturday. It is a great way to get to know members from other squadrons and have some fun. Why not consider joining us? For details visit Now we are gearing up for the fall classes. For the first time since I came to Nanaimo we are not offering a Boating (now Boating Essentials) class in the fall. Based on the low enrollment in the past few years we have decided just of offer one class in the spring. However, we are offering several other courses. Seamanship, which takes you knowledge quite a bit further than the Boating Essentials course, will start on September 14. I urge anyone who does significant coastal cruising to consider taking this course. We are also offering Weather for Pleasure Boaters, and Electronic Navigation. The latter is only four weeks, and will be followed by Radar, also four weeks. If there is enough interest, we will also run Junior Navigator; the introduction to celestial navigation. Of course, Alexa will continue to offer the Maritime Radio course on a regular basis. Please consider taking a course yourself, and spread the word around your boating friends. Full details of our courses are given elsewhere in this Lubber Line, as well as on Unfortunately, due to pressures of work, our Social Officer, Lynda Gamble, has had to resign. She has done a great job as Social Officer and we owe her a large vote of thanks. So now we are looking for someone to step into the breach! The job essentially involves making the tea and coffee for meetings, and getting a few cookies. If anyone can help us out, please let me know at smab@shaw.ca or I hope to see many of you out at our next meeting on Tuesday September 8. Sheila Boutcher

6 PAGE 6 Education Matters I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather and getting a lot of quality time out on the water. While the summer boating season is far from over (according to Environment Canada), consider what can be done to increase your boating enjoyment next season through education. Starting in September the Nanaimo Squadron will be offering a variety of courses for the novice and experienced boater alike. Fall course information is provided throughout this newsletter and on boatingcources.ca. As always, if you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me -- douglasslegg@yahoo.ca or Know someone who is interested in expanding their boating knowledge? If so please pass this information along. All of our courses are open to CPS and NYC members and not-yet members. Safe boating... and I hope to see you in class.
